The intern’s project comprises an internship at a consulting firm in Canada. They will conduct research into mechanical systems, evaluating the best methods and materials that are to be implemented in the construction of a hospital. Through this project, the intern will increase their professional network, and the level of experience they have in the field of engineering. This will allow them to share their experiences and insight gained in an extremely competitive atmosphere, enabling future Cansbridge fellows to work in such companies, having gained an understanding of the work ethic and what to expect.

The research will involve identifying greenhouse gas reduction options for the oil and gas sector’s drilling and completions operations. Scope 1 emissions (i.e., emissions directly from operations) and scope 2 emissions (emissions from utility supplied power) will be tackled.
This will be done by looking into using utility supplied power to operate drilling rigs, using natural gas to power turbines which will provide electricity for fracturing fleets, utilizing natural gas powered pumps for fracturing, and design and installation of a mini solar farm to supplement electricity on site. These reduction options if implemented will help the organization on their path to achieve net-zero scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.

Online misinformation is a threat to Canada’s democratic processes, economic activities and public health. Individuals need to be empowered to critically evaluate the online information they consume in a consistent manner, otherwise, they will fall victim to manipulation, deception, polarization, radicalization, etc, efforts from malicious cyber actors. The intern will review the latest findings from behavioural science and incorporate those to design alternative conceptual solutions that can consistently nudge people to think critically about digital media until critical thinking becomes their second nature. The intern will prototype the best solution and gather feedback for further improvement. The project aligns with the Cansbrige Fellowship’s high-level goal to strengthen the business engagement between Canada and Asia by inculcating critical thinking to business-related information among members of the Canadian business communities.
