The generation and supply of energy is the largest anthropogenic source of CO2 and thus contributes significantly to climate change and the associated global consequences. As a result, a reduction of CO2 emissions in energy generation and distribution is an unavoidable key issue that must be addressed. In this research project, the main focus is on deriving methods to reduce the CO2 emissions of energy generation, distribution and consumption. Our research directly addresses this issue by developing validated models of sector-coupled energy systems, ranging from household level to cities, and to optimize their energy systems using intelligent algorithms, including AI-based methods.
The research of the PhD students showed, that tremendous savings in emitted CO2 can be expected by optimally controlling the energy system. This knowledge is fueled by the opportunities offered at the University of Waterloo as one of the most prestigious universities in the field of energy research worldwide.
