Army-split, State Disintegration, and Civil War

Over the past decades, civil war onset has been a primary scholarly focus. Yet, most studies consider civil war onset to generally take the form of peripheral insurgencies. Based on recent advances in the literature (e.g., McLauchlin 2022; Siberdt 2022), we identify a distinct pathway to civil war, which takes the form of state disintegration and army-split. We examine the patterns and dynamics at play in this specific type of civil war onset through the combination of cross-national statistical analysis and in-depth case studies. We expect to find clear evidence that specific features and political practices, such as the personalization of political power or the overlap between internal tensions among the civil and the military elites, substantively increase the likely of this type of civil war onset. Based on the statistical results and case studies, we then turn to the detailed examination of the current conditions and civil-military relations in the United States and assess whether there exists a risk of civil war onset. Understanding the dynamics of state disintegration is essential as evidence suggests that if there were to be a civil war in the United States, it would likely take this form.

Thermal Simulation and Analysis of Advanced Avionic Modules and Antennas

As a full-service, data-driven solutions provider for aviation, SKYTRAC Systems is developing new 2-MCU
satellite communications (SATCOM) terminal, SDL-350, which will be capable of achieving globally
available broadband transfer rates of 352 kbps both to and from the aircraft. One critical challenge facing
the R&D engineers of SDL-350 is the thermal management, because the power dissipation level of SDL-
350 is beyond what is achievable for the convectional thermal designs of avionics. Dr. Li will partner with
SKYTRAC to develop effective thermal designs for avionic modules and antennas which will enable all
avionic components to operate within their qualified temperature limits.

Transfer learning for semantic segmentation of fungal growth images to accelerate high-throughput fungicide development

There is a growing need to develop new crop protection products that are more effective against fungal disease and mitigate pathogen resistance. The fungicide product development process is time consuming and expensive and there is a great opportunity to reduce costs and time by using machine learning. In this project, an existing deep learning algorithm for quantifying fungal growth in 96-well plate images will be transferred to new pathogens to extend Terramera’s automated high-throughput screening pipeline. This application will eliminate time-consuming manual analysis and accelerate the in-vitro testing stage in Terramera’s product development.

The interns will provide support by compiling information to be included in the container file along with the audio: metadata such as correct attributions (composers, performers), historical circumstances of the recording, analytic capsule summaries of classical works, aesthetic and cultural importance of the recording, and other necessary items that vary with the repertoire. Effet du contexte et des perceptions des parties prenantes dans le développement de dispositifs d’accompagnement entrepreneurial de proximité en Afrique, à travers l’étude de cas du projet Djonkoli Kènè au Mali.

Ce travail de recherche vise à créer une image riche de l’accompagnement entrepreneurial dans le cadre du projet Djonkoli Kènè au Mali. Djonkoli Kènè est menée par le Carrefour de Solidarité internationale en collaboration avec l’Accélarateur entrepreneurial Desjardins et l’association Malienne Kilabo. Ils mettent en œuvre un soutien de proximité basé sur des formations, un accompagnement personnalisé et des appuis matériels aux jeunes et aux femmes. 72 jeunes et femmes bénéficient actuellement de leur soutien dans le cadre de ce projet. Nous allons pour ce travail de recherche, combiner une analyse statistique rigoureuse à la méthode des systèmes souples qui est une méthodologie qui permet d’enquêter sur les activités humaines, et d’interpréter de manière flexible, l’expérience humaine à partir du terrain. Sur la base d’itérations entre collecte de données terrain et revue de concepts dans la littérature, puis modélisation, nous parviendrons à décrire dans son ensemble le système d’accompagnement utilisé par Kilabo.

Ce projet vise à développer une méthode d’estimation du temps de production de pièces similaires par apprentissage automatique. Cette méthode fournira une estimation de chaque champ du temps de production d’une pièce d’avion en ayant comme données d’entrée l’historique de fabrication de pièces similaires. L’estimation du temps de production permettra de raccourcir le délai tant au niveau de l’étude de la rentabilité de fabriquer de nouvelles pièces qu’au niveau de leur industrialisation. Cela aura également un impact sur la qualité des estimations des coûts des nouvelles pièces et de leur rentabilité, ainsi que des estimations de la charge additionnelle sur les machines et les employés.

Augmented Reality in Architectural Praxis

This project examines to the innovative use of Augmented Reality (AR) technologies that have yet to be fully integrated in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. The research focuses on the capacity of AR to bridge the gap between design and construction. The role of the student is to conduct an initial literature review of construction practice and perform an industry analysis of where AR would be most applicable. The student will also embark on the creation of prototype procedures for best practice with the use of AR via emergent hardware and software, at a variety of scales and applications. In order to disseminate the research emerging from this endeavor, the student will also partake in the writing and presentation of several conference papers and journal articles over the course of the project. The exploration of the implementation of AR into various fabrication and construction techniques will involve the development of computational workflows and investigations into the technology’s accuracy in relation to material capabilities.

Validation des marqueurs cellulaires ChromaLive sur modèles d’organopuces.

Saguaro Technologies est une entreprise qui oeuvre dans le domaine de la recherche pré-clinique. Elle vise à commercialiser une panoplie de produits de recherche innovants qui permettront à ses utilisateurs de mieux prédire le comportement des cellules humaines avant même de tester leurs produits en clinique. Un de ces produits, nommé ChromaLive, est un marqueur cellulaire fluorescent et non-toxique et permet de monitorer plusieurs caractéristiques cellulaires simultanément.
Le but de ce projet est de fournir des validations pour le ChromaLive. En utilisant des approches qui sont aux limites de l’innovation (modèles de culture cellulaire en 3D, utilisation de l’intelligence artificielle pour analyser les molécules issues du métabolisme, microscopie non-biaisée), des données seront générées concernant l’impact du ChromaLive sur les cellules humaines, sa spécificité et sa réponse à divers stimuli cellulaires. Ces données mettront en lumière le caractère unique et novateur du ChromaLive et contribueront à convaincre les utilisateurs potentiels de sa valeur.

Remote Indigenous communities governed by Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) will be engaged in a multi-criteria geospatial evaluation. The focus of the internships is to research the factors that can constrain and enable renewable energy (RE) development in the communities. The geospatial assessment will be based on structured cartographic modelling and map overlays that are informed by community participation. The outputs of this project will constitute a pre-feasibility assessment that can be used to guide more detailed engineering and operational assessments and inform RE project development processes in the partner communities.

Professional Sport Club Value: Competition Time

Four leagues, the NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB, dominate professional sport in North America. One of the disparities between all four leagues is the number of regular season games played, or for the purpose of this study competition time. There are also large differences between league revenues and thus the study will examine if there is a relationship between league revenue and competition time. A series of studies will be analyzed to determine if in fact there is a relationship between competition time and league. The results of the study will show the amount of competition time that is beneficial for each league in order to generate the highest amount of revenue. This study is beneficial to the partner organization, as it will provide a large professional sport database for client proposals and projects. The results can also be used to leverage future projects, attracting new clients in the professional sport sector.

Assessment of life cycle environmental and economic sustainability of kidney care services: A case study of British Columbia

Climate change is one of the greatest threats to human health in the 21st century, with approximately one in four worldwide, attributable to environmental factors (1). Ironically, healthcare itself is responsible for 5% of annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, equivalent to airplane travel (2). Within healthcare, kidney care services have substantial environmental impacts compared to other medical treatments. These services include non-dialysis care, dialysis treatments, and transplantation. Environmental impact studies of kidney care are in its infancy, and specifically, there have been no studies evaluating the impact of kidney care in Canada. This study will be the first life cycle assessment of therapies for kidney disease in BC. This will provide important information that will guide data driven decisions on sustainability, optimal patient outcomes and cost effectiveness.

The proposed project examines the relationship between the City of Edmonton and arts space (re)development by arts and cultural organizations, asking: Can the relationship be improved? If so, how? Relying on a document analysis and semi-structured interviews with government actors and arts organizations, the objective is to better understand municipal governance structures and processes of relevance to organizations (re)developing arts space in Edmonton. The research will enable Arts Habitat Edmonton to better assist organizations undergoing these processes. It will also provide the foundation for recommendations to improve the experience of arts space managers and developers aiming to provide accessible arts spaces.
