Accurate and high-resolution analysis of precipitation accumulation is of primary importance for hydrological and meteorology applications. In the last decade, the Canadian Precipitation Analysis (CaPA) system has been developed and implemented at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)’s Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC). The goal of this project aims to improve CaPA by including adjusted solid precipitation, radar and satellite information to the system. This will be conducted using ECCC stations equipped with an all-weather precipitation system, the radar network to infer the snowfall rate from the reflectivity field as well as the Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG). An optimal assimilation scheme of these three data sources will be identified at the end of the project, with the potential for an improved operational CaPA product that will benefit water management users.
