Perceptions on opioid prescribing after total joint arthroplasty among surgeons practising in Canada, Japan, and the Netherlands: an interpretive description study

Total hip and knee replacement surgeries are the second and third most common surgical procedures in Canada, respectively. Opioid analgesics are routinely prescribed to manage pain after these procedures, making orthopaedic surgeons the third-highest opioid prescribers in Canada. However, opioids are not typically more effective than alternatives (e.g., NSAIDs) and are associated with addiction, overdose, and death. Compared with Canada, Japan’s opioid use is sparse. Likewise, opioid misuse and opioid-related death are substantially lower in the Netherlands than in Canada, but greater than in Japan. Accordingly, these three countries represent high (Canada), moderate (Netherlands), and low (Japan) “cases” of opioid prescribing. Using a qualitative research methodology, interpretive description, and semi-structured interviews, this study compares the perceptions of orthopaedic surgeons on postoperative opioid prescribing, and explores facilitators and barriers. The insights obtained from this study may help to identify potential drivers of practise variations, which can be used to inform system-wide initiatives supporting safer opioid prescribing practises.

Designing a user-friendly platform for a water conservation device using behavioural science

Canada is one of the largest per capita users of fresh water in the world. A blind spot in water consumption is that people are often unaware of how much water is being used. One solution is to provide instant feedback on water consumption to users and use behavioural interventions to promote water conservation among users. In this project, we will conduct a literature review on behavioural interventions that promote water conservation. Based on the literature, we will design and test prototypes of an interactive dashboard (target application: mobile) and display device (hardware accessory) to identify the optimal design for a water conservation device. This project will ultimately help Canadian and international consumers to conserve water.

Designing and Prototyping an Isolated Three-Stage GaN-Based Bidirectional 6.6 kW On-Board Charger (OBC)

Galium Nitride (GaN) technology compared to the conventional silicon and silicon carbide technologies gives better switching performance in terms of switching losses and switching speed. Also, since GaN Fets do not have intrinsic body diode as in Si and SiC based switching MOSFETS, they can work at much higher frequencies in room temperature, leading to using more compact passive components for power electronics devices. Production of bidirectional onboard chargers (OBC) are boosted due to the increasing demand for electric vehicles. GaN Systems Inc. provides high-efficient GaN Fets which can facilitate reaching more efficient and compact OBCs. The production of a 6.6 kW bidirectional OBC with above 96% peak efficiency is projected using GaN products of GaN systems Inc. The final design will facilitate the usage of GaN technologies in automotive industry, increase the system efficiency, and encourage the more exploitations of GaN Systems products.

MechMonkey Business Marketing Internship

MechMonkey is an innovative technology platform dedicated to facilitating Auto repair shops’ appointment management system. With MechMonkey, Auto repair shops can manage their appointments and interactions with their customers. Additionally, a mobile app allows their customers to schedule services, save invoices, and have reminders set for their vehicle maintenance. MechMonkey is a one-stop solution for both garages and their customers. This project will help in speeding up the process of launching our application. Additionally, this version of application needs to have additional features and integrations than our old one. By conducting market analysis, this project can assist the business in determining what features and integrations will provide us with a competitive advantage. Additionally, MechMonkey needs to speak with the auto repair shops to learn more about the difficulties they are currently facing with scheduling appointments and interacting with their customers.

Financial policy implications of large deposits for Indigenous Credit Unions

The project seeks to understand how the financial regulation of large scale cash transactions negatively impacts Indigenous communities. As well as, the time and cost associated with the regulatory burden of tracking large scale transactions for small, Indigenous credit unions. The partner organization, Me-Dian Credit Union, will benefit from cost savings and regulatory changes by allowing them to become more competitive with payday lenders.

Is this natural language?

The partner provides software that uses natural language processing techniques to store and analyze documents of different firms. This includes their widely used smart document storage software. The techniques suffer performance when they use text that is not written in well-formed “natural language”, such as tables and labels. The intern will be designing and implementing a model to classify given text as being well-formed or not. The model will then be included in existing software to detect if given text is well-formed or not and the text that is not well-formed will not be considered. This should improve the performance of existing software and future software that analyze text.

Parcours Hubble- Voir loin.

Industrial Health and Safety Data Management and Training Mobile Platform

Accidents can be predicted and avoided with the use of health and safety data management software. (Guzman 2013) While a variety of IT health and safety management solutions have been developed for Fortune 500 companies, few of these solutions meet the needs of small and medium-sized businesses. One that does is Business2Mobile’s (B2M) Web API Data Management platform, which can help small and medium size companies to keep track of health and safety data. This research will help to measure market size and competitors, and will identify gaps within the marketplace. The project scope is to analyze market scenarios and trends, give recommendations and develop a market penetration strategy. Intern will use different research methodologies, including internet research, interviews, surveys, and case studies, to collect information that will assist B2M in improving their products and services. Further, they will benefit from the strategic plan intern develops, which will have recommendations for the expansion of their products and services.
