Ayrshire is an investment management firm focused principally on real estate investing in Alberta. We own retail, office and residential properties in multiple markets. Our portfolio is performing above expectations with respect to rent collection but Covid19 has materially slowed investment demand associated with new acquisition or developments. This is a cyclically opportunistic time to be investing in Alberta and we need an intern to help prepare a investment deck that thoroughly supports our thesis to invest in Alberta. This deck may be specific to some opportunities in our deal pipeline but will generally be focused on relative fundamentals important to real property markets. Even before Covid19 Alberta was viewed generally as a terrible place to invest. Covid19 exacerbated the negative sentiment and has made underwriting new opportunities very difficult. Our view is that the broader private capital “market” is mis-pricing this risk and that a foundation for strong returns can often be attractive pricing in contrarian circumstances. We are note pivoting our business away from real property but will be restore National investor confidence in Alberta with a thoughtfully prepared investment package.

Dynamic Mathematical Modeling for Control of Film Gauge for Tedlar® Film Casting

The objective of the proposed research project is to develop a mathematical model that can be used to predict, monitor and control the thickness profile of extruded Tedlar® film, particularly during product transitions and batch switches. Development of this model will require a detailed understanding of the extrusion and film casting process, as well as identification of key polymer and process parameters that influence film gauge. Existing and new process data from grade and batch changes will be collected and used to explore the influence of polymer properties and process conditions on dynamic changes in film thickness profiles. This data set will be used to make decisions about the types of phenomena that will be included in the mathematical model, to estimate model parameters and to validate model predictions.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease often characterized by the inflammation of the synovium and effusion of joints. RA is a chronic condition and may affect quality of life. Detection and characterization of the synovium and effusion in joints is most often assessed by a trained sonographer or radiologist. Recently ultrasound has been brought into the clinic and used by other trained healthcare professionals such as clinicians and physiotherapists. In order to assist in the acquisition of musculoskeletal ultrasound, the current proposal will examine the incorporation of artificial intelligence/ machine learning assisted guidance for scanning to allow for more accessible and standardized assessment.

Impacts of effluent release on phosphorus retention and nitrous oxide emissions in prairie wetlands

Wetlands are increasingly seen as a form of natural green infrastructure owing to the many ecosystem services they provide. Like many effluent receiving watersheds in Canada and around the world, the Frank Lake wetland in southern Alberta provides services that support diverse user groups (municipal, industrial, non-profit, recreational). Much like other watersheds, this system is faced with degradation of habitat and water quality, due to its long history of intensive land-use, and inputs of agro-industrial and municipal wastes. Here, our project will define how nutrient-rich effluent inputs to the Frank Lake Wetland complex impact two key ecosystem functions (sediment phosphorus retention; dissolved nitrogen removal through denitrification). The knowledge gained from this research will help the wetland managers (Ducks Unlimited Canada) to design management regimes that balance the needs of all user groups (government, industry, water stewardship groups, recreational users), while preserving the ecological values that flow from the site.

This project aims to develop a new deep learning algorithm based on various existing CNN-based algorithms, like SPPNet, Fast RCNN, Faster RCNN, YOLO, RetinaNet, CornerNet, etc. to detect the specific machine, forklift, in an image stream and classify the images by the type of forklift. Meanwhile, the company’s existing cloud environment and the speed requested by a real-time system must be considered. The project will resolve a couple of problems. For example, how to recognize a forklift if the significant component is blocked in natural images, how to identify the type of different forklift with similar features, how to make sure the model computes quickly enough to satisfy the request of a real-time system, and so on.

Developing secure platforms for sharing First Nations owned information

The development and advancement of web mapping technologies is opening the doors to new mapping platforms that are accessible, interactive and engaging. In a conservation and resource co-management setting, there is a large potential for these web mapping platforms to be used to empower local communities by supporting local monitoring, planning and management decisions. However, there remains a disconnect between these technological advances and their capacity to address community needs and promote meaningful co-management. One emerging method to develop community-driven web mapping platforms is Participatory GIS (PGIS), which focuses on context and users, rather than technology. This proposed study will investigate PGIS methods in the context of First Nations fisheries management in British Columbia. Viewing local ecological knowledge as a valuable community resource, this project will focus on the development of secure and empowering web mapping platforms in partnership with the First Nations Fisheries Legacy Fund and the First Nations Fisheries Council to address a need for improved sharing and coordination of fisheries data between communities.

Improved Phenotyping of Macrophages Using Cell Line Models, Gene Expression Signatures, and Protein Secretion Data

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a 3rd leading cause of death, which decreases lung function due to irreversible airway obstruction. Lung immune cells, such as macrophages, play an important role in the disease progression. However, researchers don’t fully understand their diversity and functions. Models of macrophages are useful to better understand patient macrophages. We will first obtain 3 types of model macrophages and compare their characteristics (such as gene expression and secreted proteins) with recently published COPD alveolar macrophage data from literature. Results from these experiments will determine whether these robust models could be used to better understand COPD alveolar macrophage phenotypes and functions.

Urban Transportation and 5G Connectivity

With the fifth-generation mobile communication system (5G), mobile operators need to explore new use cases and applications. These industries are potential users of 5G to fully exploit the new 5G capabilities in terms of its application. Vehicular communications and intelligent transportation systems are considered new use cases of 5G whose low-latency and ultra-reliability are required. This project presents an experimental evaluation of latency and reliability performance of 5G connectivity towards intelligent transportation systems. In this project, we introduce the 5G Thales prototype system. It is most distinctive that the prototype system is equipped with a V2V Direct communication radio interface and the traditional radio interfaces between BS and UE (i.e., downlink and uplink). Then, we present the evaluation results on over-the-air latency and reliability performance. The measurement campaign was carried out in Quebec City.
