Predicting for Targeted Advertising by Maximum Information Coefficient

Predictive modeling is a statistical data mining approach that builds a prediction function from the observed data. The function is then used to estimate a value of a dependent variable for new data. The objective of the project is to develop predictive models by machine learning approach and data mining techniques from the large volum of data collected at the partner site. The intension is to study applications of some most recent adademic reserach restuls to an industry product, a real-time analytics and data-intensive platfome. The resutls will be compared with the current system performance and have signaficent impact on the further development of the partner’s business

North Park Neighbourhood Needs Assessment

The North Park Neighbourhood Association in partnership with the University of Victoria will undertake the planning process for a future community needs assessment to gather information on the health, wellness, and social inclusion of those who live, work, and spend time in North Park. The planning process will be done in partnership with the NPNA to develop key informant interview guides, and community townhall facilitation guides. Furthermore, the planning process will create outreach strategies for engaging with a variety of different members of the community to participate in the project and gain valuable understanding and feedback on the needs and wants in the community. The tools developed will be shared publicly, and can be used to implement community needs assessments.

Arctic Research Foundation Unstructured Data

The Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is a private, non-profit organization creating a new kind of scientific infrastructure for the Canadian Arctic, through its operation of efficient, cutting-edge research vessels and selfpowered mobile labs. It coordinates and catalyzes scientific, cultural and economic research in the Arctic. It partners with governments, universities and other research institutions that require access to innovative infrastructure to conduct program initiatives in the Arctic. It builds relationships with Arctic Indigenous peoples to advance the understanding of the region with traditional knowledge. Over the years—especially in the current era of big data, ARF has generated and collected a huge volume of big data. These include animal stock assessments, hydrographic and bathymetric data, information on soil and salinity samples, information and analysis on changing ice conditions, as well as data generated through ARF Naurvik plant production pod. However, these disparate data from across the Arctic need to be managed, catalogued and made accessible through a publicly-accessible database.

Leav, une startup spécialisée en solutions de magasinage autonome pour le commerce de détail, cherche à développer un système de vision par ordinateur qui permettra à tout type de détaillant d’automatiser leurs caisses facilement et abordablement. Le projet sera d’une durée de 4 mois et débutera en octobre 2021 avec une date de fin prévue pour février 2022. L’objectif du projet est d’utiliser des librairies ouvertes, comme OpenCV, pour développer un prototype de reconnaissance de squelettes et de gestes ayant une fiabilité de 75% qui sera déployé dans des commerces de détail pour réduire le vol à l’étalage.

This project supports a carbon management project involving Advanced CERT Canada active in Energy and Environment. The project aims to remove obstacle to cost effective developments of carbon emission reduction in Canada. This will be through developing strategies and techniques to capture CO2 using Amine-Functionalized MOFs. The MITACS support will be used to hire a research assistant to support the activities envisaged in the project. The researcher will be supporting computational modelling and design and operations of tests systems at Memorial University (MUN).

Development of RWA tools for the design,operation and migration of terrestrial andsubmarine coherent networks

The project covers the design and optimization of long-haul and ultra long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. The objective is to develop routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms for next-generation terrestrial and undersea networks that are based on the use of highspeed dual-polarization coherent transponders. The goal is to improve the performance and accuracy of the RWA results and therefore to get more powerful tools for increasing network capacity and planning network migrations.

Credit Adjudication Process Review

ATB Financial Business Credit aims to improve the velocity of credit applications through ATB’s internal adjudication processes while at the same time maintaining or improving the risk profile (“quality”) of ATB’s commercial portfolio. ATB has determined that automating the credit application process over the next 1 to 2 years is the solution to achieving the above desired outcome. The current “analog” process must be optimized in preparation for this digital transformation. The Credit Process Review project will yield recommendations for the following: 1) streamlining workflow resulting in efficiencies in anticipation of pursuing a technology solution; and, 2) building additional capacity in the Business Credit Group to ensure technological change is successful.

Assessment of Decoating Strategies for Aerospace Structures

Removal of specialized coatings and paint from lightweight aircraft structures through laser ablation is very
promising and environmentally safe decoating process compared to existing methods such as chemical stripping.
However, research is needed to understand the effect of the laser process on the underlying materials. This
project will include an in-depth experimental study of the mechanical properties and the use of computer modelling
to predict these effects to improve future decoating processes.

Characterizing the key aroma-active compounds and non-volatile compounds in raw and processed salmon (Salmo salar) and salmon alternative products

Fish are an important food source; however, the sustainability of current seafood
supplies is a major concern for key stakeholders. The development of plant-based seafood is an underexplored
path that could alleviate some of the pressures on aquatic ecosystems. Although, flavour is an important attribute
that determines the acceptability of alternative seafood products, emulating the flavour profile of fish in seafood
alternatives is challenging. In the proposed work the intern will gain experience conducting experiments using
instrumental and sensory analysis to determine the compounds that contribute to the flavour profile of salmon and
seafood alternative products. The student will also investigate the role of lipids in the development of flavour
profiles by testing salmon samples that have been defatted and comparing the volatile profiles to untreated
samples as well as those from low-fat fish such as haddock. Opportunities will also be provided for networking
with academic and food industry collaborators.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) Impact on Labour Market and Independent Retail Gasoline Dealers and Auto Service & Repair Industry

This research project involves the evaluation of scholarly journal articles, a series of interviews to anticipate the impending effects that electric vehicles will have on the Nova Scotian automobile sector. This project is in partnership with the Automotive Sector Council of Nova Scotia, a non-profit organization, to provide usable data for long term planning and adaptation of the sub-markets to service electric vehicles. This research will focus on highlighting effects to oil/gas companies, repair service companies and part suppliers. ASC will benefit from having greater awareness of the current market landscape and its expected evolution, this will better enable judgments on development of infrastructure and planning. Hudson will be handling the review of articles to source information, from this information he will work alongside the ASC contact to create a series of interview questions which will later be posed to 15 interview participants. The project will result in a presentation for the ASC team to share with the sector and academic journal publication by the researchers.
