BEAM: Building Energy Analysis and Monitoring

This project aims to improve energy efficiency and conservation in commercial buildings through statistical modeling and data analysis. Computer software will be developed which can predict future building energy consumption, and assist in diagnosing misconfigured equipment and recommending ways to save energy within buildings. This project is joint work between Pulse Energy, a Vancouver-based company which helps customers better understand and manage their energy consumption, and the Information Systems and Science for Energy (ISS4E) research laboratory at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, located at the University of Waterloo. This project will expand Pulse Energy’s advanced energy analytics portfolio with new, state-of-the-art statistical techniques developed specifically for use with Pulse customers.

Dietary costs and benefits of lakeshore vs aggregate pit breeding in Bank Swallows (Riparia riparia)

Bank Swallows (Riparia riparia), a threatened species in Ontario, breed primarily in either banks at lakeshores or at exposed surfaces in man-made aggregate pits that occur with and without waterbodies. Pits are suspected to be ecological traps for this species but the relative trade-offs in nesting at pits vs. natural sites are poorly known. Availability of aquatic emergent insects is expected to be highest at lakeshore colonies with associated nutritional benefits including Omega-3 fatty acids. However, Bank Swallows may experience differential mercury exposure depending on habitat use. Potential difference in dietary quality among sites may directly influence juvenile body condition. This study seeks to compare these breeding habitats to evaluate dietary differences. This information will be important for management decisions related to the use of pits by this species and conservation of suitable nesting habitats.

Filtration hyperbare d’une suspension de chaulage au moyen d’une presse à vis

Le but de cette étude est de réaliser une presse à vis pour compacter une suspension de chaulage. L’étude sera divisée en plusieurs étapes : la caractérisation de la boue, la simulation de la presse à vis, l’assemblage de la vis, le paramétrage de la vis et son opération. La phase de simulation permettra le dimensionnement de la vis. Par la suite, la vis sera construite et assemblée prête à être opérée afin d’identifier les paramètres optimaux. Au terme du projet, le montage expérimental et modèle mathématique servira la conception à pleine échelle de dispositifs industriels de compactage

Creating a database of Cherenkov spectra in ordered liquids

The aim of this is to produce a comprehensive database of Cherenkov emission/absorption spectra in ordered liquids (ionic liquids and solutions of nanomaterials) under differing thermodynamic conditions. This database will be valuable in creating a quantitative model and theoretical models able to predict the spectra of a given material under given conditions with an ultimate goal of producing methodologies to characterize materials in-situ for use in the nuclear and medical industries.

Design Analytics

Architectural design data have mostly been limited to visual representations, specifications and contractual documents. Today, design firms generate vastly more and diverse data, but lack adequate access to tools to gain insight from such data. Yet the field of “visual analytics” provides concepts and systems exactly for working with such data. The proposed research aims at the visualization and analytics of design data, that is, collections of designs, their alternatives, project documentation, and other data collected from buildings and their settings. These data collections contain both geometric design data, and large amounts of numeric and textual data in both structured and unstructured form, describing processes, contracts and design performance. We will devise, and evaluate prototype computational tools for mapping data onto geometric design representations and vice versa. Our work combines the fields of visual analytics and design, which combination we call “design analytics.”

Diversity and Inclusion: Case studies of skilled migrants in Hamilton Canada

This project involves in depth interviews of HR/line managers as well as skilled migrant employees in 3 organizations. Our focus is on understanding current issues and challenges related to inclusion and integration of skilled migrants locally. Our goal is offer actionable practical suggestions in terms of how identified challenges may be addressed in the future. Specifically, we are interested in providing advice around better inclusion practices and in depth understanding of current issues from multiple perspectives. We intend to formulate our suggestions both in terms of practical report with infographics as well as a workshop that will offer specific type of training identified as key to more effective integration practices.

Stage en imagerie moléculaire et cancérologie

Le projet consiste en la conception et l’utilisation de modèles cellulaires et animaux de cancers et fibroses, notamment de tumeur cérébrale, pour l’étude de l’hypoxie tumorale. Les techniques d’imagerie par résonance magnétique et de tomographie à émission de positrons seront utilisées pour réaliser l’étude. La manipulation de la radioactivité afin d’obtenir des images scintigraphiques sera impliquée ainsi que la manipulation de modèle animaux et la réalisation de culture cellulaire. L’objectif clinique est d’améliorer la prise en charge des patients et d’offrir des traitements plus personnalisés.

Soudage laser avancé sur extrusions d’aluminium

Le projet de recherche proposée porte sur l’amélioration du soudage laser de composantes en aluminium. Composantes qu’on peut retrouver dans des lignes d’assemblage automatisé de l’industrie du transport (automobile, ferroviaire ou aéronautique). Le perfectionnement et la précision micrométrique dans la réalisation de soudure au laser de qualité supérieure, permettront : d’améliorer la productivité de l’organisme partenaire, de lui éviter des pertes de temps et d’argent sur des essais erreurs à cause de la non-disponibilité de procédures de de soudage au laser de composantes en aluminium, et finalement de lui garantir une rapidité de 10 à 20 fois plus élevées que celle d’un procédé de soudage traditionnel.

Strenghtening Community Capacity for Reducing Marine Debris

Marine debris is an ever growing environmental and human health concern. Beach litter is a major contributor to the issue of marine debris, especially in the Global South where often lack of awareness and lack of policy enforcement are factors that promote continuous littering of beaches in coastal communities. Under the community-based, participatory action framework, this study will examine how beach users and other local key stakeholders in the fishing and tourism sectors as well as non-governmental organizations in the coastal communities under study perceive waste in their environment. The case study will explore ways of improving awareness and environmental education of beach users. The research will investigate ways to reduce littering of waste on beaches. Results from this research will help to provide suggestions for local decision makers for the design of policies and educational strategies that effectively address marine debris and beach littering.

Un analogue acoustique de l’effet Casimir

Les objectifs et finalités du stage :
On propose ici à l’étudiant l’analyse d’un système modèle de l’effet Casimir se manifestant par l’attraction de deux miroirs se faisant face dans le vide. Ici, les fluctuations de point zéro seront apportées par l’intermédiaire d’un champ acoustique ad-hoc qui excitera le système des deux miroirs acoustiques. L’étudiant sera en charge du banc expérimental instrumenté et devra mener des campagnes de mesure conjointement avec une analyse théorique ou numérique du problème.
Les activités confiées au stagiaire :
Le stagiaire aura pour mission l’amélioration du banc expérimental ainsi que le développement d’une méthode théorique permettant de modéliser les résultats obtenus. Selon la complexité, un recours à des simulations numériques tri-dimensionnelles du problèmes sera possible.

Individual Neuronal Feature Extraction and Representations (INFER): Emulating the perceptual system of individuals with extraordinary visual skills by combining deep neural networks and visual psychophysics

Each and every one of us has distinct visual representations of persons, familiar objects and scenes. We all acquire and form these visual representations in our brains through our unique experiences, but how exactly do we acquire these representations? What specific visual information supports the conceptual representation of objects in our brains and what part of this information is necessary for recognition? Cognitive neuroscience studies have so far focussed on investigating the commonalities between individuals in the human visual system as though each individual share the same visual face or object templates. Yet, scientists are beginning to discover that even common representations such as facial emotion expressions of fear or joy show clear discrepancies according to culture (ex. Caucasian and Easterners), neurodevelopmental disorders (ex. schizophrenia, autism), or even according to individual variations of perceptual ability between neurotypical individuals. Système de gestion des traversées piétonnes aux intersections munies de feux de circulation et virage à droite au feu rouge: étude comparative entre Québec et Montréal

Les intersections représentent un enjeu de sécurité particulier pour les piétons. Les Villes de Montréal et de Québec ont deux façons très différentes de gérer les traversées des piétons aux intersections dotés de feux de circulation. L’étude qui sera réalisée en partenariat avec l’INRS, l’Université Laval et Accès transports viables va permettre d’analyser les impacts sur les usagers de ces modes de gestion, mais également de mesurer le sentiment de sécurité des piétons à ces intersections. Ainsi, avec une méthodologie éprouvée (via des observations non-participantes et un questionnaire sur rue), l’organisme Accès transports viables, dont une partie de la mission est la défense des usagers des transports actifs, pourra se baser sur des arguments scientifiques mesurés dans son rôle de plaidoyer auprès des instances publiques. L’étude se conclura d’ailleurs par un évènement d’envergure et ouvert au grand public pour vulgariser les résultats.
