Population study of First Nations Communities and the Quebec population to determine HLA frequencies and common and rare haplotypes

The determination of HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) is of crucial importance for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The wide variability of the HLA system has some progressive advantages, but can make the search for compatible donors more complex for specific populations. While populations in the regions of Quebec were characterized several years ago for the HLA system, First Nations communities were not included in this study. Lack of HLA characterization of these communities may have important clinical implications, in access to care (e.g., stem cell transplantation), but is also of interest at the anthropological level (understanding the evolutionary differences of the First Nations of Quebec).
This project will aim to estimate the differences in allele frequencies across communities. In addition to comparing HLA frequencies within First Nations communities, we will also compare those to frequencies observed in the Quebec population, as well as nationally and worldwide. This work is expected to enhance our appreciation of complexity and specificity of HLA data of the diverse population of Quebec.

Pulsating Airlift Pumps for Vertical Farming Applications

The need for food (26.6% increase since the year 2000 according to Statistics Canada 2016) and the cost of energy are increasing rapidly as the world population continues to grow exponentially. Moreover, world-wide demand for fresh water is rapidly increasing while supply is very limited. Agriculture uses 70% of the global fresh water supply as compared to hydroponics that only use 10%. However, these systems require large amounts of energy to operate. Reducing energy cost and improving productivity is critical for the sector to expand. In this project, the new airlift pumping technology developed by FloNergia will be evaluated. This pumping technology operates by air with no moving parts, no lubrication required, no noise or vibration involved and require 50-70% less energy. It improves water quality by circulating water and aerating simultaneously which improves productivity by 10%.

Business Strategy Internship – ECAH

The current pandemic has been a tough time for everyone, but especially for people who are in deep need of care. ECAH promises to verify each care professional that joins the ECAH ecosystem, providing the care recipients with ease of mind in the fact that they are hiring a verified professional. The rating system also gives the care recipients the ability to provide feedback to the care takers, while informing the local community of their personal experience. For care professionals, this is an opportunity to gain financial stability while providing a helping hand within their local community. In the current economic environment, it has become tough for PSW to visit home of the people in need of care. In addition, homeowners have a tough time trusting a stranger to enter their home and take care of their loved one. ECAH provides the flexibility to these concerned individuals while taking on the liability upon themselves.
My personal contribution will be to listen to the voice of these customers and understand their true concern.

Service Delivery Model proposal for non-traditional Healthcare

The overall goal of the proposed project is to help SSW determine the best service model for supporting non-traditional organizations and minimizing the impact of supply disruption on Ontario’s healthcare system. While these non-traditional customers have historically managed their own supply chain services, the vast disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has left them vulnerable to supply shortages and, in some cases, unable to procure the necessary products to re-open.This body of work is extremely significant to SSW for a number of reasons. Firstly, having a clearer understanding of the best service model will enable SSW to provide more value to the entire healthcare system (i.e. from hospitals to home care to community care) and minimize the impacts of COVID-related supply disruptions on patient care. Secondly, completion of this project is urgent for SSW as these non-traditional customers typically do not have a robust supply chain strategy and are in immediate need of supplies. Additionally, SSW has continuously made it a priority to adapt its service model for greater value and set itself apart in the industry, to which this project would significantly contribute.

Promera Inc. – Community Builder

We are looking for the intern to help redesign our marketing strategy focused on building brand awareness through outreach to the patient and healthcare provider communities. We foresee this strategy encompassing identifying the various channels that can be used for marketing innerme, how those channels should be used (e.g., messaging), and the respective key performance indicators that can be measured to determine the effectiveness of the channel/message fit. This strategy should cover a short- to medium-term timeline (approximately 18 months) – the minimum length of time we foresee our original marketing plan being displaced by the Covid-19 pandemic – and include a budget. Promera is faced with the challenge of launching its platform in an environment where face-to-face meetings are limited. Traditionally, this has been one of the most effective ways to market to the healthcare sector. The intern will provide Promera with a national marketing strategy that can be executed while Covid-19-related restrictions are in-place (e.g., reduced travel, restrictions on medical clinic access, and cancelled conferences).

Natural and Anthropogenic factors affecting the Nechako river watershed

Prince George Pulp and Intercontinental Pulp Company (both part of Canfor) are located in Prince George, the geographic centre of BC. The process of making Kraft pulp requires access to a considerable volume of water, which is why most pulp mills are located close to major rivers. Canfor Pulp clearly recognizes their dependence on the Nechako watershed and the role that Canfor must play in water management and stewardship. In order to manage this water resource effectively, we must understand the ways in which we use water now, as well as what our water needs will be in the future. Canfor is willing to gain knowledge about this watershed, and understand how climate change affects on this watershed as well knowledge if other sectors (e.g. agriculture or mining) affect on this watershed.

Placeholder Canada Inc. – Operations Analyst (1)

As mentioned above, we are in the process of pivoting (or expanding) our business into flexible Warehouses in addition to our core Office vertical. We will continue to pursue both verticals, but Warehouses are our primary focus until the end of 2020 (at least). As the demand for new office space slowly comes back, and in whatever form people are comfortable with, the flexibility of our product makes us well-positioned to take advantage of this “new normal.” An intern will help us understand both markets and how we can be best positioned to address their needs. An intern will help us analyze our organization in the context of a post-COVID world and what the next phase of the global commercial real estate market will be. An intern will help us answer questions such as: 1) What does the demand for office space look like post-COVID? 2) How much of the increased demand for flexible Warehouse space we’re seeing right now is COVID-related versus business as usual? 3) Going forward, how should we allocate our time between our Office and Warehouse verticals?
