This research is to create a short experimental film which will facilitate intergenerational conversations between Black-Inuit youth and elders. As a creative expression and telling unknown stories, it aims to strengthen Inuit youth mental health, positive Black-Inuit identity and leadership based on learning what has come before. The outcome of this project, namely the film will become an intervention in larger academic areas such as critical race-feminism, Indigenous studies, to counter archival studies to aim for a re-reading of urban Inuit modern migration and endo-colonial settlement history and archive.

Concevoir une pêche du Grand Lac des Esclaves par les Nordistes pour un avenir résilient dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest

The 20-year research program that the Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is building to understand the sustainability of the Great Slave Lake requires articulating the perspectives and priorities of the Indigenous Nations that live around and depend on the lake. Under ARF’s research program umbrella, this BSI internship will be part of the Mitacs-funded project “Designing a Great Slave Lake Fishery by Northerners for Resilient Futures in the NWT”. The general objective of this project is to gather Indigenous and other northern residents’ perspectives on how they envision the future of the lake fisheries. The intern will support our project with logistics, networking, communications and contributing to understanding research capacity needs in the communities associated with the project. The intern will be in charge of contacting research participants and scheduling meetings and appointments. The intern will facilitate the logistics of those meetings. In terms of communications, the intern will generate a database of media content related to the general themes of the project and support the creation of short communications for Indigenous nations, other stakeholders involved in the project and the general public. The intern will also help consult people and organizations involved in the fishery about their needs regarding skills, resources and networks associated with conducting research.

CiviPress: Developing Deployment Infrastructure for a Secure CiviCRM / WordPress SaaS Offering

CiviCRM is an open source constituent relationship management system used by over 11,000 non-profit organizations around the world. Although about 170 host more than 250k records, about a quarter are used by small non-profits with between 2,500 and 10,000 contacts. These organizations maintain sensitive personal information including donation information, event attendance, volunteering data, and case records. As small and medium sized enterprises they are often targets of cybercriminals. This project will aim to develop a highly secure software as a service offering for non-profits including Transparent Date Encryption of data at rest, and automated deployment of new instances of CiviCRM/WordPress.

Étude des technologies potentielles pour le logement à émissions nettes zéro

Avec l’escalade du réchauffement climatique et ses effets néfastes sur l’environnement, il est urgent de réduire la combustion des combustibles fossiles pour diminuer les émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Les bâtiments sont l’un des grands consommateurs d’énergie et leur contribution aux émissions mondiales de gaz à effet de serre doit être réduite. Les maisons à énergie carboneutre produisent l’énergie qu’elles consomment. Tout aussi important à considérer est l’eau nette zéro, où la consommation d’eau est égale à la production d’eau. Pour un logement durable, il est très crucial d’atteindre une consommation neutre neutre tant en énergie qu’en eau. Les projets proposés visent à étudier les technologies potentielles pour le logement à émissions nettes zéro qui contribueraient à atteindre la consommation zéro en énergie et en eau. Un projet porte sur les technologies de stockage d’énergie thermique, qui sont très cruciales pour intégrer l’énergie solaire dans les applications de chauffage. Le deuxième projet porte sur l’exploration des systèmes d’eau hors réseau et de l’utilisation des énergies renouvelables dans ces systèmes.

The CO2 redox flow battery development: Bifunctional heterostructured and sub-stoichiometric Magnéli-phase electrocatalysts for negative and positive electrodes

The world’s stringent need to transition to a low-carbon industrial economy is more pressing than ever and requires an ambitious departure from traditional processes through innovation, development and implementation of different breakthrough technologies within a strict timeline. Agora is tackling two energy challenges simultaneously with its proprietary CO2 Redox Flow Battery (CRB) technology by enabling the transition from traditional emission-intensive power generation systems to low-carbon renewable sources through energy storage and addressing GHG-emission mitigation via converting CO2 during the battery operation to a by-product.
The proposed project will constitute the development and scale-up of integral parts of the CRB unit, i.e. the electrocatalysts for the positive and negative electrodes, to further improve the CRB performance and develop the next generation of metal-free redox flow batteries.

GOTT Energy Strategic Development Project

Rapid growth in the renewable energy sector has presented both unprecedented opportunity and increasing pressure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand. This project with Gott Energy will involve three stages. First, a comprehensive analysis of the company today will be completed using the Lean business philosophy.
This will establish a baseline, which will support the second phase; creation of a strategic development plan to direct the path forwards. This second phase will involve researching consumer interests, demographics and market trends to capitalize on new opportunities and improve their marketing strategy, and creating a roadmap for the coming year.
Lastly, this project involves the execution of said business development plan which requires ongoing validation and continual improvement of processes.
This project will allow Gott Energy to keep pace with high demand, continue to break fiscal records, and provide an even greater volume of alternative energy products and services to customer of all types, on-grid and off-grid, including rural and indigenous communities – significantly advancing the adoption of renewable technology in the Northern BC region.

How Can Unions Improve their Workplace Human Rights Practice?

In Canada, existing human rights laws are “read in” to collective agreements. Violations of those terms can thus be grieved and submitted to binding arbitration.
Some key human rights cases began as union grievances. However, unions often refrain from active engagement in employment equity, diversity training and anti-bullying programs, especially where the interests of different groups of members may clash, For years, many unions, in effect, “contracted out” discrimination cases to human rights tribunals.
Recently, however, the Supreme Court of Canada moved the goalposts, ruling that unions had exclusive jurisdiction over such matters.
After almost half a century, the human rights ball is firmly back into organized labour’s court. All unions must start once again to take bullying, harassment and discrimination in the workplace seriously, even where such misbehaviour is member-on-member.
What are “best practices” currently by unions in the human rights domain? How do they currently deal with their legal obligation to fairly represent both perpetrators and victims of discrimination? How do they reconcile the vaunted seniority principle with retention of equity-seeking groups? How and why do they participate in and encourage employment equity programs with employers,or demur from doing so ? What lessons can be taken from these experiences?

Production photovoltaïque – Développement de nouveaux matériaux et approches

Grâce à la Loi sur l’énergie verte de l’Ontario, la fabrication solaire connaît une croissance rapide en Ontario avec S2E impliquée dans plusieurs nouvelles initiatives, dont une nouvelle installation de lamination à London, en Ontario. Plusieurs problèmes fondamentaux doivent être abordés dans la procédure de lamination et les matériaux nécessaires à la construction de panneaux photovoltaïques (PV). Pour augmenter l’efficacité des panneaux, ce projet examinera de nouveaux matériaux et l’intégration de divers matériaux absorbant la lumière dans les encapsulants EVA en poly (acétate de vinyle d’éthylène). Nous examinerons de nouveaux revêtements polymères et films ayant des propriétés de captation de lumière, dans lesquels les rayons UV du soleil sont convertis efficacement en longueurs d’onde plus élevées et plus utiles pour une meilleure efficacité des panneaux. Des films EVA novateurs intégrés à des nanocristaux tels que des points quantiques, des nanoparticules de silice mésoporeuses pour le contrôle de la température, et des nanofils de récolte de lumière. Le processus de lamination sera également examiné pour la mise en œuvre de nouvelles technologies.

Norda Stelo : Analyse des données qualitatives pour la maintenance prédictive sur une flotte d’actifs

Dans un contexte de gestion de la santé des actifs industriels, l’apport de l’humain dans la détection et la prévention des problèmes est essentiel. Bien que les actifs soient de plus en plus surveillés par télémétrie, tout ne peut pas être détecté par ces mesures et une appréciation humaine reste importante. Une partie importante de la collecte de données se fait encore par un outil de formulaire numérique, qui génère des données textuelles de choix de réponse et des données textuelles libres. Souvent, bien qu’un effort soit mis pour simplifier les réponses possibles par des choix fixes, de l’information très importante se retrouve dans des champs de commentaires et de précisions qui permettent de mieux apprécier l’état actuel des actifs évalués.
L’objectif du projet est donc de pouvoir extraire les informations importantes, un contexte et un sentiment des textes libres entrés dans les formulaires dans le but de ne rien manquer et de pouvoir nourrir d’autres besoins d’analyses plus poussés. Ce projet vise à extraire l’information pertinente de ces commentaires afin de mieux l’intégrer aux prédictions des maintenances nécessaires à la bonne gestion d’actifs industriels.
