QT-Prolonging Medications and Major Adverse Cardiac Events

Some medications affect the QT interval of the heartbeat and can result in major heart events, which can lead to death. It is unclear exactly how much medications compared to other risk factors contribute to these outcomes and when they will occur. This research project will use data from St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton’s (SJHH) Dovetale-Epic electronic medical record (EMR). Patients who were or were not taking medications that affect the heartbeat and experienced serious heart events will be identified. The data will be validated, which will develop a process for validating EMR data and better explain how EMR data fields are linked. This will help SJHH’s Digital Solutions team and researchers better use EMR data for future projects. After data validation, machine learning will be used to predict the importance of medications and risk factors for these serious heart events, which can improve medication alerts for clinicians and patient outcomes.

Marketing and Digital Content Intern

After nearly two years in business, further implementation of Mended Pathways Wellness’ (MPW) marketing plan which includes growing the digital presence for MPW is vital to help generate more awareness and interest in valuable supports and services offered while also building on the business reputation. A Marketing and Digital Media intern will help to strategically enhance and create content for the MPW website and social media platforms via interviews, videos, live streams, workshop and group therapy promotions, as well as further roll out the overall marketing plan, positioning niche offerings. MPW’s audience will also benefit from greater access to free content and resources with support from an intern. The student will benefit from working with an experienced business owner and marketing professional, receiving ongoing mentorship. Another goal is to establish more connections in the community and build relationships with holistic clinics to grow MPW’s reputation, driving more referrals and growing the demand for group therapy and both online and in person seminars. The work of the Marketing and Digital Media intern is anticipated to free the founder of MPW up a little to make vital connections.

Tuskhub is a growth consultancy that specializes in helping purpose-driven start-ups and scale-ups in various industries. While we’ve had success through word-of-mouth recommendations, we’re now seeking to expand our client base and attract new business. However, we lack a proven process to accomplish this goal. Therefore, this project aims to create an innovative process that allows Tuskhub to identify and reach out to its ideal customers effectively. To achieve this, the project will involve thorough research into existing best practices and software solutions that can help us pinpoint and connect with our target market. Additionally, given that many of our clients are cash-strapped startups, we’ll explore opportunities for grants and other funding options that can help them cover our costs. The project may involve leveraging new and innovative apps or reimagining existing solutions in novel ways. By the project’s end, we will have developed a new process that we can test with a list of clients and initiate outreach efforts. The successful completion of this project is essential to the long-term sustainability of Tuskhub’s revenue growth.

SAT-Conservation de l’art numérique

Dans une perspective archivistique, l’objectif général du projet consiste à alimenter une étude de faisabilité relative à un centre de conservation et de documentation pour les arts numériques et la faisabilité d’un tel projet. La stagiaire mettra en place des outils de veille documentaire et effectuera une revue de la littérature relative à la conservation numérique en générale et des œuvres d’art numériques en particulier. Elle identifiera les structures existantes, documentera les stratégies existantes et les méthodes de documentation des œuvres ainsi que les différentes approches qui sont préconisées. Ces différentes activités lui permettront d’identifier et de répertorier les œuvres concernées par les enjeux de conservation. Les enjeux de préservation sont communs à l’ensemble des institutions conservant des œuvres d’art numérique et des industries créatives, la Société des arts technologiques [SAT] souhaite répondre à un défi sectoriel et jouer un rôle fédérateur pour le milieu. Ce projet renforce la mission première de la SAT, qui est le développement de la création numérique et des technologies immersives ainsi que le soutien à l’accessibilité des œuvres pour différentes communautés.

Summer Intern Analyst – Core Income Impact Vehicles – to support affordable housing in Canada

Of G7 nations, Canada has the greatest undersupply of affordable housing, and lowest rate of supply of core housing needs as defined by CMHC. Recently we (Ayrshire) have seen a shift in investment demand associated with new acquisition and developments of multifamily apartment housing in Western Canada. Given it’s strong performance and impact investing nature, Ayrhsire has undergone research to raise capital for an Impact investing fund focused on core needs housing to service Canadian’s through affordable housing, seniors housing, student housing, accessible needs housing, etc. Given subsidy programs and available puclic private partnerships opportunities emerging in Western Canadian urban centres, there are strong tailwinds and an opportunistic time to be investing in multifamily developents that have measurable social impacts. We are needing an intern to help gather economic and financial data to help identify markets where Ayrshire’s investment thesis is supported. This research will generally be focused on relative fundamentals important to real property markets. We have actively been looking for ways to effectively participate in impact investment and and need resources to deliver the quality of analysis that our executive team is expecting.

This project aims to use flocks of autonomous UAVs for inspection, map generation, and the production of real-time digital twins in dynamic (i.e., time-changing) environments, using commercial ports as a case study. This project will advance autonomous drone navigation in the presence of vehicles and people, the automated deployment of large fleets, and support and improve port logistics and security. This realization of this project involves a close relationship between academic and industrial sectors, combining business skills, advanced knowledge in perception and navigation, simulation and artificial intelligence.

Exploring Artists’ Professional Practices and Observations of Patient Experience of Hospital-based Arts Programming

The Artist on the Ward (AOW) Program in the University of Alberta Hospital is a unique service that offers arts experiences such as music, painting or literary art sessions to patients, staff, and family, facilitated by onsite staff artists. The AOW program has operated for 20 years, and has received plenty of positive feedback, but has not been consistently evaluated. This study will collect artist professional practices and reflections of their sessions with patients and the feedback they receive from patients. Artists will also collect photographic documentation of the artwork created by or with the patients. Study results and images will be shared as a public art display. The study will provide the Artists on the Wards program with insight on potential areas for improvement and as well as a better understanding of its impact on patients’ hospital experiences. This knowledge will result in stronger funding applications for the program and could contribute to the development of similar programs within hospitals across Canada.

La construction identitaire en contexte entrepreneurial : l’expérience de l’espace vécu au quotidien et son rôle dans la construction d’une identité entrepreneuriale

Le projet vise à mettre en lumière le processus de construction identitaire en contexte entrepreneurial, en portant un regard particulier sur l’expérience de l’espace vécue au quotidien. Le stagiaire réalisera une autoethnographie afin de documenter la construction d’une identité entrepreneuriale au sein de sa personne, à travers sa présence chez Montréal Cowork pendant une durée de 8 mois. L’organisme partenaire ouvrira ses portes au stagiaire tout en facilitant la mise en relations avec les autres membres, l’invitant à participer à des réunions stratégiques, ainsi qu’aux diverses activités de la communauté. L’organisation partenaire bénéficiera du travail de recherche afin de notamment mieux comprendre comment son espace de coworking impact ses membres d’un point de vue identitaire. Cela permettra de faire des ajustements au sein de son espace, au besoin, et de mieux outiller ses membres entrepreneurs d’un point de vue identitaire (accès à des ressources sur place, formations, etc.).

The research project titled “STRUGGLE TO SETTLE Adaptation of Malayalee Diaspora in Canada” tries to explore the adaptation issues faced by Malayalee immigrants in Canada. According to the recent census of Canada, the Malayalee diaspora is the fastest growing South Asian community in Canada. The project intended to address various issues faced by Malayalee immigrants such as cultural shocks, social stigma, racism, adaptation to climate, social and spatial isolation, lack of emotional and social support and financial struggles in their early days of immigration. The study also aims at capturing the coping strategies that are devised by the immigrants individually and with the support of ethnic community and organizations etc. The proposed research will add on to the knowledge on Malayalee diaspora in Canada as there is scant literature on the topic.

Analysis of a Functionally Graded Steel

The purpose of the proposed research is to investigate the variables that contribute to the fracture toughness of an FGM consisting of layers of carbide-free bainite (CFB) and high Manganese (Mn) Twinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel, with a gradient in Mn content. The objective of this project is to determine the optimal design of the FGM that results in a combination of high strength and high fracture toughness. This is to be achieved by varying the number of interfaces and the thickness of layers to analyze the material’s mechanical response. The sub-objectives of this project are to understand the fracture mechanics of the FGM during concentrated crack propagation and to quantify the strength of the interface. It is presumed that the material responds to stresses through a combination of delamination at the interface and absorption of energy through bending. This behaviour would vary based on the construction of the material and which layer the pre-notched crack is machined in. In working with Dr. Rafael Estevez the work will be focused on developing simulations of the data using finite element modeling. The combination of simulations with experimental work is intended to provide complimentary data, improving the understanding of the material.
