Development of Empirical Costing Models and Project Planning Tools for Mine Development and Services for Underground Mines

This project aims to develop cost estimation models using data analytics and machine learning techniques. In addition, throughout project execution, cost control and monitoring approaches will be further explored. These approaches will benefit from Work breakdown structures (WBS) and Enterprise Resource Planning models (ERP). Finally, the research will focus on developing project planning and management tool based on the Critical Path Method (CPM) and Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). This tool will determine the shortest completion time of an underground mining project, formulated as an optimization problem. The risk associated with the project’s uncertainties will be assessed through a discrete event simulation model. This research will deliver cost optimization and project planning tool for mining contractors.

An analysis of the challenges of building machine learning-based intrusion detection systems

Network attacks are becoming more complex every day. It is crucial that we use tools that can detect these sophisticated attacks on networks so that we can identify malicious behavior and prevent attacks and intrusions. The use of machine learning to create intrusion detection engines is great, and we need enough data to train these engines. The purpose of this project is to analyze the problems of existing public datasets and the challenges involved in finding the right machine learning techniques and settings for them.

Towards an integrated framework for propulsion, aerothermal heating, and control for hypersonic UAVs

Commercial Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are purpose-built vehicles that are tailored to the intended applications and use cases. As the use cases for UAVs continue to grow, so do the needs for new, bespoke vehicle designs. This is especially true in the use of UAVs for high-speed reconnaissance and surveillance where speed and agility must be balanced with reliability, efficiency and environmental impact. To meet the specific performance requirements, the novel UAV designs ultimately revolve around the selection and integration of the propulsion system, while considering aerothermal heating effects and control systems. The current research program seeks develop an integrated framework for the design of a novel class of hypersonic UAVs. This work will help UVAD develop and commercialize the first, designed-in-Canada hypersonic UAV to compete on the global market.

Linking fertiliser recommendations to nutrient use efficiency and crop productivity on Labrador farms; role of soil carbon

Farming on lands converted from boreal forest is challenged by the low fertility, high acidity and metal toxicity of their soils. Soil organic matter mitigates loss of fertility and facilitates retention and use efficiency of nutrients added with fertilisers. Fertilisers are the most expensive inputs for the farms in the region. Currently there is no fertiliser recommendation system that has been specifically calibrated for such lands. This project will integrate a full cropping cycle assessment of carbon and nutrients for a first-time calibration of nutrient usage for farmlands on lands converted from boreal forest. A full assessment of the carbon pools in a new, just-converted farm will be used for the establishment of a baseline that can support long term monitoring and calibration of crop management decisions.

The R-Tech data rover – from prototype to commercial product

Manitoba has an opportunity to transform agriculture practices through advances in sensors, robotics, and machine learn-ing. Real-time, automated methods of in-field data collection are needed to increase productivity and sustainability in production agriculture, to expedite plant breeding and research, and to further the uptake of organic farming. To this end, we are developing a self-propelled, GPS-guided data rover for the rapid collection of plant images and environmental data in test plots, organic farms, and with partner EMILI, across a full-scale commercial farm. Large volumes of high-quality, in-field data are crucial for the development of crop scouting technology that will, for example, identify weeds amongst crops, characterize plant health and yield, or detect disease. This project is the next innovative leap by the Terra-Byte research group and its collaborators. A first data rover was designed and built by R-Tech Industries and fitted with GPS control by Northstar Robotics, both Manitoba companies. In-field testing and data collection will be used to update and improve this prototype into a final commercial product. As such, this project represents an exciting new frontier in the long and venerable tradition of agriculture implement development in Manitoba.

Follow the Money: Tracking The Influence Of Third Party Donors on Democracy

This project collects and analyzes data about third party advertisers in Canadian federal elections. Third party advertisers are permitted to accept large donations from individuals, unions, and corporations, and to use these funds to directly intervene in Canadian elections, and yet we know very little about how these organizations operate. This project compiles third party advertiser financial returns in order to create a single searchable and public repository of all third party donations and spending since 2000. It then leverages those data to investigate who funds these organizations and which types of interests they advance in the public sphere. The expected benefit of this project to the IJF is increased readership for its public interest investigative journalism.
