Hosted VOIP – Sun Peaks Resort LLP

Sun Peaks Resort is introducing a hybrid VOIP (Voice over IP) solution for Sun Peaks Resort LLP in 2022. This solution would see business critical land lines migrated from our on premise VOIP system, to a cloud based VOIP system. The current phone system is aging and unsupported, replacement parts are also difficult to find. The current system also does not offer modern guest service features such as IVR, interactive voice response. Another limitation of the system is due to its on-premise installation, this makes remote work difficult and expensive to implement.

Accounting Process Narrative Development

The intern will assist Techni-Craft (TC) in creating new process narratives for our new accounting software set to launch in early 2023. The intern will work collaboratively with the accounting team to determine what the process narrative should look like and then will be responsible for executing the final report. This project will have an enormous benefit to TC as we are a small business with limited capacity, so the opportunity to have an intern available to help prioritize updating the process narratives will result in a successful implementation and execution of our new accounting software.

Improving Cognitive and Collaborative Support for Security Threat Hunters

Threat hunters play a critical role in ensuring the security of Canadian corporate and government agency systems. Threat hunters monitor how data, systems, and networks are accessed to be aware of possible threats that may occur before systems or data sources are compromised. Working in teams, threat hunters generate hypotheses and proactively analyze massive amounts of system and network data to detect and isolate impending threats. Current tools are developed without a good understanding of the cognitive and collaborative needs of threat hunters. Through this collaborative project, we will develop an understanding of the different types of threat hunter personas, the tasks they do and the challenges faced. Using these insights, we will design, develop and evaluate novel tools for threat hunters to more effectively visualize, analyze and share information on possible threats. These findings will directly help Micro Focus to improve the threat hunting tools they develop.

Assessing sensitivity of subsurface mine-dewatering activities to climate change

Subsurface dewatering is critical to the safe and economic operation of mines. Operational planning for dewatering often necessitates advanced numerical models for accurate prediction and requires a well-defined understanding of the regional geology, hydrology and hydrogeology, and how this influences infiltration of groundwater into mining pits and underground galleries as well as sources of recharge. It is predicted that increased climate variability will cause significantly different precipitation intensities and patterns, including the timing and duration of snowmelt events, which will impact infiltration volumes and timing. The objective of this work is to quantify the impact of changing climate conditions on predicted mine dewatering volumes and environmental impacts using hydrological models.

Community-based water quality monitoring program for Halifax Regional Municipality

The community-based water quality program for Halifax Regional Municipality will target 76 lakes in the region to establish a long-term monitoring program to understand the trajectory of freshwater aquatic systems under continued and expanding urbanized influence. This new program will be led by HRM’s Water Program Coordinator with support from the Environment & Climate Change team. Data will be collected by the internship students associated with this project, local community organizations, and local consultants, creating a hybrid model of monitoring. This program will sample lakes that have been identified as highly or moderately vulnerable. Gathering of data will take place twice a year through a combination of HRM-support gathering (e.g. through staff or contractors) and HRM-trained community teams referred to as “LakeWatchers”. The purpose of this communications plan is to coordination actions and efforts in support of informing the municipality about this program, its intent, and how to get involved.

Methods for evaluating the reactivity of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) for use in concrete

The use of pozzolans as a supplementary cementing material (SCM) to partially replace Portland cement in concrete is well established and can lead to many benefits including improved durability and a lower carbon footprint. The concrete industry needs to find alternative sources of pozzolans to replace fly ash and slag; among the most promising alternatives are natural pozzolans, ground glass and ash “harvested” from landfill sites where fly ash has been dumped for decades. The term “natural pozzolans” covers a very broad range of materials from raw deposits of volcanic ash, pumice and trass (to name a few) to calcined clays and shales; the impact of these materials on the performance of concrete varies widely. Unfortunately, existing standardized tests in the cementitious materials standards (e.g. CSA A3000) are not capable of reliably determining the suitability of pozzolans for use in concrete, and their use can often result in acceptance of unsuitable inert materials with little to no pozzolanic properties. A number of new tests and modifications to existing tests have been proposed but research is required to determine which of these tests are the most reliable and what acceptance limits would be appropriate.

TAVI DFB Laser with a Higher Order Surface-Etched Grating

Optical telecommunication systems are continuously facing new challenges in terms of capacity and cost as a result of everincreasing Internet traffic. The continuing traffic growth imposes challenges associate with increasing complexity and power consumption at the network nodes and data centres, which are expected to handle more and more data. As a result, the latter require innovative approaches facilitating capacity growth at reduced energy consumption. Specifically, there is a demand for improved, more efficient lasers to be implemented with the wavelength-division multiplexing systems at the data centres and network nodes. This project’s main goal is to design a cost-efficient on-chip integrated laser that can act as an optical emitter in data centres.

Assessing Parent and Child Development in the IPALS Program

Families can play an important role in helping prepare their children to learn to read by engaging in activities that support pre-literacy skills. Not all parents are aware of their abilities to help their children however, and this is often especially the case in immigrant families, where cultural practices surrounding education – especially the families role in education – can be different. Decoda Literacy Solutions (DLS) leads community-based programs that help immigrant families learn more about literacy supporting practices they can do in the home, and gives families the knowledge, tools, and confidence to participate in Canadian community and educational institutions like libraries and schools. This study will help DLS evaluate their program by looking at child and family-based outcomes using both standardized measurements and interviews. The goal is to understand the efficacy of the program, in order to help support literacy for all Canadians.
