Sara Riel is partnering with Ogijiita Pimatiswin Kinamatawin (OPK) to provide services to individuals who find themselves in a place of need. OPK provides a variety of services such as counselling, crisis intervention, case management, consultation, employment oppurtunities and community service. Sara Riel and OPK provides these services to a wide variety of individuals. OPK specializes in aiding individuals who are facing complex problems such as gang involvement, sexual exploitation, addictions, self-harm, mental health issues, and problems with the law to name a few. The internsjop will increase the staff of OPK and in turn increase the organizations ability to provide aid in the community.

At this placement I will be assisting on many tasks which will benefit society and specified communities. Part of my work will be tracking supports, items, or services that are needed at the location. Doing this will help other interns and volunteers in the future so they know what kind of support is needed regularly. I will also help to build and expand the relationships with other organizations and partners that will facilitate our delivery of services. Logging and tracking this information will also allow us to find gaps in the types of services offered and items needed which will allow us to build additional relationships and predict future needs. This is especially important for people who need assistance to maintain their housing.

3D Ultrasound Volume Reconstruction from Inside-Out Tracking of a 2D Probe

Small, handheld, point-of-care ultrasound devices (POCUS) have been increasingly used in recent years by non-specialists for a wide variety of diagnostic and treatment tasks. Since POCUS devices produce two-dimensional (2D) images, but anatomical structures are three-dimensional, we would often like to construct 3D volumes from a sequence of 2D US scans. We can measure the location of a 2D probe using external cameras, but this is not clinically convenient, so instead we propose to use outward-looking cameras to determine the probe’s location based on objects the camera can see from the probe’s location. We will test the accuracy of this approach in a model of a key clinical application of interest – meas-uring the hip structure of newborn infants suspected of having a congenital abnormality. The partner organization will benefit by gaining insight into how effective “inside-out” tracking might be in a selected clinical application, which might help them determine whether this approach could be used in a variety of other applications.

Multimodal Representation Learning from raw data to detect customers emotional state in the financial industry with Attention Mechanism

Currently, call centres effort in this matter is largely reactive. Someone calls in, they are upset, and agents respond accordingly. However, this approach is not always most effective, especially with difficult customers. Therefore, knowing the customers current emotional state is very important for appropriate problem solving. Affective computing can be used to detect and evaluate the client emotion rapidly, for example if the customer is angry or frustrated the algorithm will find out that emotional state and alert the agent to be more patient, understandable, and most importantly know how to deal with the client.

Prototype d’une bourse du carbone citoyenne

Nous proposons un système de bourse du carbone qui offre l’opportunité aux citoyens de participer à la lutte aux changements climatiques. Dans ce système, tous les humains ont le droit d’émettre une certaine quantité de carbone chaque année. Ce quota d’émission diminue graduellement d’année en année, de façon à respecter l’Accord de Paris. Un citoyen responsable qui choisit de participer à cette bourse du carbone se voit attribuer sa part d’émissions de carbone, qui correspond aux émissions de son pays par habitant. Si vous décidez de participer à cette bourse du carbone, et que vos émissions dépassent votre quota, vous pouvez acheter des crédits carbone (quotas non utilisés) à d’autres personnes qui habitent dans des pays qui émettent moins de carbone par habitant. Notre projet d’innovation consiste à concevoir une application web simple et agréable d’utilisation qui servira de prototype pour cette bourse du carbone citoyenne.

Integration of Low Impact Development stormwater practices into the development of smart community

Development of stormwater management plans in Ontario has focused primarily on sizing of conveyance infrastructure and stormwater management ponds that mitigate the receiving water impacts of new developments. The focus has shifted in recent years towards the implementation of Low Impact Development (LID) that emphasizes the control of stormwater runoff at the source. Although several methods and tools have been developed to aid in planning and design of LID practices, there is a need for better integration of these tools into development and assessment of alternative site layouts to meet regulatory requirements for the protection of receiving waters. This research will focus on providing a closer linkage between the conceptual site design and stormwater performance assessment by linking site design tools with USEPA Stormwater Management Model (SWMM). The developed methodology will be tested on the Smart Community project, allowing a quick effectiveness assessment of a variety of LID practices into alternative site designs covering both their hydrologic performance and cost.

Comparison of algorithms for predicting drug-target interactions and performance benefits of ensemble learning

The goal of this project is to compare the results of several state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) models in the field of drug discovery. Specifically, the intern will recreate several models whose creators claimed are successful at predicting which drugs would interact with what proteins in the human body. In addition, the intern will design a model of their own based on existing successful models and their own ideas. Lastly the output of these various models will be combined to give a single, accurate prediction regarding which pairs of drugs and proteins will interact. This project will help reproduce and validate the results of these models, provide a novel solution to the problem they are designed to solve, and help evaluate the benefits of combining the results of various models in this fashion. In addition, this work will form a valuable addition to Modelis’ computation drug discovery pipeline.

Developing a novel Rammed Earth technology for climate-adapting construction

The Rammed Earth (RE) has become the newest trend in construction owing to its energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and sustainable approach. The recent research has modernized rammed earth construction by using cement treatment to improve its strength and durability. The non-compensable damages to the environment associated with cement production and application pose significant arguments against its widespread use in rammed earth construction. Our partner organization, Innovative Earth Inc. uses traditional rammed earth walls in construction and they are excited with an opportunity to design next generation rammed earth materials. Our new RE technology is anticipated to outperform the conventional ones in thermomechanical and durability properties, and at the same time act as a reservoir for long-term carbon sequestration.

Development of recyclable metal-infused feedstock for low-cost 3D printing in the context of circular manufacturing

As the circular economy and circular manufacturing approaches are strongly focusing on reuse, repair, remanufacturing and recycling, it is very important to investigate new materials for fabrication of metal/polymer filaments for low-cost 3D printing. In this project recyclable metal-infused feedstocks with high concentration of metal powder (up to 60 vol.%) for filament fabrication will be developed. For this environmentally friendly extracted carbonyl nickel and iron powders will be used. Metal/polymer filament fabrication will be done by simple melting process using one screw extruder. Prior the extrusion two pre-mix approaches will be used for better particle dispersion inside the polymer matrix. The recyclable polymers in powder form and bio-based polymers will be tested as potential matrixes for metal/polymer filament fabrication. Recyclable polymers in powder form are good chose due to simple pre-mis procedure which include just physical mixing of polymer powder with metal powder without using any intermediate steps with uses/extraction of solvent.

Développement d’une dalle de toit-terrasse polymérique à albédo élevé, avec fort contenu en matières recyclés

Dans une perspective de développement durable et d’adéquation avec les principes de l’économie circulaire, il est souhaitable de favoriser l’utilisation de matières recyclées et/ou naturelles en remplacement de matières premières de source synthétiques dans les matériaux polymères.
De plus, la tendance actuelle de l’industrie des matériaux est d’obtenir des matériaux qui permettent de remplir plusieurs fonctions. Dans le cadre de ce projet, il est prévu de se concentrer sur le développement d’une dalle à base de polymère avec fort contenu de matières naturelles/recyclées et albédo élevé (propriété de réflexion de la lumière). Cette dalle sera utilisée dans les projets de toiture-terrasse pour les bâtiments afin de réduire la contribution des toitures au phénomène d’îlot de chaleur.
