The kinematics and chemistry of Au-bearing quartz veins, Ruby Creek, British Columbia

The area around Atlin, northern BC, contains high concentrations of gold in river gravels. This gold came from gold-bearing quartz veins, which were eroded by the rivers. Different researchers have proposed that the gold in these quartz veins is sourced from mantle rocks, or two different granites nearby. The recent discovery of gold-bearing quartz veins in drill-core in one of these granites offers new insights into their formation. This proposal aims to characterize these veins and relate them to the tectonics and other mineral occurences in the area using their chemistry, geometry and physical properties. Knowing the source of gold is crucial for the exploration industry working in the area because they rely on robust geological models to inform their exploration strategy.

Le projet contribuera à l’actualisation du positionnement de l’analyse féministe intersectionnelle de Relais-femmes en travaillant à articuler les liens entre féminisme intersectionnel, écologie, économie et santé. Pour ce faire des objectifs spécifiques ont été ciblés : 1) mettre à jour la documentation scientifique sur les thématiques ciblées; 2) analyser les productions antérieures de Relais-femmes portant sur les questions économiques; 3) développer des indicateurs visant à orienter la prise de décision en politique économique destinés aux membres de Relais-Femmes.

Modelling Canola Growth, Development and Yield in Western Canada

Crop models such as the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator integrate multiple disciplines such as plant science, soil science and meteorology to understand crop growth, development, and yields under various production systems. Currently, there are no canola crop models employed in western Canada that can assist growers in simulating the impact extreme weather events may have on canola growth and yields. The objectives of the project are to calibrate and validate APSIM as a canola model in western Canada to evaluate the impact extreme weather events have on canola growth and yield. The results of this study will provide Nutrien Ag Solutions validation of their data sets to evaluate canola varieties under varying farm management systems.

The Binary Fluid Ejector- a novel thermal-driven heat pump for low-energy distillation:Influence of binary fluid thermodynamic properties

Currently, two common technologies that use thermal energy directly to produce cooling are being used in the industry – absorption chillers and steam ejectors. Both are traditional technologies that suffer from serious limitations. MRT is developing a novel Binary Fluid Ejector that can overcome the limitations of prior art to produce a heat pump that can economically harness renewable thermal energy, including waste heat, to do useful work such as air conditioning, process chilling, or distillation/desalination. MRT is constructing & testing a demonstration distillation system of a prototype applicable for treatment of waste and process water currently generated by oil sand mining and SAGD operations. The specific research to be performed by the candidate is to conduct modeling work necessary to design and optimize the precursor ejector prototypes required for concept validation prior to comprehensive design and construction of the demonstration system.

Distributed AI for Mobile Ad Hoc Clouds

The unprecedented expansion of Cloud Computing, Internet of things and the recent advances in AI and Big Data analytics techniques are opening the door for new breeds of intelligent services and applications. However, such services and applications require a large computing capacity. Unfortunately, in dynamic environments, characterized by highly mobile devices and intermittent connectivity, it becomes challenging to run such services and applications with a guaranteed performance, especially when it is not possible to rely on any fixed infrastructure giving access to cloud platforms with powerful servers. This project aims at addressing this challenge by designing novel architectures and management mechanisms for Mobile Ad hoc Cloud (MAdoC), a dynamic cloud made of interconnected IoT devices with no dependence on a fixed infrastructure. A high-performance and resilient software-defined heterogeneous MAdoC will be proposed, it leverages recent technological advances in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Big Data analytics, and Machine-Learning techniques.

Programmable light for microscopy

Computational optics is the integration of algorithms to enhance optical imaging and exceed its physical limitations. The principles of computational optics can be used in microscopy by implementing programmable illumination to control the application of light onto tissue. MTT Innovation Inc.’s Light Steering Projection technology uses laser illumination, spatial phase modulation, and image processing algorithms to direct light from dark regions to brighter regions that require more light. This improves the dynamic range and contrast levels of resulting images. This research project will investigate the integration of programmable illumination into various imaging modalities commonly used in microscopy, including bright-field, dark-field, and phase contrast imaging. This project will also explore the feasibility of computational microscopy in monitoring the blood flow within the microcirculatory vessels of critically ill patients. By looking at these vessels, clinicians can tell how much oxygen organs in the body are receiving, which can aid in patient assessment.

Purification du graphite naturel pour son application dans les piles lithium ion (partie 2)

Le graphite naturel est un ingrédient essentiel pour la fabrication des piles Li-ion. Une pureté supérieure à 99,95 % est fortement souhaitée afin d’assurer l’efficacité à long terme des piles. Le graphite extrait des sites miniers contient des impuretés qui doivent être retirées avant de pouvoir être utilisé. Cependant, les techniques de purification actuelles nécessitent l’utilisation d’acide concentrée ou de température très élevée. Le but de ce projet est d’optimiser les conditions de purification du graphite naturel afin d’atteindre les niveaux de pureté exigés tout en respectant les objectifs de protection de l’environnement, d’efficacité énergétique et de développement durable. Les travaux effectués permettront à Nouveau Monde Graphite de mettre en place un procédé économiquement concurrentiel et respectant les plus hauts standards de qualité.

Toward a more Accessible Canada: Benchmarking and Analyzing Accessibility in Canadian Municipalities

The project aims to collect accessibility data in rural municipalities in six town across Canada. These six municipalities include Salmon Arm and Golden, BC., Sylvan and Banff AB., and Rosetown and Maple Creek, SK. The accessibility data will look at a variety of different features that will deem a public business (hotels, restaurants, public services, etc.) either accessible, partially accessible, or not accessible. This will benefit the Canadian community by having open access (public) data that will allow people to see where accessible businesses are in their communities or when they are traveling in Canada. This will also benefit AccessNow by adding to their app and giving them reliable data that might be hard to collect being that they are located in Ontario and our data will be coming from BC, AB and SK.

DC Bus Capacitor Condition Monitoring for Low Voltage and Medium Voltage Power Cells

The goal of the project is to develop, implement, and validate novel condition monitoring algorithms that can detect the onset of a failure through changes in behavior of the DC bus capacitors in motor drives with no additional sensors. Toronto Arts Council Partnership for Research on Funding of Equity Seeking Artists in Toronto

Toronto Arts Foundation (TAF) and the Diversity Institute are partnering to analyze arts funding outcomes for Persons of Colour, Indigenous Persons, Deaf Persons, Persons with Disabilities and Persons Living with Mental Illness, as well as 2SLGBTQAP Persons in Toronto. This project will identify barriers faced by these marginalized groups when applying for arts funding in Toronto from five major funders including TAF’s sister organization, Toronto Arts Council. A final report will provide an evaluation of TAC’s ability to adequately fund artists, arts organizations, and artistic communities from these groups in relation to other major funders in the city.
Using a Gender- and Diversity-Based Analysis (GBA+), the project will analyze both qualitative and quantitative data on funding success rates and gaps that exist within the city’s arts sector. The purpose of a GBA+ strategy is to improve an organization’s capacity to better measure and improve their processes for enhancing gender equity and inclusion of marginalized groups.

Industry & University Partnership in Developing Highly Qualified People to Address the Human Resources Challenge of the Global Mining Industry

There is a global human resources shortage in the mining industry due to a number of factors including demographics affecting supply and projected production growth affecting demand. Companies are struggling to develop and retain Highly Qualified People (HQP) who are essential to the successful operation of their business. HQP have an invaluable combination of technical postsecondary education and lengthy industry experience which takes many years to achieve. In my seven years working at the UBC Engineering Co-op Program I’ve developed relationships with hundreds of people related to the mining industry such as students, faculty, staff at other universities in Canada, senior engineers, and human resources. I plan to collect data through surveying mining alumni from schools across Canada and interview industry experts to support my hypothesis on the impact that university and industry partnership can have on addressing some of the greatest human resources challenges of the mining industry.
