Estimates predict that globally well over 20% of crop yield is lost to pests and pathogens and this is forecast to increase with climate change. Thus, strategies to enhance plant resistance against disease and insect pests have been identified as one of the major challenges of this decade. Plants have chemical defenses involved in resistance to these biotic stresses. By optimizing levels of these compounds in plants or using these compounds as pesticides, we can enhance crop yield by protecting crops against pests or pathogens. Saponins are a large and diverse family of plant metabolites that contribute to plant defense against insect pests and pathogens. In this research, we are investigating the specific role of oleanolic-derived saponins in plant resistance caterpillar herbivory and to the causative agent of white mould (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum). Thus, this project will deepen our understanding of the role of oleanolic-derived saponins in plant defense to lead to strategies to enhance crop protection either by increasing endogenous resistance or by their use as biopesticides.
