Intelligent Card Detection for Automatic Documentation & e-Commerce

The goal of this project is to develop a Card Detection for Automatic Documentation solution that will be able to detect all features of a collectible card from a scanned image. Given a large number of design variations in cards, simple OCR cannot provide all available information. We aim to deliver an AI-driven solution deploying learning-based approaches and computer vision algorithms to extract all possible variations of elements found on a card. New card entries will be added to the database for online trading. Web-crawler tools will be developed to search reference information from the Internet to put a price tag on the card. This full-stack framework includes a front-end to back-end routing and task execution pipeline. We anticipate benefits to not only the collectible card online trading businesses, but also Canada technologically and economically.

SOTI SNAP Digital Signage

SOTI has developed a software product called SOTI SNAP that allows anyone to create an app with no programming or technical knowledge. The goal of this project is to develop media scheduler widgets so that users can create playlists consisting of mixed media (videos, images, documents) and then deploy them at specific hours on certain days. Since one user may have multiple mobile devices and one mobile device may be controlled by multiple users, we should ensure all the devices have up-to-date media playlists, display and play back the content smoothly once the playlists are changed in one device. Additionally, all the process should not consume too much energy. The media scheduler widgets will help SOTI attract more clients and make users work more efficiently.

Heavy Gauge Line Pipe Development with The Thermomechanical Processing Model Implementation

The project objective is to understand and apply the metallurgical fundamentals for the heavy gauge steel product development. The major tasks can be divided into two groups: (A) the precipitate investigation through conventional and advanced characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and (B) the implementation of thermomechanical processing models for the rolling schedule design, which demands rigorous validations against the rolling mill and/or product data. Our robust thermomechanical processing models will be integrated with the Integ model. A successful study of these fundamental issues will help our industrial partner (EVRAZ) understand the precipitation behavior and improve hot rolling schedule designs, facilitating the heavy gauge product development and then reducing the economic cost for oil and gas transportation, especially for regions in Northern Canada. It will also increase the international competence of EVRAZ for heavy gauge products.

SOTI SNAP Widget Enhancement

SOTI has developed a software product called SOTI SNAP that allows anyone to create an app with no programming or technical knowledge. SOTI SNAP allows users to create apps by dragging and dropping widgets onto a canvas and connecting them together to create an app. The research problem to be addressed is to solve customer challenges by first understanding what the customer is asking for, then research on what is the best way to meet their needs, and finally, create brand new or enhance existing widgets so anyone can use them easily and effectively. The objective of the research is to take SOTI SNAP widgets to the next level of usefulness by creating new and updated widgets that will excite and delight SOTI’s customers without a single line of code.

Optimisation de l’utilisation du glycérol chez la vache laitière; quantification des impacts et des facteurs de variation par méta-analyse

En début de lactation et pour subvenir à ses besoins énergétiques (production du colostrum et du lait pour son veau), la vache laitière a toujours et naturellement eu recours au glycérol en mobilisant ses propres réserves de gras (stocké sous forme de triglycéride). Cependant, cette mobilisation excessive et répétée (après chaque naissance) répondant à l’amélioration constante des performances laitières compromet le cycle de vie des vaches laitières. Le glycérol alimentaire permettrait de répondre à ce défi en fournissant une source d’énergie supplémentaire qui en même temps peut améliorer le statut énergétique et prévenir l’incidence de maladies métaboliques observées au début de lactation chez la vache
La méta-analyse a été choisie comme outil pour résumer et quantifier les connaissances acquises sur le glycérol dans l’alimentation des vaches laitières. Les facteurs de modulation de réponse (ex. ; forme, niveaux d’apport et mode d’apport) seront ainsi identifiés, quantifiés permettant d’établir des recommandations d’utilisation utiles pour le nutritionniste et rentables pour l’éleveur laitier.

Recommendations to combat the growing problem of antibiotic use and resistance in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada

Researchers found that inappropriate antibiotic usage is widely spread (documented in 20-50%
prescriptions in hospitals around the world). Optimizing usage of Antibiotics in clinical environment is
a critical public health issue. All stakeholders including healthcare professionals, patients, healthcare
providers, hospital administrators, and policy makers should work together to implement effective
strategies for optimizing antibiotic use. Benefits of Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP) are
well-recognized; however it is not widely adopted. Antibiotics Stewardship Programs (ASP) support
three main issues; improving cost-effectiveness, developing better clinical outcomes, and addressing
the growing bacterial resistance challenge. The objectives of my research project is to review the
literature on antibiotic stewardship, collect and analyse clinicians practices in PNHR and propose an
ASP suitable for PNHR environment. The methodology will involve approaching data sources
(pharmacies, Ministry of Health and CFIA) for available qualitative and quantitative tools to determine
the nature of antibiotics usage (type & amount) and indications in PNHR clinical, community and
veterinary settings.

Learning Spatial and Temporal Attention for AI-driven Virtual Sports Trainers

Fitness apps are widespread, used by professionals and casual users alike. Existing apps only give examples, they don’t correct. The proposed research closes this feedback loop by using the video camera on mobile phones as an analysis tool to judge and correct the execution of common gym exercises. This is particularly important for weight lifting, where inappropriate poses and motions commonly lead to injury. Furthermore, small improvements in form can lead to large improvements in efficiency. Besides huge practical impact potential, the developed approaches will extend the video classification literature to further increase accuracy and applicability to everyday scenarios.

Rates of Change in Organizational Identification During Organizational Integration

A significant part of people’s self-concept, who and what they think about themselves and who they are, is based on the groups and organizations they consider themselves part of, including their workplace. People who identify with their workplace are more committed to and satisfied with their jobs, and are less likely to leave. When a work organization integrates with other organizations, however, a new organization is born, which employees don’t yet identify with.
This research will track employees from multiple mental health and substance abuse organizations throughout an integration, to better understand how quickly people come to identify with a newly formed organization, whether it matters if they previously worked for a larger or smaller organization, and whether all of the benefits of identification develop at the same time. By understanding when and how identification happens, we can maximize the well-being and productivity of the employees and organizations involved.

Examining Let’s Talk Science’s Canada 2067 Learning Roadmap in evolving approaches to STEM education in a digital world

The current project aims to examine the knowledgebase of both teaching candidate (pre-service) and in-service teachers in 21st century competencies of digital literacy and computational thinking. Additionally, this project seeks to understand how these competencies may be incorporated into faculty of education training programs for teaching candidates. The intern will design, administer, and analyze surveys in partnership with the partner organization through professional development and learning opportunities for in-service teachers. As well, the intern will analyze the current curriculum of Canadian university/college programs in teacher education for themes and courses on digital literacy, computational thinking, and related constructs. This will further her interest in teacher education and school-based research methodologies and provide her with valuable experience with the partner organization to observe how research and industry intersect. The partner organization will gain insight into how the Canada 2067 recommendations could be applied in practice and which approaches may be more successful than others in teacher education.

Hybrid bacteriophage platforms for the production of non-invasive, self-adjuvanted, and targeted DNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2

Our project aims to design and develop COVID19 vaccines engineered from viruses that infect bacterial cells only. SARS-CoV2 pathogenic components have been identified and modified to develop the vaccine. Although these components are pathogenic in nature, they are modified to pose no harm. The vaccine is designed to be administered intranasally, where it relocates to the lower respiratory tract. Upon reaching respiratory cells, the vaccine binds to respiratory cells and delivers the carried component. The delivered component will self-assemble into a SARS-CoV2 shape mimic. The released SARS-CoV2 mimic is picked up by immune cells and then generates an immune response. The SARS-CoV2 also has the ability to compete with the virulent SARS-CoV2 on cellular binding sites thus preventing the later infective mechanism.

Modélisation d’une centrale hydroélectrique avec système de stabilisation de puissance

La plupart des centrales hydro-électriques de grande envergure du Canada ont été construites il y a environ 50 ans. Durant les prochaines années, plusieurs d’entre-elles devront être modernisées avec des technologies beaucoup plus avancées qu’à l’époque. Pour tirer profit de ces nouvelles capacités de communication et de contrôle, le recours à des simulations numériques validées est requis. Ce projet de recherche a donc pour objectif de développer le modèle numérique d’une centrale complète, comprenant plusieurs groupes de production (générateurs) qui opèrent en parallèle. Ceci permettra à l’entreprise partenaire de déployer ses technologies actuelles ainsi que d’acquérir une expertise scientifique plus avancée qui ouvrira la porte vers de nouveaux marchés très lucratifs.

Mitigating Healthcare system challenges and risks in relation to pandemics such as COVID-19: a human resource planning approach using MeshAI.io platform

The shortage of healthcare personnel is a prevalent problem, primarily due to the substantial workloads caused by the novel Coronavirus strain. Moreover, due to the overwhelming and extremely dynamic situation in the healthcare industry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, staff scheduling becomes very crucial. This research project in collaboration with the MeshAI.io platform intends to propose an automated staff scheduler in the healthcare industry that ensures stress-free task delegation and smarter staff scheduling decisions in a very short time. The main challenges during such times undertaken by this project are 1) prevent overburn schedules for staff to boost performance, and 2) smart schedule to restrict unnecessary contact among the staff handling COVID-19 and regular patients to limit possible exposure to the virus. This research project can benefit the MeshAI.io platform to deal with uncertainties and challenges in the healthcare industry utilizing machine learning or artificial intelligence with smart human resource allocation.
