Characterization of Simple In Vivo Models of Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT) Disease

Modelis is a drug discovery platform company focused solely on rare, genetic diseases. Our unique approach combines genetically-engineered worms which are ‘avatars’ of human patients, with high-throughput drug screening. This results in a dramatically accelerated drug discovery process. Our platform is perfectly suited for genes that are evolutionarily and functionally conserved such as FIG4, and the related disorder Charcot-Marie-Tooth 4J (CMT4J). This project will focus on engineering and phenotyping worm ‘avatars’ for high-throughput drug screening and performing the drug screens in worms. The best candidate hits will further enter a preclinical pipeline using patients’ cells.

Circular Design with Local Marginalized Sewing Collective

The intern is undertaking a research project on sustainability in the textile industry, and how to make the process not linear, but rather circular, so we can consider what happens to clothing at the end of its life. This research will be useful and beneficial for the partner organization, as the organization has a social enterprise consisting of a group of women who sew as a form of income generation. This livelihood program is now seeking to expand its offering to include sustainability and will benefit from the knowledge produced in this research project. This research will also make their product offering to be unique and be competitive in the textile market, thus making their social enterprise an even more effective tool as a poverty reduction strategy.

Product development for academic and pre-clinical research electrodes

Neuraura Biotech Inc., (“Neuraura”) is a seed stage Calgary-based company focused on the field of neuroscience / neurotech, formed as a spin-out of the University of Calgary in 2017. Neuraura is commercializing its technology for a range of research and clinical applications. This project will build on initial pilot projects with contract research organizations and academic partners to build out a range of research electrodes for use in academic and preclinical research. The Intern will leverage Neuraura’s proprietary electrode technology to design, build and test a range of designs, working in collaboration with other team members, potential customers and suppliers.

Going Beyond Backlash: Mitigating Resistance to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives

Some may think that it is only members of underrepresented and marginalized groups who experience identity threat in an organization. However, members of traditionally well-represented groups can feel threatened by diversity, equity, and justice (DEI) initiatives, and this can result to backlash which could derail those efforts. Through a collaboration with Feminuity, a consulting firm dedicated to helping organizations with diversity, inclusion and equity, this project will examine how the identity threats of dominant-identity group members can be transformed from roadblocks to challenges that can also trigger learning and growth as they force us to go beyond who we think we are. As Canadian organizations increasingly implement DEI initiatives, this project will assist policy makers and organizations such as Feminuity who are interested in improving support for these initiatives to better understand how to transform resistance into support.

Optimisation du transport de messagerie-colis

Le projet vise a ameliorer la gestion actuelle du transport de messagerie-colis au CHUM. Actuellement, il y a une gestion decentralisee de la gestion de messagerie-colis et chaque departement et centre de recherche utilise un transporteur selon ses criteres. Cela s’avere tres couteux pour l’institution hospitaliere parce qu’en plus de ne pas profiter des economies d’echelle d’une gestion centralisee; ils ont un service de transport de messagerie-colis qui dessert les trois sites du CHUM. Pour proposer des ameliorations au systeme actuel, il faut dans un premier temps collecter l’information pertinente aupres des fournisseurs et utilisateurs pour l’analyser et ainsi proposer quatre axes generaux d’ameliorations : -caracteriser et regrouper les besoins des utilisateurs pour une possible rationalisation des fournisseurs -analyser les avantages/inconveniants de rapatrier une partie de ces services offerts par les fournisseurs -analyser les parametres a modifier pour accueillir plus de demandes -optimiser les tournees de vehicules du CHUM pour une maximisation des ressources.

Advance Airspace Usability

The airspace will rapidly change in the next 15 years with increased automation of air traffic control, flight path tracking with strong time constraints and big data exchange between the aircraft and ground control for communication. However, little information is available to understand the impact of this transformation on the pilot’s tasks and how to design the flight deck to reduce the risk of human error due to information overload. This project will design and validate, through pilot usability tests, innovative avionics solutions for presentation of information, human-machine interaction, automation and decision support for the topics of trajectory-based operations, information exchange and airport surface navigation i.e., taxiing. The results of this project will be used to define new flight deck and avionics functionalities required to facilitate pilot integration with future airspace requirements and ensure safe operations. Outcomes of this project will provide the needed guidance to Canadian aircraft and avionics manufacturers to address the airspace development roadmap from the pilot’s perspective. It will place Canadian airspace users at the forefront of the digital transformation in the flight deck to take advantage of the
“best equipped, best served” rule to benefit from preferred routing, fuel reduction and environmental benefits.

Software development for beam-type structures’ reliability analysis

Reliability analysis of structures is crucial to ensure efficient operations in industrial assets. Nowadays, industries benefit from condition monitoring (CM) equipment to evaluate their products’ health. Current commercial reliability software can not accurately analyze the reliability of structures under time-varying conditions. The intern has previously developed an algorithm for accurate reliability analysis of different structures. We have also validated that algorithm for bearings under time-varying working conditions. However, we need more validation tests to commercialize our algorithm. In this project, first, we will validate our existing algorithm, and then we develop a user-friendly graphical interface for our algorithm along with a users’ manual, which will be a huge step forward towards bringing our algorithm from Lab to market. Taking part in the Lab2Market program and participating in Mitacs Accelerate will foster the growth of innovative technologies within the Canadian economy as well.

Radiofluorination of Epidermal Growth Factor-Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Anti-Cancer Drugs

Cancer is a disease that involves the uncontrolled division of cells in the body. Cancer begins when the cells disobey normal cell
division and cell death processes and is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide. There is a type of cancer that is
caused by a mutation in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). This is a protein that sends a growth signals when
activated by a different protein binding to it. Cancer is caused by constant sending of growth signals which causes the
uncontrolled growth in the cells. The group of drugs that target this protein blocks the protein from being constantly activated to
stop the cancer from growing. These anti-cancer drugs can be made radioactive by attaching a radioactive fluorine and used in
positron emission tomography imaging. When the drug is radioactive and injected into a patient, where the drug is concentrated
can be seen. This can be used to determine if a drug will work on treating a patient’s cancer before having to undergo difficult and
unnecessary treatment.

Les potagers dans une ville en région nordique et minière (Rouyn-Noranda) : évaluation des risques, des pratiques et des avantages

Ce projet vise à évaluer la présence des potagers dans une ville en région nordique et dans un contexte minier. L’objectif est de déterminer, en collaboration avec des citoyens et citoyennes la productivité de leur potager, les niveaux de contamination dans les sols et dans les légumes, afin d’évaluer le niveau du risque sanitaire à la consommation des légumes produits par ceux-ci.
Dans le cadre du projet seront amené à peser leur production alimentaire et fournir une description de leurs pratiques agricoles et environnementales au potager. Les chercheurs vont prélever du sol et des légumes (tomates, carottes et salade) afin d’évaluer les contaminants présents.
Ce projet collaboratif entre citoyens et citoyennes, groupes communautaires et chercheurs permettront d’établir les risques sanitaires des potagers et de rédiger un guide des bonnes pratiques pour la culture de légumes dans une ville en contexte nordique et minier.
