Our mission is to provide innovative and sustainable branded products that support business development and create a strong market awareness. The Operations & Website System Designer intern will employ creative technical ideas to improve our order processing system and to create an efficient flow for our orders from quoting to delivery. This project will enable an innovative strategic plan, built on a fresh perspective to improve our website design. The intern will take the lead and identify what would be the best approach to promote our services and will support the design of a marketing plan focused on a well-formulated market penetration strategy. CSR Environmental Ltd- Accounting Intern- Abhinandan

CSR Environmental is a multi-disciplinary Engineering and Environmental Consulting firm providing services on residential, commercial and industrial projects. We conduct various environmental impact assessments to support our clients’ understanding of the environmental implications when they start a project. We also assist clients in obtaining the permits required to apply for and carry out development projects and can help identify strategies to prevent or minimize adverse effects to the environment prior to, during, or after development. This accounting related project will focus on the development of a new invoicing system, which would integrate with our existing system and accommodate the extent of our business growth. The intern will learn how information flows throughout our business, asses our current steps in the accounting cycle, identify improvements, and recommend steps for implementing a more efficient system. The project will include the design of an updated process flow for accounting documentation.

Clarifying Questions for Conversational Agents

Many conversational agents blend the functionalities of question-answering and chit-chat into a single system. This lays the foundation for a more interactive type of question-answering models which is the primary focus of the research project. Interaction between a user and the agent allows the user to ask an underdefined or ambiguous question, and, instead of the system returning its best response, the system is able to ask clarifying questions to help it hone in on an answer it can be more confident in. Similarly, when the user doesn’t like or agree with the agent’s answer, the system is able to elicit more information from the user that can help the system produce a better answer from the user’s perspective.

Emerging approaches to policy and regulation of online video services in Canada and Argentina

The project consist of analyzing the emerging approaches for policy-making and regulation of global online video service providers in Argentina and Canada. Some of the ongoing discussions on how to address them follow the European approach, after the enactment of the 2018 Audiovisual Service Directive. Measures such as content quotas, financial contributions and prominence obligations on national content are being discussed in Argentina and Canada as methods to address the problems of market failures, safeguard national identities and promote diversity.
The expected result of the plan is to publish an article in a top ranked journal in order to make a contribution to the tradition of political economy studies as well as to policy- makers. It is also expected to strengthen our research networking by attending to the Global Media Internet Concentration Project First conference, where I participate as a researcher and a member of the Executing Steering Commitee.

La diversité bio-culturelle comme outil de lutte biologique en agriculture urbaine

L’étude porte sur les associations de plantes en agriculture urbaine au sein des plantes de la famille des Brassicacées, tels que le chou, le brocoli, la moutarde, la roquette, etc. Certaines plantes en compagnonnage
aux cultures de la famille des Brassicacées ont des fonctions intéressantes pouvant l’imiter l’infestation d’insectes ravageurs. Les insectes ravageurs peuvent nuire à la productivité de ces cultures et parfois même, tuer les jeunes plants. Certaines plantes compagnes ont des fonctions répulsives envers des insecte ravageurs alors que d’autres peuvent être utilisées comme cultures-pièges, afin de détourner les insectes ravageurs de la culture principale. Plusieurs chercheurs suggèrent de multiplier les types d’association végétale et les types de plantes compagnes. L’étude a donc pour hypothèse que la biodiversité pourrait être une solution à l’infestation des ravageurs au sein des plantes de la famille des Brassicacées, comme le chou.

Hardy Sales-Operations and Supply Chain Intern-Abhishek

Hardy Sales, one of the most reliable suppliers for perishable foods in Western Canada, distributes meat, deli, seafood, and bakery items to both Retail and Food Service customers through using warehouse facilities located in British Columbia and Alberta. A family business that opened doors in 1982, operating out of one of the owners’ basements, Hardy Sales has grown into one of Western Canada’s leading perishable food distributors. By constantly developing new product offerings and implementing new processes, we ensure to regularly improve our customers’ experience. This project will focus on identifying more cost-effective ways to operate a cold storage warehouse and will concentrate its attention on making operations more efficient; the intern will work on establishing a process that will optimize costs that are currently increasing throughout the supply chain industry. This project will identify, test, and implement various cost-saving measures, while allowing a student from the Operations and Supply Chain Management program at KPU to apply their knowledge and skills into real-life operations.

Sentiment analysis on cryptocurrencies and stocks

The objective of this project is to create market sentiment indicators for cryptocurrencies. Market sentiment indicators are built from text analysis of exchanges on Twitter and other sources, that may include embedded or references images (e.g., price curves) and videos. The text dataset for cryptocurrencies may have a very structure from that of traditional currencies. For example, cryptocurrency tweets may reference ‘mining’, which is a concept that does not exist for traditional currencies. Challenges in deriving sentiment indicators arise due to the structure of the tweets, which are very short, but which can reference longer documents, and contain sarcasm and humor that are often present in cryptocurrency discussions. We shall work with the partner to develop methods from machine learning and natural language that that perform well in detecting market sentiment indicators for cryptocurrencies and incorporate these indicators into future modelling frameworks and products.

Clarius Mobile Health-Accounting Intern-Prabh

Clarius’ mission is to make accurate, easy-to-use and affordable ultrasound tools available to all medical professionals. Its handheld wireless ultrasound scanners connect to iOS and Android devices, delivering high-resolution ultrasound images traditionally only available with bulkier, high-end systems. Twenty thousand users have performed more than half a million scans since Clarius introduced its first portable scanner in 2016. This project will focus on cash flow optimization, DSO reduction, error minimization, and support our transition to electronic payment methods. The need for modernized processes around accounts receivable is acute and this accounting related internship will bring a new skill sets and fresher perspective to problem solving. This project will support the transition towards smoother and more efficient accounting operations. The project will also include work on optimizing our day-to-day processes and support the adoption of a new technology.

Valorisation de résidus organiques humides par vapocraquage et biométhanisation

L’usage excessif des plastiques à l’échelle mondiale engendre de grands défis liés au control de la pollution, particulièrement dans les océans, mais aussi au niveau de l’empreinte carbonique de leur production. Dans le contexte de crise sanitaire actuel due à la COVID-19, les équipements de protection personnel sont nécessaires et leurs utilisation, obligatoire, a augmenté de manière exponentielle. Les déchets engendrés par ces équipements à usage uniques ne sont toutefois pas encore recyclables, et leur disposition est réduite à l’enfouissement ou à l’incinération. Ce projet se penche sur la valorisation de ces déchets pour la production de carburants durables. Les produits issus de la valorisation doivent avoir une formulation finale ajustée certifié durable (certification ISCC).

Senior Appropriate & Culturally Sensitive Housing in Vancouver Chinatown

Chinatown’s community is diverse and while many seniors live in the
neighborhood, there are many seniors who commute daily to spend
the day in Chinatown. Censuses have shown that the senior
population is rapidly increasing, thus providing a continuum of housing
is a key factor to creating a resilient community. An initial study of
housing inventory for Chinese seniors, living within the Downtown
EastSide Boundary, was the first step toward a housing strategy for
Chinatown. To further develop this research, our study seeks to
understand where Chinese seniors, who are day-visitors to
Chinatown, live and if they would live in the neighborhood given that
housing opportunities existed. We ask: how can we better plan for this
community ?
We propose a two-step study that aims to understand the community and best practices
around housing for the continuum of aging. The study will be performed in two stages:

PLAN PARFAIT / PERFECT PLAN : L’habiter entre l’idéal et le pragmatisme

Comment réconcilier l’idéal du ‘plan parfait’ avec la problématique pragmatique de l’habitation?
Ce projet explore la rencontre entre deux aspects fondamentaux de l’architecture résidentielle – entre l’architecture comme manifestation formelle et spatiale des idées pures, et l’architecture comme réponse pragmatique aux problèmes spécifiques de l’habitation. Le projet examine la problématique de l’habiter et les réponses typologiques qui en émanent. Le plan architectural est utilisé comme lentille et principal outil conceptuel de cette exploration.
Ce projet est une collaboration entre l’agence d’architecture Pelletier de Fontenay et l’équipe de recherche du professeurSinisha Brdar, professeur à l’École de design de l’UQAM. Les enjeux de la conception de l’habitation sont au cœur de la pratique architecturale de Pelletier de Fontenay et du projet pédagogique à l’École de design de l’UQAM.
