This summer project supports a research exchange between Engineering Science programs at Osaka University and the University of Toronto by creating a shared foundation for future biomedical engineering collaboration. At a high level, the project focuses on how modern engineering can better connect advanced measurement technologies with real medical needs—turning complex biomedical signals into knowledge that is easier to interpret, compare, and build on. The host institution benefits by engaging a student trained in the rigorous, systems-level approach of UofT Engineering Science, bringing experience in structured problem solving, quantitative reasoning, and interdisciplinary biomedical engineering. The home institution benefits by gaining exposure to Osaka University’s strengths in medical physics and photonics-based approaches to health research, as well as the research culture and methods used in a leading international engineering environment. Overall, the exchange strengthens long-term collaboration by combining complementary expertise—Osaka’s depth in photonics/medical physics and UofT’s strength in biomedical systems engineering and engineering design—helping both institutions develop highly qualified researchers who can work across disciplines and across countries.
