Anonymous Age Verification Using Electrocardiogram (ECG) Obtained from Smart Wearables

Age-verification mandatory procedure for delivering certain services and products. Traditionally, identification documents have been a common mechanism of age-verification. However, this current strategy is subject to certain risks regarding privacy protection and online forgery. This demonstrates the value in anonymous age verification schemes using biometrics. Considering its age-dependent attributes, Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a potential solution. Preliminary experiments have been conducted regarding age estimation- classification from ECG obtained in clinical settings. For wider implementation, it is essential to explore this technology for ECG obtained from smart wearables. This research project aims to serve that purpose. Its successful completion would contribute to determining the feasibility of ECG-based age verification systems for general use.

Analyser et utiliser un canal de propagation dans unenvironnement de haute tension

Les effets négatifs des changements climatiques d’une part et les besoins énergétiques toujours croissants d’autre part ont poussés les décideurs à mettre en place des programmes d’efficacité énergétique. Au-delà d’une prise de conscience collective, il faut fournir les outils et les informations permettant aux utilisateurs finaux et
aux producteurs, transporteurs et distributeurs d’énergie de collaborer dans cet effort d’économie d’énergie. Pour répondre à ce besoin, des réseaux de capteurs doivent être déployés et serviront à connaitre l’état réel des équipements à des fins de pérennité et d’entretien préventif et à les vérifier et à les commander à distance. Le potentiel du sans-fil dans le domaine des capteurs est énorme. Toutefois, son déploiement dans des environnements à fortes perturbations électromagnétiques comme les postes de haute tension reste un défi majeur. Il est donc essentiel de développer des techniques et des outils pour comprendre, maîtriser et rendre plus performant les réseaux de capteurs dans ce type d’environnements hostiles. C’est l’objectif de ce projet de recherche autour de la caractérisation et de la modélisation du canal de propagation dans un
environnement de haute tension.

Differentially private transfer learning for medical image generation to support open research

Our proposal will focus on data synthesis for retina-based disease diagnoses, such as Glaucoma detection. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible but preventable blindness in working-age populations. In 2013, 64.3 million people aged 40–80 years were estimated to suffer from glaucoma, while this number is expected to increase to 76 million by 2020 and 111.8 million by 2040. This project aims to generate privacy-preserving synthetic ophthalmological medical image data, i.e., fundus images, through the use of public data, differential privacy and machine learning-based generative models.

Contrôle de la marche des robots humanoïdes complexes par apprentissage par imitation

The project is part of a Master’s degree Thesis titled “Imitation Learning for Gait Similarity Optimization in Bipedal Locomotion Robots”, which aims to study the application of artificial intelligence techniques to allow humanoid robots to learn how to walk in a way as similar as possible as a human does. Specifically, the project to be developed in UQTR addresses the application of imitation learning algorithms and optimization methods, in conjunction with motion capture data of human locomotion. These motion data describe gait patterns that are compared to those of the robot, so that through a set of specific parameters, the difference is minimized. This optimization process is performed by means of multiple tests, both in a simulation environment and in a real robot (available at the host university), so that the differences between human dynamics and the humanoid robot can be studied and eventually managed.

Dried and redispersible oat oil emulsion powders stabilized by methyl cellulose and nanocellulose

This work aims to protect oat oil and produce new formulated products for food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and household care applications. Specifically, nanocellulose and food-grade cellulose derivatives will be used to stabilize oat oil-in-water emulsions which will be dried into oil powders using spray drying. The powders appear dry but are >90% liquid oil and can be used in the dry form or reconstituted by hand-shaking them in water. Attempts to isolate nanocellulose from oat hulls will be undertaken as a step towards “all oat” dry oat oil powders. This new processing method and encapsulation strategy will have economic, environmental and societal benefits for the agricultural sector and Canada.

Microbial diversity around natural hydrocarbon seeps in relation to petroleum bioprospecting and oil spill bioremediation Year 1

Oil reservoir souring is the production of toxic hydrogen sulfide by sulfate-reducing microorganisms (SRM) through naerobic respiration supported by organic electron donors present in oil fields. In recent years, nitrate injection has merged as a promising green biotechnology that has been proven effective in controlling sulfide production in oil fields. This strategy relies on inducing nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB), which can outcompete SRM for organic lectron donors. However, reports of enhanced localized corrosion associated with nitrate injection have started causing concern among oil companies. This research will test the hypothesis that a related NRB-governed process, nitrate-dependent, Fe(II) oxidation (NDFO), plays a role in oil field ecosystems and contributes to biocorrosion in presence of nitrate. The proposed industry collaboration will therefore assess the functional diversity of oil field NRB in context of souring and corrosion, and provide the first ever investigation of the role of NDFO in reservoir souring control.

Beneva : Explicabilité post-hoc des réseaux profonds

L’utilisation des algorithmes de type « boîte noire » gagne en popularité en entreprise, même au niveau de l’aide à la décision. En assurance collective, ces algorithmes peuvent être d’un précieux soutien pour l’actuaire chargé de la négociation avec un groupe. Toutefois, dans ce contexte, la difficulté à comprendre les prédictions de l’algorithme nuit grandement à l’appropriation de l’outil par l’actuaire. L’objectif général du projet est de trouver une méthode appropriée pour expliquer « post hoc » les prédictions de l’algorithme utilisé pour soutenir la décision de l’actuaire. La méthode proposée devra répondre à deux critères : (1) être fiable (critère de fiabilité) et (2) être compréhensible et concrètement utile pour l’actuaire (critère d’utilité). Jusqu’à maintenant, l’entreprise a essayé les méthodes populaires (SHAP, permutation) un doute important subsiste concernant la fiabilité de ces méthodes.
