Non-emerg. Patient Transfer Scheduling and Assignment
The objectives of this research project are to design and evaluate scheduling and assignment models to minimize travel costs and maximize the service level delivered for non-emergency patient transportation. This will be done using operations research, a branch of applied mathematics where models of a system are formulated to predict the system’s performance based on a given set of input parameters, system structure, and stakeholder actions. The objective is typically to determine the decision policies (i.e. stakeholder actions) which achieve a desired (or best) system performance. The primary contribution of this model is to design scheduling approaches to improve the efficiency of EMS patient transfer systems. Best practices for scheduling transfers produced from this study will be directly transferable to EMS systems around the world including those found in Nova Scotia and the Netherlands.
