Socio-Economlc Mine Closure (SEMC)Guideline: An Evaluation of the Local EconomicDevelopment (LED) Initiatives Implemented byMining Companies to Address the AdverseResults of Mine Closure.

This Mitacs-accelerate proposal is the second of a three stage project to be developed as part of
Andre Xavier’s PhD investigation. The complete research seeks to analyze the initiatives implemented
by mining companies that are aimed at addressing the socio-economic impacts imposed on local
communities when a mine ceases its operations. Additionally, a socio-economlc mine closure
guideline will be developed to assist mining communities and companies in anticipating and mitigating
the impacts that the closure of a mine has on communities. All of the ground work for the field
research was conducted during the first Mitacs proposal, and during this second phase of the
proposal, the actual field work will take place in the Northwestern Territories where Diavik Diamond
Mine holds its operations. The field work entails the distribution of surveys to community members
and to the company’s representatives. Additionally, in-depth interviews will also be conducted with key
