Position sensitive detector density well logging tool development

In well-logging industry, gamma-ray density logging is an indispensable method to determine formations’ lithology and porosity. This research proposal under the support of MITACS and Rimpac Advanced Technology Development Ltd. aims at developing a high-resolution density well logging tool which is expected to achieve higher precision and better vertical resolution of formation density measurement. This work is based on a previous MITACS project. In this project, we will study the performance of this novel density logging tool in some complex geologic models.

Cellular regulation of human inducible nitric oxide synthase

The main aim of the project is to find new mechanisms by which Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is regulated in human cells. Regulation of iNOS through post-translational mechanism stage can give better results. That is why in this project iNOS expression is controlled at the post-translational level.
High concentration of NO can cause tissue damage, and iNOS is the enzyme responsible for the continuous synthesis of NO. The expression of iNOS is tightly regulated by complex molecular mechanisms, involving both translational and post-translational levels. It was found that NO acts in a positive feedback manner to amplify iNOS protein levels. Reduction in iNOS protein degradation is done by mTOR, a kinase that plays a role in the regulation of cell growth, proliferation, survival, and metabolism. Chudnovsky-Ramanujan Type Formulae

In a well-known 1914 paper, Ramanujan gave a number of rapidly converging series for 1/pi which are derived using modular functions of higher level. The Chudnovskys derived an analogous series representation 1/pi, often used in practice for record breaking computations of pi. These formulae have recently been explained in the context of elliptic curves, modular curves, and the Picard-Fuchs differential equation. In particular, these series representations for 1/pi arise from relations between periods of families of elliptic curves and hypergeometric solutions to their associated Picard-Fuch differential equations; we refer to such relations as Chudnovsky-Ramanujan type formulae. The aim of this project is to apply this framework to derive a complete list of Chudnovsky-Ramanujan type formulae. This will be done by identifying the families of elliptic curves suitable for the method and then applying the method on each such family to produce the resulting list of Chudnovsky-Ramanujan type formulae.

Development of algorithms and methods for information fusion enabled decisionsupport

In every situation humans make observations and analyse the observed information, by combining and evaluating the relationships between the observation to understand the situation. Often these observations can be uncertain, redundant, from unknown sources, contradictory, and too many for a human to be able to analyse fast enough and correctly, leading to incorrect assessment of the situation. The proposed research is based on the hypothesis that through application of various probablistic, possibilistic, and other applied mathematics methods it is possile to enhance humans ability to analyse large amounts of redundant, uncertain, sometimes contradictory information, enhancing his/her capability to correctly understant situations. Te proposed research will extend the currently ongoing research on the application of imperfect information representation theories (including belief functions with their link to probability) to enhance situation understanding in a context where information, coming from a broad variety of sources (internet, police, military, coast guard, etc.) is uncertain…….

Design and optimization of new peroxidase ribozymes based on RNA Mango constructs

DNA and RNA oligonucleotides that fold to form four-stranded structures (G-quadruplexes) are known to bind heme and such complexes to catalyze 1-electron (peroxidase-like) and 2-electron (peroxygenase-like) oxidation reactions. While successful in competing with protein peroxidase enzymes in this respect, G-quadruplex•heme complexes are currently not competitive with protein enzymes with regard to the enantioselectivity of the products generated. We will try to study, mutate, and develop existing complex RNA G-quadruplexes, the so-called “RNA Mango” molecules, which bind heme but provide a more complex, “enzyme active site-like” environment around the heme. These may thus be more promising reagents for giving enantioselective oxidation products from chosen substrates.

Things (IoT) has attracted significant investments by diversifying entrant firms like Amazon and Netflix, and startups like Airbnb and Spotify to bundle resources, including generic technology and market assets from different markets, to design and deliver products/services over technology platforms (Brynjolfsson & McAfee, 2012). However, Canadian business owners are making very slow progress in adapting to such a digital platform ecosystem. According to Statistics Canada (2013), only 13% of Canadian businesses were selling online, while Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA, 2015) Internet Factbook reported that over 40% of small businesses did not have a website presence. Motion fields with deep reinforcement learning for real-time character animation

Character motion in games and animations often have high requirements of realism, aesthetics, and interactivity. For instance, in soccer simulation games, users control the players to move in different directions and perform actions such as passing and shooting. Modern data-driven approaches like motion fields provide convenient ways to synthesizing natural motions from a given database of motion capture data. In this work, we look to improve motion fields by leveraging deep reinforcement learning. The benefit to the partner organization is the development of a new technology that can potentially improve the quality of their entertainment products as well as gaining expertise in these upcoming technologies.

Development of a new comprehensive simulation tool for helicopter design – The CORAL consortium

Designing a new helicopter is a very complex task that demands the collaboration of many disciplines of aerospace engineering. Nowadays, noise impact has also become crucial as restrictive environmental noise impact certification issues are being enforced by the certification authorities to the manufacturers. This project will be concerned with the integration of all these disciplines into a single computational simulation tool to predict a new helicopter performance. The project will be carried out in collaboration with international partners. A new consortium named CORAL (Comprehensive Rotorcraft Analyses Lab) was formed. CORAL will involve international partners in Germany, Italy, Greece and Canada under the coordination and financial support of Kopter Germany GmbH – the R&D responsible body of the Kopter Group based in Switzerland and an emerging helicopter manufacturer. Enhanced Model Suitability Analysis in Catastrophe Modelling through an Improved Understanding of the Seismic Hazard in Western Canada

One of the most destructive natural disasters that Canada could experience is a major earthquake affecting a highly-populated area. A 2013 study commissioned by the Insurance Bureau of Canada estimated that a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in British Columbia, and a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in the Quebec City-Montreal-Ottawa corridor would result in financial losses of almost $75 billion and $61 billion, respectively. These earthquake impacts are estimated with catastrophe modelling software, which express mathematically the fundamental physical characteristics of catastrophic events, such as earthquakes. In order for catastrophe models to accurately estimate the impacts of earthquakes, accurate seismic hazard characterization is essential. A first step in adequate seismic hazard characterization is identifying all possible seismic sources in a region, and their corresponding seismic rates (i.e. the frequency with which earthquakes above a certain magnitude occur at each source). Mathematical modelling of Reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (RSOFCs) for the conversion of CO2 and H2O to syngas

SeeO2 energy and the Birss group (UCalgary) have developed world-leading catalysts for RSOFC systems with promising performance for the production of syngas and power from H2O/CO2 feeds. Today, the company is aiming to scale-up this technology and move towards commercialization by building larger cells, up to 5 x 5 cm2 (16 cm2 electrode area). However, the process of scaling-up RSOFCs presents many challenges in understanding the effects of fabrication and operation parameters on the cell performance at larger scale. Therefore, developing a mathematical model for the system presents an opportunity to understand and interpret complex results while supporting the development of pathways for optimization, design parameters and decreasing experimental work that generates significant delays and costs. This project aims to develop a mathematical model of the RSOFC system capable of predicting the cell performance under changing operation conditions and design parameters. TO BE CONT’D

Développement de nouvelles structures en béton avec fibres synthétiques de pneus usés armé de barres en matériaux composites de polymère renforcé de fibres (PRF)

Au cours de la dernière décennie, les barres en matériaux composites de polymère renforcé de fibres (PRF) ont été utilisées avec succès comme renforcement principal pour les structures en béton telles que les ponts, les dalles de stationnement, les réservoirs d’eau, les tunnels et les structures marines. Ces ouvrages ont démontré de bonnes performances et une bonne durabilité. Les performances des ouvrages en béton armé de PRF peuvent être améliorées en incorporant des fibres dans le béton. Les fibres d’acier et de polypropylène sont les plus couramment utilisées pour améliorer les performances du béton. Le présent projet de recherche propose le développement de nouvelles structures telles que les dalles de ponts, les pieux préfabriqués, les dormants en béton avec fibres synthétiques de pneus usés armés de matériaux composites de polymère renforcé de fibres (PRF).
