Full-filling the promise of sablefish genomics: Parentage Analyses, Whole Genome Sequencing, and Genome Prediction

The goal of the partnership is to develop genomic tools to enhance BC’s new sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) aquaculture industry. Specifically, we will expand the parentage analysis project launched in 2019, produce a new genetic test that we can use to determine the sex (male vs female) of each fish, and use whole genome sequencing to identify sets of genes, that is, ‘genetic signatures’, associated with differences in fish growth rate and morphology. These genetic tools will allow us to identify males and females that when crossed, produce offspring with i) improved chances of survival in the aquaculture setting, ii) higher growth rates, and iii) better health. This research will ultimately help us develop a domesticated sablefish. The project is a collaboration between researchers at UVic, Golden Eagle Sablefish (GES), and the KA:’YU:’K’T’H’ and CHE:K:TLES7ET’H’ First Nations.

Sintonia Studio – Sai Jonnalagadda

This project is a research investigation of the effectiveness of employing holistic, non-medical methods, and particularly “Deep Listening” and musical exercises,  on the reversal of sensorineural hearing loss, for the purposes of developing a therapeutic hearing rejuvenation program.
An estimated 12 million Canadians suffer from hearing loss, and over 360 million people world-wide. Hearing loss costs to the Canadian economy can amount to tens of billions of dollars each year. The overwhelmingly most common treatment for hearing loss is hearing aid technology, and secondarily cochlear implants, but at a significant and sometimes prohibitive cost, while not always adequately restoring hearing. While some recent and limited research suggests that musical training and lifestyle changes have a positive impact on hearing loss, holistic and natural methods have been understudied by the medical and scientific communities. Furthermore, new methods that hone hearing and listening, such as the “Deep Listening” practice developed by composer Pauline Oliveros and administered by the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer, have not been studied in the context of affecting hearing loss.
The main goal of Sintonia Studio is to conduct market research to understand the market landscape of existing solutions for hearing loss, identify gaps and potential market opportunity for a holistic, non-medical solution for hearing loss. The market research data will help inform and develop an initial business strategy for Sintonia Studio.

Extraction of energy and value-added products from municipal wastewater.

I n effort to reduce the environmental footprint and improve the sustainability of wastewatertreatment plants, this study is focused on the production of energy and the recovery of valueadded products from municipal wastewater via the chemical precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate (struvite). The method employs the controlled addition of a suitable magnesium compound such as magnesium oxide to wastewater at moderate to high pH
values in order to promote the formation and precipitation of struvite. The extracted struvite may be directly used as a fertilizer or heated to release the ammonia for on-site use and storage. The remaining crystalline may be recycled within the same process for additional recovery of ammonia from wastewater.
The aim of the project is to develop and experimentally validate an analytical model to predict the nucleation and precipitation of struvite in wastewater. Unlike other wastewater treatment technologies, this promising method is distinguished by the prospects of selling the struvite in fertilizer market for revenue generation as well as the possibility of utilizing the extracted ammonia as fuel in combined heat and power (CHP) application.

Using Social Network Analysis in Marketing

Customers usually get confused buying an item online. Therefore, they consult with their friends, use their past experience, and survey reviews from other customers. Some of the main findings from a survey conducted by eMarketer, in which each participant could choose multiple answers are as follows: a friend’s recommendation (76%), previous experiences you had with this company (68%), a recommendation in a newspaper/magazine (22%), advertisements (15%), and the company’s website (8%) [1].
The survey indicates that a significant proportion of customers trust their “friendship” network before deciding on a particular purchase. This communication between friends is mostly done via some form of social networks.
Thus, analyzing social networks to discover and utilize useful “patterns” from the data can yield effective marketing tactics which can save companies millions of dollars for marketing.
This project first recognizes relevant social networks within the potential customer base, and then it detects tightly bound cohesive subgraphs representing local “friendship” of “important” actors. Finally, we need to identify important community members using “ranking,” where the highly ranked individuals are likely the first to make purchasing decisions.

Towards Sustainable Pharmaceutical Research and Development: A Life Cycle Approach

significant environmental impacts associated with pharmaceutical processes. In pharmaceutical industries, amount of waste generated to the amount of product is several times higher compared to oil refining and bulk chemical industries. This is due to complexity of API production and purification. Therefore, these industries strive toward innovative products and technologies to reduce the amount of generated waste and mitigate its subsequent adverse environmental and health impacts. In pharmaceutical industries, crystallization is often used for isolation and purification of solid APIs. Several crystallization techniques are commonly implemented for purification of APIs at commercial scale, most of which involve the use of variety of organic solvents, resulting in generating significant amount of waste.
The objective of this project is to perform environmental impact and cost analysis for the most common crystallization processes implemented in pharmaceutical industries. The potential of solvent recycling as an alternative to waste incineration to reduce the environmental impact and their associated costs will be investigated.
Our goal is to develop a framework, which provide comparative assessment of environmental impact and cost of various crystallization technologies in pharmaceutical industries and inform designing more sustainable processes.

Create digital twins of local sites of interest and other locations

FluidPlanet.org is a non-profit organization that builds and runs gaming-based interactive digital twins (virtual versions of real places) with other non-profit organizations (e.g., universities, communities, etc.) to support the understanding and study of public environments. In this project, FluidPlanet.org will work with the University of Lethbridge and the University of Calgary to develop digital twins of parks in Alberta and other areas to create accessible educational experiences for learning about the parks and their history in an engaging and entertaining way, as well as to facilitate environmental research. Five university interns will participate in this project, each with special expertise, namely game development, cloud deployment, subject matter research, game design and testing. The interns will work collaboratively with each other as well as with faculty and industry veterans from relevant technology backgrounds and gain experience with the latest technologies from various fields. This gives students valuable exposure to both the tools and people who work on these types of problems commercially. Another expected benefit of this project will be to establish a repeatable process that can be shared across universities as a potential best practice. For example, once this project is successfully completed, it will be a model to follow for similar projects at other universities that focus on the regions and sites of interest around them.
