It is forecast that by 2023, Canada will be facing a critical shortage of pilots. If the launch of Delphi technology’s MVP is successful, it is predicted that the project will significantly aid Canada in this critical shortage. The main challenge with this project is raising the desired amount of awareness for the brand, given the strict timelines of the launch. Delphi’s launch of the campaign must be executed carefully. If the campaign is executed successfully, Delphi will be able to address the predicted shortage of pilots in Canada.

iSpace – Bringing asset heavy sectors into the future – Industry 4.0

The pandemic has forced companies in asset heavy sectors to work on wafer thin margins. This is especially true for oil and gas sector which was plagued by a huge drop in oil prices between March-August 2020. This has directly impacted their spending on R&D and other overheads. Algo8 brings into play ace class engineering techniques, merged with deep learning to deploy advanced pre-built and customised Artificial Intelligence tools. Their mission is to transform and organise the
industrial value chain and processes using artificial intelligence. They have served over 30 customers and multiple Fortune 500 companies in sectors like Oil & Gas, Metals and FMCG. To optimise the utilisation of resources by humans, they have developed an enterprise AI product suite called iSpace. The objective of the project is to find the correct product market fit for the predictive maintenance and visual analytics modules in Canada. This will also include understanding the role of artificial intelligence in the post pandemic world, especially in asset heavy sectors. This project requires the understanding of both the market and the product, and I believe that Systems Design Engineering has given me the unique flexibility to explore topics outside traditional engineering disciplines.

Identifying Data Analytics Capability for Canadian Community Pharmacy Error Reporting

Safe community pharmacy practice involves highly complex decision making in high-risk, high reliability situations (Zhao & Olivera, 2006). Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, regulatory safety initiatives for Canadian community pharmacies have been rapidly evolving throughout the last decade and now feature requirements for expanding pharmacy offerings, implementing on-line error reporting, assessing quality improvement analytics, and incorporating comprehensive safety enhancement practices (Mossialos et al., 2015). However, though safety measures such as mandatory Medication Incident (MI) reporting continue to be implemented across Canada, there has been no research conducted on the data collected through these processes. In partnership with Pharmapod Ltd, our research will utilize in-kind data collected from Community Pharmacies. This is the first time these data sets will be used in a research product and will facilitate the sharing of enhanced safety practices and data analytics methods more broadly across Canada, which will increase the capacity of all pharmacies to meet these evolving and escalating demands for patient safety. The proposed research will fund a student contribute to a ‘first of its kind’ analysis as a means to enhance the knowledge translation of the actionable learnings from the Pharmapod data.

GaN applications in high efficiency, high power density AC adapters

The ever-growing market of portable electronic devices (e.g., laptop computers, tablets, smartphones) has resulted in the penetration of AC adapters in households greater than ever. Accordingly, the portability of such devices entails substantial demands for light-weighted and compact devices. This necessitates the critical need for high power density and highly efficient adapters. In particular, consumers continuously expect to have a more compact adapter with higher efficiency. Besides, the current technology has reached mature stages. At this point, a new era of wide-bandgap semiconductors, specifically gallium nitride (GaN) based transistors, wins the competition to enhance the power density and efficiency exponentially. This is due to the superior GaN’s characteristics compared to former silicon transistors. Thus, this research aims to address the design and implementation of GaN transistors in high-power-density, high-efficiency converters for AC adaptor applications. This research will tremendously impact the industry as the GaN transistor applications are revolutionizing the world.

Efficient massive spatial data search with version control

In large scale earth observation systems, data is gathered in short duration surveys returning massive numbers of point data observations (often millions) covering significantly sized regions. To maintain
up-to-date products (e.g. navigation charts in harbours with continuous silt build-up), successive surveys are performed that often cover overlapping areas. Searches to find all the data in a specific region are expected to return only the most recent data in any given area, and must ignore any older, overlapping versions. In some cases, the data has errors that are difficult to correct; we would like to ignore or exclude this data during retrieval so that products derived from the data (e.g. contours on navigational charts) are accurate. This MITACS project investigates how to build a spatial data structure that efficiently supports this use case, termed “exclusion persistence range search”, over multiple versions of data covering the same area.

Design and Development of Next-Generation Electronic Pocket Notebook for Law Enforcement Agencies

Mobile Innovations Co-Notes Electronic Pocket Notebook (EPN) solution not only replaces pen and paper – it connects the officer and enables them to securely gather rich data securely using their mobile device. It allows users to include text, audio, video; statements, evidence, signatures and tickets as well as traditionally recorded notes. Everything is time-stamped, geo-tagged, uploaded, stored and shared.
With EPN’s bigger and better dataset for supervisors, other officers, crown and defense attorneys, new areas of research are required for: (1) user first UI/UX, (2) scalable Architecture, (3) Integration to a range of existing ERP systems, Blockchain for evidentiary use, and Machine learning for recognizing patterns and trends. This proposal addresses these topics and related areas of interest exclusively for mobile law enforcement in Canada and across the globe.

Community-Based Theatre of HIV Oral Histories

While we face a global pandemic with COVID-19, we look to our progress in HIV treatment and celebrate new medications that makes living with HIV/AIDS a reality for those with access. This was only a dream in the 1980s. However, HIV rates and HIV stigma remain high and stereotypes about who is susceptible to HIV still exist. In particular, women’s stories of living with HIV/AIDS have been largely ignored and overlooked. Through a community-based theatre project where women’s voices are brought to centre stage, we seek to amplify women’s voices and share their stories with the wider public. The performances and follow-up workshops will offer a unique setting for community members to come together and create new understandings of what it means to live with HIV in British Columbia.

Youth Engagement in Municipal Planning

How often do you see a teenager participating at a public meeting, town hall, or a city council session? Youth between the ages of 13 and 18 are underrepresented in the urban planning process. Many of them are not taught about the subject in high school while many urban planners find themselves ill-equipped to talk to a younger audience about their work. To effectively reach young people today, urban planners need to both adapt to new technologies and social media platforms and understand the nuances of different youth identities in society. This research project, supervised by Urban Minds, will explore successful examples from around the world to help urban planners engage with youth effectively. A toolkit will be created to help Urban Minds as an organization, as well as other urban planners, to bridge the gap between youth and decision-makers.

Star Salvager: A Remote Games User Research Toolkit for Small Teams

As Games User Research (GUR) becomes a mature and essential pillar of game development, the challenges of performing rigorous qualitative and quantitative research in small teams are exacerbated by the disruption caused by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Research methods such as heuristic evaluation, think-aloud usability testing, initial experience testing, playthrough observation, and post-launch data analysis are taught as industry-standard in GUR courses. And they yield important insights on game usability, balance, learnability, and accessibility. However, many of these GUR methods require resources, staff, and lab space beyond the reach of small game developers. Such teams may struggle to perform a useful spread of research activities due to limited timelines and funds, while ad hoc, casual playtests are more difficult to perform while working remotely.
The objective of this project is to create, test, and refine remote-friendly versions of three key GUR approaches: think-aloud usability testing, full playthrough observation, and game balance telemetry. Our research aims to assess the effectiveness of each method variant in yielding actionable insights, and to document the challenges encountered when deploying them under a triforce of unfavourable conditions: a small team conducting remote research with significant time and budgetary constraints.

An innovative antimicrobial packaging to control Campylobacter jejuni in raw poultry meat

Campylobacter bacteria are the leading cause of human gastrointestinal diseases globally and have been frequently identified from raw poultry products. Campylobacter is prevalent in the entire poultry processing facility. Food packaging is one of the last steps in food processing to ensure that the food products are contained and delivered in the best condition. Selective metal oxide nanoparticles are regarded as safe and stable antimicrobials that can inactivate bacteria frequently identified in the agri-food systems. In this project, we will test the antimicrobial effect of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on Campylobacter bacteria and then incorporate these into packaging material to inactivate this microaerobic bacterium in raw chicken meat. Such a functionalized packaging material will be regarded as a novel intervention strategy to reduce poultry contamination by this microbe.

Data driven predictive control for geothermal heating-cooling system with standing column well

Geothermal energy is a promising source of renewable energy and is gradually gaining attention in application in building heating and cooling system. Standing column wells (SCW) are an efficient way of harnessing geothermal energy for such building applications. However, currently rule-based controllers are used for these geothermal heating-cooling systems with simplifying assumptions to avoid the inherent complexities of the system dynamics. This leaves room for implementing sophisticated yet easy-to-implement control methods which can significantly improve the overall performance of the SCW based geothermal systems. The goal of this project is to design an advanced controller using available measurement data from the existing SCW based geothermal units to achieve improved energy efficiency.

Characterization and behavioural studies on Psilocybe mushrooms and related psychotropic compounds

This MITACs proposal seeks funding to establish an internship cluster dedicated to researching novel psychedelic compounds for the purposes of treating clients suffering from PTSD and anxiety using its comprehensive psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy treatment model. The objective of this one-year project is to characterize the chemical composition of psychedelic mushrooms, optimizing extraction process, testing extracts and active compounds on insect model, in order to advance the science around the use of psilocybin in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. Specifically, intern will investigate how unique compounds present in specific mushroom strains work together to facilitate treatment.
