A readily identifiable biomarker for ß2-agonist use is desperately needed to maintain competition integrity and ensure welfare of performance horses. Our overarching hypothesis is that chronic ß2-agonist administration induces an energetic switch in skeletal muscle, resulting in impaired mitochondrial function and elevated oxidative stress which, in turn, up-regulates a single or group of metabolites that is unique to chronic ß2-agonist administration. This timely and industry-applicable hypothesis will be tested in the following 2 objectives:
Objective 1: Identify a single or group of metabolites that are differentially expressed following chronic ß2-agonist administration.
Sub-Objective 1: Determine timing of differential expression of metabolites identified in Objective 1 after the onset of drug administration.
Objective 2: Definitively characterize the impacts of chronic ß2-agonist administration on cardiac and skeletal muscle health and responses to acute exercise stress in Quarter Horses.
