Thermally Compensated Fabry-Perot MEMS Pressure Sensor

Pressure sensing during plastic injection molding is critical to the quality of manufactured consumer and commercial goods and need to be able to operate up to temperatures of 350°C and pressures up to 10,000 psi. In this case, pressure is measured using a membrane to infer displacement and depending on the conditions, the membrane may be directly exposed to the load. In the majority of cases, pressure transfer fluids such as mercury, are used to protect the sensor from the high temperature of the plastic melt and to facilitate remote sensing. However, the use of these fluids reduces the accuracy of the sensor and mercury is restricted in Canada and many other countries. In the proposed project, the intern will develop a first-generation of thermally compensated fiber-optic Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Fabry-Perot pressure sensors that can operate at temperatures up to 200°C and 1000 psi, using packaging technologies…

Detection of suspicious and/or abnormal real-time events from textual live data feeds

Social media and other real-time messaging applications represent valuable sources of real-time information that remain untapped by many service operators. The project is aimed at developing methodology for detecting suspicious and/or abnormal real-time events from textual live data feeds, based on predictive and/or anomaly detection algorithms applied to time series and text features.
TRT Canada is therefore interested in developing algorithms that will be able to recognize such events based on similarities with past events in order to address the mentioned scenario.
The research consists of evaluating some of the state-of-the-art methods in textual analytics in text stream processing and neural network techniques, such as deep learning and convolutional neural network. The experiments are designed to measure effectiveness of these methods at detecting anomalies and new events, event classification, and identification of event features, such as actors, locations, and time characteristics.

Delocalization excitation and radiation

This project is to investigate a subtle new mechanism by which particles can be produced. The new mechanism, which has first been proposed by the applicant and her supervisor, is expected to occur for well isolated, small quantum systems, such as single atoms, molecules or ions, which are left to evolve freely. When such quantum systems are initially prepared in a localized state, and are then left to evolve freely, their centre of mass wave function spreads out due to quantum delocalization. An example implementation could be initially localized ions in an ion trap, which are then left to evolve freely by suddenly switching off the trapping laser beams. The quantum delocalization process can lead to the excitation of the system, as well as to the emission of a photon. TO BE CONT’D

Advanced Battery Modelling in Electric Bus Platforms to Enable Next-Gen Low-Carbon Public Transit

With the ever-increasing growth of the consumer Electric Vehicle (EV) market and environmental awareness of federal and provincial governments, electrification of public transit systems has come under the spotlight in recent years. Currently, there is limited practical knowledge on how to efficiently deploy EV buses across different Canadian regions, which results in a wide gap between advanced EV technology and Canadian environmental parameters.
EV batteries are negatively affected by cold temperatures, bad road conditions, and aggressive driving behaviours. This results in a shorter life-span of the battery pack and it’s quicker degradation. To reduce these negative effects, public transit companies need to fully understand how batteries behave under different operating and environmental conditions, and these conditions are not the same across Canada. Furthermore, EV manufacturing companies also need to adapt their designs to these conditions for successful marketing.

An evaluation of alternatives to diesel fuel for use in Canada’s class 8 heavy-duty vehicles.

Canada has committed to combatting climate change. To do this, Canada must find ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the country’s most polluting sectors. Transportation accounts for roughly a quarter of the country’s total GHG emissions, and though electric vehicles have been identified as a promising strategy for passenger vehicles, a viable alternative to diesel for Canada’s trucking industry is unclear. This research will identify the most promising alternatives to diesel for implementation in Canada based on their ability to reduce GHG emissions at the lowest cost. It will focus specifically on Canada’s most common truck, the tractor trailer. This research will evaluate the ease of adoption of each alternative based on the scale at which the technology has previously been used.
