Simulation of sand separation in water-oil emulsions using OpenFOAM

A new computational model will be developed that allows the industrial partner to design more efficient sand separation devices for the oil and gas industry. The computer model will be developed within an open source software, which means that, in addition to benefiting the industrial partner directly, it will also contribute to the increased accuracy in the modelling of emulsions in many other industries. As a result of the project, the intern will receive advanced training in both numerical model development and in setup and running of validation experiments.

Club – Ideo

[Business Strategy Internship] Designing Business Model and Revenue Strategy- ON-429

The current business model is based on charging individual users a monthly subscription fee (primary), as well as upselling add-ons mostly for “access to experts” in various forms. Companies who sponsor projects on the platform pay a one time fee for posting their project which includes the prize money for the winning teams. One of the objectives of this project for the next few months is to design, validate, and implement a recurring revenue business model for the enterprise facing offering. Given the one time nature of the interaction with companies in the current setting, the cost of acquisition is very high which is not ideal for scale. There are some initial ideas about where this could go, Janet will help the organization carry out the research rigorously, and establish a business strategy that can scale.

Biochar Carbon Protocol Development

Biochar is charcoal that is used as a soil amendment to increase plant productivity and as a means of keeping carbon out of the atmosphere. Although a number of voluntary carbon standards allow for soil carbon projects to generate carbon offsets, no protocol has been developed for biochar. The overall objective of this research project is to develop a protocol for quantifying the greenhouse gas emission reductions from the production and incorporation into soil of biochar in agricultural and forest management systems that can be adopted by an internationally applicable carbon offset standard. The secondary objective will be to apply this methodology to the Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve (HFWR) context that is currently developing biochar on an experimental scale. Ultimately, the goal is to enable HFWR and other companies doing similar things to sell carbon offsets for the production and use of biochar within the forestry sector.

CubeHX

As a Startup, with a new business model due to covid, this project will allow us to understand how to tackle the growth opportunity with our new SaaS platform CubeGO. CubeGO will need to find customers through online acquisition. Prior to covid, we were an “in-lab” consulting company. Now with Covid, the importance of online marketing is essential. Our product is now global and the ability to reach, impact and engage consumers on a global scale, through online channels is imperative.
We believe CubeGO is a market-leader for online user testing. As such, we believe for Canada, CubeGO represents the innovation abilities of Canadian companies in the market research space.

Immersive Virtual Environment for Dental Restorative Techniques

Dentists and dental assistants are required to complete continuing education. Blue Light’s first technology introduced in 2010 was a patient simulator used for teaching hands-on light curing skills. This technology incorporates a mannequin head, expensive electronics and required an in-person course which is less desirable in the current covid-19 landscape. Exploring other mediums to deliver required educational training will be important over the next foreseeable future. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are two such immerging mediums and could be delivered directly to the user mitigating the need to travel. Since the hands-on aspect is important for developing dental skills, AR represents a step into the future of dentistry. This platform may be utilizing for didactic training and professional training at different levels of expertise transforming the practice of dentistry as we know it.

Developing high strength aluminum-based fillers for aluminum welding

The global aluminum welding market is ever increasing due to the growing demand for Al-based products in transportation as well as in construction industries. 6xxx series aluminum alloys are extensively used in automotive industry, and they are mostly required to be joined by welding process. The present study aims to develop the next generation of aluminum-based weld fillers, to provide consistent high strength weldments. The principal objectives are to adjust various Mg and Mn contents in the base filler metal, and join 6xxx plates by means of gas metal arc welding technique, and then evaluate the weldability, performance and mechanical properties of the weldments. Canadian aluminum producers are on a constant quest to develop innovative transformation processes and value added products to ensure a sustainable competitive advantage. This research project, tailored to the transformation priorities and value added products, will help creating novel weld fillers in the market.

Development of a warehouse slotting model to improve picking performance

Asmodee Canada Inc. is a French publisher of board games, role-playing games and card games with one of its warehouses located in Quebec. The warehouse has two segregated sections to fulfil orders of B2B (business to business) and B2C (business to customer). Order fulfilment operations involve manual picking of orders. The project aims to maximize the number of orders fulfilled daily by reducing picking time in B2B section of the warehouse. Some of the challenges in the project are:
a.) As some aisles are narrow, they lead to congestion when several pickers are picking.
b.) As the board game industry has constant changes in products, there are storage changes needed based on sales, therefore they need to be relocated periodically.
The goal is to organize all the items in the warehouse to reduce the time a picker takes to complete the order picking.
The partner organization will benefit from the study in terms of better slotting of its SKUs and, hence, an improved order processing on a daily basis.

Optimization add-on to MarcotteDispatch

MarcotteDispatch is a software for concrete truck delivery. Dispatchers use this software to plan, schedule their deliveries and follow the truck status in real-time. However, all decisions regarding the scheduling are based on dispatchers’ expertise, which is not optimal from an optimization standpoint. The problem of concrete truck delivery has been studied in the past. Still, to the best of our knowledge, no practical optimization and decision support tool has been implemented to “automate” the trucks scheduling/dispatching with multiple dynamic objectives. Thus, the proposed research project will develop an optimization add-on to the MarcotteDispatch platform to optimize concrete delivery operations and be a practical decision support tool to dispatchers. The add-on will help to reduce operating costs as well as gas emissions.

A Meta-Analysis of Workplace Wellness Programs and the Impact of Sun Life Financial’s HealthyRETURNS Health & Wellness program on Employee Health, Productivity and Organizational Costs

A recent meta-analysis of wellness program research literature, phase 1 of the project described in this proposal, suggests that wellness programs reduce absenteeism, resulting in an average savings of $251 per employee per year. These results are similar to those of a team from Harvard University, whose findings suggest a return on investment (ROI) of $3.27 for every dollar invested in wellness programs. Thus, programs which generate strong employee health outcomes may also generate substantial savings for the employer, thereby supporting a business case for workplace wellness strategies. Both studies also concluded, however, that existing evidence is relatively weak, particularly outside of the U.S., and further exploration of the mechanisms at work is needed before making claims about broader applicability.
