Evaluating Women’s Shelters Canada Second Stage Transitional Housing New Build Project

Women’s Shelters Canada (WSC; https://endvaw.ca/) is a network of 14 provincial and territorial shelter associations representing over 450 shelters across Canada. A new service offered by WSC is the Second Stage Transitional Housing (SSTH) New Build Project (https://endvaw.ca/second-stage-project-2-2/). SSTH offers technical assistance, resources and support in three areas for member organizations looking to develop second stage transitional housing: (1) grant applications for pre-development activities; (2) grant applications for capital costs; and (3) project management services. WSC has partnered with researchers from the Centre for Research on Educational and Community Services (CRECS) at the University of Ottawa, to undertake an evaluation of this program. The evaluation will describe how the program was designed and intended to function), how it is has actually operated, why various members have used these services or not, what are the perceptions of the providers of services, what are the lessons that have been learned to date, and what are the recommendations for improving the program.

Assessing temporal changes in grizzly bear reproductive characteristics under fluctuating Pacific salmon returns

The proposed research will use camera trap footage collected since 2009 to answer questions relating to grizzly bear conservation and status within British Columbia. Observed numbers of female bears with cubs will be analyzed in relation to Pacific salmon returns to a specific river on the coast of BC, to determine if there is a relationship between grizzly cubs in an area and the amount of salmon available across years. By using a large data set of images, this project aims to provide a big picture image of trends relating to food and wildlife birth relationships. The intern will work in collaboration with and supported by Knight Inlet Lodge, a grizzly bear viewing lodge, providing continued monitoring of the local grizzly population, identification of individual bears and relevant information that will be shared with wildlife guides and guests for the continued success of the business. Finally, the intern will share findings from the research with KIL in efforts to maintain conservation efforts and mitigation strategies in the area.

The Mental Health and Work Participation of Home Care Rehabilitation Professionals Transitioning Out of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly affected the physical and mental health wellbeing of health care workers. However, research on occupational stress and burnout in rehabilitation professionals (RPs) is severely lacking especially the effects of COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to examine the nature and impacts of burnout and occupational stress among RPs working at VHA Home healthcare transitioning out of the pandemic via self-reported questionnaires and qualitative interviews. To effectively manage the mental health needs of these workers and support occupational engagement, organizations must develop policies, programs, services and practices designed specifically for public health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of this study practical strategies that support the mental health of RPs at VHA. This project will provide evidence for the organization to foster a safe, cohesive and inclusive work environment in turn translating into better healthcare services for VHA patients.

How Mechanical Conflicts Contribute to Organ Growth.

The developmental programming of an organism ensures reproducibility of organ shape and size with accurate robustness. But, how an organ knows when to grow and when to stop is a key question that remains inadequately addressed. Both genetics and mechanics play a role in the maintenance of organ reproducibility and robustness, especially in plants. Mechanical feedback of cells and tissues is necessary for proper organ morphogenesis, but the connection between mechanical status and genetics is not well understood. As plant cells are immobile and linked by cellulose matrix, they need to modulate growth and resolve mechanical conflicts arising due to differential growth. The study proposes to investigate how genes that regulate leaf shape (namely CIN-TCPs) also contribute to growth patterning and mechanical properties of cells. The data generated by live-imaging of organs will be helpful in understanding consequences of genetic regulation of growth on mechanical conflicts to produce robust organ shape in wildtype leaf and cotyledon.
Our work will address a fundamental question in developmental biology. We will work on molecular regulators of growth and their dialogue with the biophysical realm that maintains organ robustness. The work will give us a comprehensive idea of parameters that modulate variability in organ size

Design and optimization of an autonomous solar water pumping system with battery bank storage system

It is aimed to design and optimize a system which uses solar energy for electrification as well as providing the required electricity for pumping water. A Photovoltaic-battery autonomous standalone system will be considered. Furthermore, in some areas the radiation is lessened due to bad weather conditions. Therefore, it is common to use batteries to provide energy when the system has no solar energy, or the solar radiation is not sufficient. Sizing of the system should be selected while considering loss of power in different periods of time. The change in load of the system should be investigated to predict the probable change of consumption patterns. Finally, environmental-economic investigation should be evaluated.

Freeman Jiang – Leveraging Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Generative AI To Support and Augment Education Initiatives

The intern will be participating in an interdisciplinary project to investigate how recent advances in machine learning, generative AI, and natural language processing (NLP) could be leveraged to improve education outcomes, both within the partner organization’s operations and in the broader Canadian education system. Through partnership with the partner organization (Cansbridge Fellowship) and the academic supervisor (Dr. Boutaba), the intern will conduct research to produce a report and recommendation identifying the areas of education that could be most affected by AI, and how educators can leverage these technologies effectively and responsibly. They will also create a business plan for the organization that will allow them to capitalize on recent AI developments to better achieve their mission of developing global innovation leaders in Canada. The plan will focus on leveraging AI to streamline Cansbridge’s new fellow onboarding process to cut down costs and improve efficiency. This will come with direct economic benefits to the partner organization. The partner organization’s alumni network includes leaders in AI from prominent innovative organizations like Google, Facebook, and numerous startups, who will offer mentorship directly.
