Reptiles are one of the most threatened groups of species in the world and are very vulnerable to threats like human development and climate change. The eastern massasauga rattlesnake is the only remaining venomous snake in Ontario and their numbers and habitat are declining. Given that the populations are isolated and found in different habitats there may not be any swapping of genetic information between them, and each population may have unique adaptations that could help them overcome threats. This project brings together experts in conservation actions with leading researchers in reptile biology to determine if there is population connectivity and whether they have adapted differently. We will also develop a method for determining the health and size of populations using roadkill samples and any shed skins we find in an effort to reduce our interaction with this shy species.
