Distributed Learning over Edge Computing to Support Covid-19 Modelling

The proposed research will allow any device to contribute its computing capabilities to the general distributed computer. Combined, these devices become a super-computer — providing resources for researchers and scientists in their quest for discovery. This research focuses on the finely calibrated aspects of scheduling slices of computing on this computing network. The intern will be involved in performing the raw science in the laboratory and then bringing those results to the non-academic partner for incorporation into the product’s commercialization. By improving on the distributed computer, this project allows KDS to create a critical mass of users who love, utilize, and promote the DCP as a leading-edge tool for parallel computing worldwide. This will include the distributed computer’s support of the extension of COVID-19 and future pandemic analysis platform.

Building the Evaluation Capacity of the Alberta Mentoring Partnership

This Mitacs project will support the Alberta Mentoring Partnership in building evaluation capacity across the province of Alberta for their affiliated organizations. The Mitacs intern will engage AMP decision makers in the development of the project, the creation and delivery of two online evaluation capacity workshops for mentoring organizations, the development and delivery of a 6-month learning opportunity for organizations, and knowledge mobilization about the project. This project provides the AMP partner organizations with the resources they need to monitor the impacts of their work, the effectiveness of their funding, and the achievement of their goals. By participating in this project, we will build their capacity to assess the impacts of their work on children, youth and families, collect evidence about the progress of their work, and provide evidence that can be used to refine the projects of AMP to better meet the needs of schools and youth serving agencies.

Handheld intraoral ultrasound for assessment of tooth-periodontium complex

Correction of misaligned teeth requires orthodontic braces treatment. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been routinely used in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning in recent years. Its three-dimensional capability to view images has a significant advantage over traditional 2D X-rays. However, CBCT typically delivers more radiation than conventional dental 2D X-rays. As children and adolescents are the most common individuals getting braces to correct misaligned teeth, they are increasingly susceptible to harmful effects of excessive radiation, due to rate of cellular growth and organ development, and longer life expectancies. This proposal suggests using ultrasound techniques to study tooth-gum tissue complex and validating the ultrasound results with CBCT. Ultrasound method is non-invasive, cost-effective, and free of ionizing radiation. If ultrasound is found to be a reliable tool in imaging the tooth-gum complex, children and adolescents will benefit immensely from the decreased radiation risks and reduced cancer rate. The project’s outcome will significantly advance the commercialization of DenSonics’ ultrasound technology.

Le projet présenté porte sur l’organisation du travail dans les services d’urgence et vise à faire ressortir les facteurs facilitant le déploiement du travail et le maintien au travail des paramédics lors d’une pandémie. Actuellement, les services ambulanciers d’urgence font face à des défis importants afin de s’assurer que la sécurité de la population de même que celle des employés soit toujours au premier plan lors des interventions. La démarche proposée dans ce projet s’inscrit dans un processus de gestion de risque qui vise à assurer la sécurité des paramédics et de la population dans le contexte lié à la COVID19 dans le respect des directives de l’INSPQ. Le projet vise à obtenir un portrait global de l’organisation du travail en temps de pandémie afin que la lecture de la trajectoire des soins et services offerts par les paramédics puisse être la plus performante possible pour les services à offrir à la population.

What are the factors influencing the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 among Canadians?

Beyond the devastating physical health crises, COVID-19 and its related social distancing measures has wreaked havoc on the economic-, mental-, and social-health of Canadians. The Association for Canadian Studies has been collecting behavioural, economic, and social data from Canadians weekly since March 9 and continues to do so. Our goal is to identify the socioeconomic factors that have had the most effect on the lives of Canadians. The expected benefits to the organizations, and to Canadians in general, is to have an ongoing, fact-based record of the social, economic and behavioural conditions of Canadians as they have experienced the COVID-19 virus and related social distancing measures.

Development of bead-based detection of SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG in a multiplex POCT platform

COVID-19 is a highly infectious respiratory disease that is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. RT-qPCR is a nucleic acid testing that is widely adapted to confirm the infection. Point-of-care IgM/IgG testing strips have been adopted in some countries for screening and surveillance. However, these antibody testing strips are restricted to a positive/negative testing result. Because COVID-19 infection is a dynamic process with variation of the levels of virus antigen and antibodies, a quantitative testing of IgM/IgG antibodies is valuable and it could significantly improve the accuracy of diagnosis. IgM/IgG testing may provide critical information to support the building of contact tracing infrastructures and accelerate the incremental reopening of economical and civil activities. This project focuses on developing a bead-based immunoassay system for the simultaneous and quantitative measurement of human IgM and IgG specific to SARS-CoV-2. The efficient implementation of this project will be the foundation for the future development of a universal multiplexed point-of-care diagnostic platform.

Contextual portrait detection

A frequently occurring problem in face verification in Jumio is that stock face detectors find multiple faces in the input image. The decision which one should be selected for the face verification step is not clear. Common reasons being, users submitting a single image with both selfie and document id. There can be other people, paintings, posters or television screens in the background.
Users may upload the selfie and the document picture in reverse order, etc. A human can easily select the right face but for an automated selection we need additional signals from the face detector – the context in which the face was detected. The goal of this project is to build a system using Artificial Intelligence that can provide additional context along with the detected faces in order to increase the efficiency of the existing face verification systems.

Assessment of grid-side energy storage systems for electric bus charging infrastructure

Electric buses have achieved first demonstration deployments in Canada. As bus fleet operators ramp up their implementation over the next 5-10 years, with many planning to fully convert their fleets to electric, charging capacity will become a challenge. This project will build up tools to examine the efficacy of energy storage located on the power grid side of the bus chargers to alleviate the high power requirements of the bus charges. This will help to mitigate technical challenges as well as costs associated with the charging the fleets.

Evaluating the Performance of Real-Time Collaboration on Mobile Devices

Real-time distributed groupware systems are becoming common, but real-time interaction is still poorly supported, particularly on mobile devices. The problem to be addressed in this project is that current mobile groupware systems do not provide adequate support for high speed tightly-coupled interaction. The two main activities will be to evaluate the capabilities of mobile devices for supporting different types of real-time interaction, and to adapt and test application-level networking techniques to improve this support in real-time groupware. The partner company will benefit from this research though improved understanding of the design principles for these systems, and results of performance tests that will help to improve development efforts for an on-going project.

Impact of oil and gas activities on shallow aquifers in the Fox Creek area

In this project, in order to analyze aerial deposition of contaminants resulting from oil and gas activities in west-central Alberta, samples of snowpack will be collected from the Fox Creek area for chemical analysis. Using the chemical analyses results, a map of the contaminants deposition and their potential sources of release will be delineated. The success of this project will enable Recion Technologies’ client to integrate the experimental results into their numerical models and study the transport of contaminants, emitted from oil and gas activities, and their distribution in ecosystem. Moreover, identifying the sources of such contaminants will aid the oil and gas operators to lower their environmental footprint by adopting new practices.
