Innovative Patient Monitoring System: Integrating Affordable Load Sensors and Multi-Modal AI for Enhanced Care and Safety

Recent statistics in Canada highlight a growing aging population, with 18.8% aged 65 and older, projected to increase by 6.2% by 2036. Falls and pressure injuries (PI) are major concerns for seniors and hospitalized patients, contributing significantly to hospitalizations. About 20-30% of seniors experience falls annually, leading to 85% of senior injury-related hospitalizations. While various fall detection methods exist, minimizing false alarms while maintaining high detection rates remains a challenge. Additionally, 26% of patients across healthcare settings suffer from PIs, with inadequate adherence to prevention strategies like patient repositioning every two hours. This study aims to introduce a novel smart technology to address these issues by detecting inbed body positioning for timely caregiver prompts and preventing patient falls from bed. Using data from the Toch Sleepsense device and Artificial Intelligence, it offers a contactless, user-friendly, and cost-effective alternative to existing solutions.
