Natural Soil Binders for Enhancing Quicklime-Induced Solidification/Stabilization (S/S) of Hydrocarbons in Contaminated Soils

Solidification/Stabilization (S/S) technology is a cost-effective, viable option for immobilizing inorganics (metals), but its applicability to soils hydrocarbon-contaminated soils (organic) has been limited. Dr. Chang’s Lab at the University of Saskatchewan has observed the significant potential for immobilizing and stabilizing hydrocarbons in soils through quicklime-induced S/S reactions with natural clay minerals. This Mitacs Research in collaboration
with Graymont, a world-class lime producer, will further explore quicklime-induced S/S for hydrocarboncontaminated soils by leveraging natural soil components (<425 µm), including the natural products of physical, chemical and biological weathering in the field. Natural soil binders may contain hydrophilic and hydrophobic constituents that can link hydrocarbons to the stabilized quicklime-soil matrix. Hydrocarbons are the most identified contaminants in site soils in Canada. This research will expand quicklime applications for mitigating the environmental footprint of excess carbon in soil environments.
