Development of Grid Friendly Net-Zero Energy Houses

This project aims to investigate grid friendly net-zero energy residential buildings. These are buildings that consume as much energy as they produce, on an annual basis. The three proposed subprojects will investigate this concept through both simulation and real-world system monitoring at the TRCA’s Archetype Sustainable House. To begin, the design of highly energy efficient buildings will be examined, using the Passive House Standard as a basis. The optimization of buildings will also be investigated, through a building integrated solar heating and cooling system. Finally, any remaining electricity consumption of the buildings will be offset with the control of integrated grid-friendly renewable energy generation and storage systems. Tied together, this project hopes to help develop sustainable practices, and demonstrate the future of sustainable, net-zero energy residential buildings.

In-depth analysis of furbearer population data: population projections using current data and improvements to harvest data collection policies

This project will explore opportunities for modeling and making better use of harvest data that the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources has and continues to collect. The Fur Institute of Canada and the Trappers Association of Nova Scotia support improving the knowledge of harvested species in Nova Scotia. We propose that an in-depth analysis of this information can be used to develop population estimates and improve data collection techniques. Age-at-harvest data are often used to determine population trends and to provide support for management. Multiple models will be developed based on what data is available. Various methods will be applied to the same data and the results will be interpreted together. Long-term frequent monitoring of populations will provide additional data for use in model validation. This will generate information that can be used to influence wildlife conservation and critique current provincial wildlife policies.

Augmented Reality in Surgery

Augmented Reality (AR) is the combination of virtual images with real objects in order to improve perception. It is a rapidly growing field and has many applications in medicine. For this research project we would like to apply AR to the surgical site during a simulated operation in order to provide additional information and improve surgical performance. This will involve making 3D models from CT scan data, setting up a projection system to display those models
into the surgical site and tracking the movement of the organs being operated on to maintain an accurate projection. Surgeons will be recruited to perform a surgical task with and without the AR system in order to measure their performance and receive feedback on their experience with the AR system. This information will aid in the development of new medical technology that assists with surgery as well as exploring how AR affects users whose tasks require great skill and focus.

Implementing and testing the first marine micro-grid system water-to-wire in a remote coastal community on Vancouver Island

Mavi is proceeding with the first commercial micro-grid tidal marine energy system in Canada. A 20-kW Darrius marine turbine will be operated water-to-wire in the remote community of at Blind Channel on Vancouver Island to displace diesel fuel as a source of power. This project will document and assess the first commercial demonstration of a grid connect marine turbine for a coastal community. There is significant interest to have communities reduce their dependence on imported diesel fuel. Distributed generation contributes to the viability and sustainability of such communities. This project will focus on resource assessment, turbine performance, turbine integration with the diesel genset and monitoring of the system. Mavi has tested their hydrokinetic turbine design in partnership with the University of Manitoba at the Canadian Hydrokinetic Turbine Testing Centre (CHTTC) located on the Winnipeg River. Mavi and the CHTTC will now assess the marine turbine performance and reliability in a commercial setting to displace diesel fuel in tidal applications with flows exceeding 3 m/s. This project will provide valuable data on the various aspects of this new marine technology and distributed energy application. The CHTTC will be applying its expertise gathered obtained in a riverine environment and working with MAVI.

eQUEST , eSight Quality of life and Efficacy Study

La société eSight a développé la lunette électronique eSight comme aide technique destinée à améliorer la vision des personnes malvoyantes.
Actuellement environ 400 personnes utilisent les lunettes eSight et en sont satisfaites mais encore aucune étude ne l’a démontré. Ainsi dans ce projet on cherche à savoir si les lunettes eSight améliorent la vision et la qualité de vie des malvoyants. Les objectifs de cette étude consistent à évaluer l’impact de cette aide technique sur les possibilités visuelles des malvoyants, également d’évaluer l’impact de l’outil sur la qualité de vie et d’identifier les activités de la vie quotidienne qui sont les plus avantagées par cette aide technique. Cette grande étude se répartira sur plusieurs sites nord-américains. Concernant notre projet, il se limitera au suivi de 10-12 patients sur le site de Montréal. A l’issue de cette étude nous nous attendons à observer une amélioration des possibilités visuelles et de la qualité par la lunette eSight chez ces patients. Cette collaboration industrielle permet au stagiaire de bénéficier de l’expertise technologique des ingénieurs et techniciens concepteurs de l’aide technique et ainsi d’optimiser le lien entre innovation technologique et application clinique, qui est le support de sa recherche. Le Triticum aestivum L. var Major. : Étude comparative du rendement, de la fusariose et des taches foliaires dans deux régies de cultures (biologique et intensive)

De plus en plus d’agriculteurs conscients que les bassins versants du Saint-Laurent sont contaminés par les pesticides agricoles convertissent leur régie de culture conventionnelle ou intensive en régie biologique (Agri-Réseau, 2014; gouvernement du Canada, 2015; UPA, 2015). Synagri, qui offre des produits de fertilisation, de protection des cultures, des semences et des services d’agronomie depuis plus de 20 ans, voit plusieurs de ses clients se convertir à l’agriculture biologique chaque année. Le guide du CÉROM et du Réseau des grandes cultures du Québec (RGCQ) (2014) fait état des résultats d’essais sur 3 ans pour plusieurs variétés de blé en régie conventionnelle, mais ne fait aucune recommandation quant aux variétés qui conviendraient à une régie de culture biologique. Notre recherche de niveau maîtrise se situe dans un prolongement des essais du RGCQ (2014). Nous effectuerons pour Synagri 2 essais en culture biologique pour deux variétés phares, dont l’une est reconnue comme la plus appropriée à la régie biologique. Ce projet prévoit donc de comparer les rendements et la vulnérabilité à la fusariose et aux taches foliaires de Triticum æstivum L. var. Major et de T. aestivum L. var. Fuzion en culture intensive vs en culture biologique.

Optimisation par éléments finis de la géométrie de poutres utilisées dans la construction de maisons à structure d’acier

Ce projet de recherche a pour objectif d’optimiser un type de poutres d’acier soumis à différentes utilisations. Une poutre épaisse possède généralement une plus grande résistance à la rupture et s’utilise dans plus de configurations mais son coût et son poids sont alors plus élevés et ses limites d’utilisation sont généralement inconnues. L’entreprise BONE Structure est spécialisée dans la construction de maisons modulaires à structure d’acier. Les maisons étant modulaires, l’architecture varie mais les poutres utilisées conservent toujours le même profilé surdimensionné. Toutes les poutres présentes dans ces maisons sont de la même forme et sont allongées ou raccourcies selon l’architecture. La méthodologie développée dans ce projet permettra de proposer une version optimisée (dont les limites en résistance sont connues) de cette poutre afin d’en diminuer le poids et de gagner sur le coût des matériaux et de production. De plus, les limites connues de la poutre permettront d’envisager plus facilement les nouveaux projets.

Universal surface modification method to encourage cell patterning

Surface modification to promote the patterning of mammalian cells is an important tool in cellular biology. It aids in the development of different tissue engineering scaffolds, biosensors, and validation of high throughput screening assays. Surface modification protocols must be tailored to each individual material which limits the utility of a successful antifouling strategy to individual materials. The cost to modify individual materials for multi-material devices, often used in biomedical development, is high. Therefore, a single antifouling method is highly desirable. Through collaboration with leading experts in this field at Soochow University, we hope to gain experience in polyethylene glycol grafting methods to apply to surface modification. Their expertise will improve high throughput screening assays as well as a number of other assays used to study biological interactions and characteristics of cells. This research opportunity provided by Mitacs Globalink will facilitate international collaboration for the development of a surface modification tool in extraordinarily high demand.

Coupling event sampling to ColiMinder® high-frequency monitoring of E. coli for improved microbial risk assessment in source waters (COLIRISK)

Safe drinking water supply is a daily need but it can be seriously threatened by microbial hazards originating from fecal contamination of source water, especially following periods of intense rainfall. In order to assess drinking water intakes (DWIs) vulnerability to fecal pollution and to take cost-effective decisions in case of hazardous events, it is urgent to implement early-warning systems. A recent enzyme-based technology, ColiMinder® enables to measure E. coli in water at high temporal resolution (every 15-30 minutes). In order to implement it for effective microbial risk assessment at DWIs, research first needs to clarify how E. coli signals are representative of the prevalent microbial risk (i.e. of pathogen loads). The present project thus aims at developing a simple and original system that integrates the ColiMinder® with an automated sampling device for event-based sampling and analysis of pathogens and fecal source tracers. This integrated system should prove useful in the implementation of the ColiMinder® at Canadian DWIs with the purpose to improve the assessment of their vulnerability to fecal pollution.

CCM Roll Conditioning

Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell production facility must condition rolls of catalyst coated membrane [CCM] material to specific humidity and temperature conditions before using CCM in the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane fuel cell manufacturing process. Rolls of CCM material are conditioned in a clean room for a fixed time upon delivery to the facility. The fixed time conditioning period was established based on previous testing of when a single type of CCM laid flat. To ensure CCM have dimensional stability, the CCM roll must have uniform water content. Ionic and electronic conductivity is proportional to water content so a CCM will be uniformly conditioned when they equilibrate. The roll conditioning time can be determined when a signal clearly indicates that ionic and/or electronic conductivity has reached a steady state. A test procedure will be developed using direct current (DC) measurements to quantitatively measure whether a CCM roll has been conditioned uniformly. This test procedure can improve quality assurance by tailoring conditioning time to individual types of CCM material and thickness; and possibly reduce the fixed time conditioning process to reduce overall fuel cell manufacturing time.

Community dynamics in restored salt marshes

Salt marshes are important coastal ecosystems because they provide many services to surrounding areas. However, due to their highly productive nature, they have a long history of being converted into farmland in Maritime Canada. In recent years, there has been strong interest in restoring salt marshes to protect against coastal erosion, mitigate sea level rise, and provide increased habitat for birds, fish, etc. Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and partners initiated a large salt marsh restoration project in 2010 near Fort Beauséjour, NB, with the goals of reverting farmland back to salt marsh habitat and assessing the effectiveness of restoration methods. The intern will continue to document/quantify patterns and rates of restoration of the biological community, at a critical point in the restoration process when the foundational plant species (Spartina alterniflora) is about the spread throughout the restoration sites. This process needs to be fully understood for our region, because dike removal and associated shoreline management are becoming increasingly common in the Maritimes. The project’s information will help develop best management strategies and be useful to various industries (environmental consulting, agricultural, transport, etc.) and to agencies interested in salt marsh restoration.
