Whales from Space: Surveying Baleen Whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence using VHR Satellite Imagery

Ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement in particular have put right whales at risk of extinction with approximately 400 of this species remaining. Monitoring the remaining whale requires reliable detection of whales over large spatial scales. Traditionally, whale population size and distribution are estimated using trained experts on survey boats and planes. This project will develop an automated methods to visually detect endangered North Atlantic right whales from aerial and satellite imagery. The outcome of this project will allow for improved identification of whale location, improving the information available to ocean transportation by more easily identifying the location of right whales and allowing shipping companies and government partners to make more informed decisions about shipping lanes, vessel speed, and other movement criteria that may impact the reliability of shipping logistics with balancing the safety of the whales.

Dynamics and Stability of a Crosswind Kite Power System

The proposed project aims to develop some novel mathematical tools to ensure the safe design and operation of crosswind kite power systems (CKPS). CKPS are part of an emerging wind energy technology, which harness from naturally strong steady winds at high altitudes, where the airborne energy harvesting device is kept aloft using very light tethers. The tools developed during this project will particularly be indispensable in ensuring the safety of the base station where the mechanical power from the flying kite is converted to electricity. This will be instrumental to the development of a novel hydraulic-based drive-train system and thus to the eventual economic success of the industrial partner.

BIM-based Seismic Performance Assessment of Buildings for Post-Earthquake Rehabilitation

As many of the existing buildings are reaching almost the end of their actual design life, new buildings are replacing them with more innovative and complicated technologies. At the same time, there are concerns and uncertainties about probabilistic structural failures and undesired structural system behaviors. The performance of these building under loads such as earthquakes and other natural disasters are of great interest. Therefore, seismic damage assessment of buildings for post-earthquake rehabilitation have received significant attention in the rcent times. It is important to improve the resilience of these buildings and minimize the loss due to natural hazards. The proposed study aims to improve existing seismic damage assessment of buildings and provide a mechanism for visualization of their performance and damage states based on the data from on-board instrumentation.

Simulation and modifications of an industrial scale dehydrator

CanDry is currently in R&D stage developing a dehydrator for drying organic and in-organic materials. A prototype is built for testing purposes which will help to design a good quality product. For modifying the design of prototype, we need to simulate the electromagnetic behaviour of the system and run multiple tests to compare the simulation design with the practical outcome. Additionally, as our technology is a combination of 4 commonly used drying solutions, the system needs to be tested to find out the effects of the different factors on the performance of the prototype and find the best operating points. Also, for controlling the amount of radiations, it is required to have an understanding of the temperature and moisture level in the drying chamber. Therefore, another intern is needed to develop a reliable monitoring system.

Elaboration of a high-throughput toolbox for analysis and visualization of mesoscale longitudinal cortical imaging dataset

The analysis of large, complex data helps scientists from different fields (e.g. physics, chemistry, biology) to provide new insights on their research. The field of neuroscience is no different. Larger and more complex studies which create huge amount of data are more and more common. Thus, the development of tools capable of processing large datasets is necessary to further advance our understanding of the brain function. Despite some limited efforts to address this issue, there is a lack of software resources capable of dealing with these datasets. Thus, in this project, the intern will contribute to the creation of a new open source software designed to manage and process large datasets from brain optical imaging experiments. This project will help the partner organization to gain visibility in the market of biomedical research instruments by associating the software with the equipment sold by the company.

Enrichment strategy for cardiovascular clinical trials

Cardiovascular clinical trials try to demonstrate the benefit of a medication on populations where the number of participants with the targeted disease is very low. The low efficacy of treatment is partially due to the diversity of diseases and of the population. To improve the efficacy of treatment, it is necessary to improve the recruitment of participants that are at greater risk of the studied disease through a process known as “population enrichment”. This project proposes the development of a tool for population enrichment by identifying participants at greater risk of a cardiovascular event based on laboratory blood work, clinical data, and specific genetic mutations. This will allow further identification of subgroups most likely to benefit from cardiovascular treatment. Ultimately, this technology could become a stepping stone for the use of precision medicine in cardiovascular diseases.

Pickup and Delivery with Smart Service Times

The research problem to be addressed is the pickup and delivery problem (last mile) with precedence constraints for the pickup/delivery operations, and time windows. The objective is: (i) the design of a new algorithm that will use the algorithm of Curtois et al. [6] as a starting point, and to generalize it with precedence constraints, time windows and smart service times constraints and, the implementation and the testing of that algorithm with data sets coming from regular customers of Clear Destination, (ii) the design of a machine learning model and algorithm for the computation of the size of the time windows based on the type of goods and the characteristics of the pickup/delivery addresses, using the current available data, its implementation and testing , and (iii) a set of recommendations for the collection or the acquisition of more data related to the characteristics of the pickup/delivery addresses.
Benefit for the partner organization will be a more flexible and robust software for the planning of last mile pickup and delivery, with shorter and more accurate time windows. This will in turn increase the satisfaction of the destined clients of the pickup and delivery operations.
