Assessing Social Cognition in Autistic Youths and Adults

The goal of the project is to develop a series of standardized, performance-based computerized assessment tools for use in the examination of social cognition deficits in ASD. Drawing on the available experimental literature a number of potential assessment tasks will be identified, reviewed and configured for computer-based administration to children / youth with ASD. Programming of assessments will be followed by pilot testing, evaluation and validation in ASD and control children/youth. Key findings from analyses will be used to formulate recommendations regarding subtest modifications, inclusion and additional measures

A systems level optimization of the solar battery in a solar energy system

SunVault Energy Incorporated, a Kelowna, British Columbia based energy technology company, aims to become a significant player within the emerging Canadian solar industry. They have devised a technology, the solar battery, which integrates the energy storage and energy generation capabilities of a stand-alone solar energy system. They view this as potentially a means of lowering costs, increasing efficiencies, and reducing losses. In this project, the intern will explore the performance of the stand-alone solar energy systems that include the solar battery and contrast the obtained result with the conventional solar energy system. Means of improving the overall system performance will be sought. Finally, if time permits, pathways to commercialization, with a focus on technological improvements to the device and the overall system, will be sought.

Testing gravity using data from the Euclid satellite mission

One of the biggest mysteries in modern physics is “dark energy”. This strange form of energy makes up over half of our Universe and is causing space to expand faster and faster. Even 30 years after its Nobel Prize-winning discovery, we still have no clear idea what dark energy actually is. Scientists have come up with many different theories to explain dark energy in the last decades. Additionally, new telescopes have been constructed to explore larger parts of the Universe than ever before. These telescopes are now starting to gather huge amounts of data about millions of galaxies, giving us a unique opportunity to test new dark-energy theories. This process requires novel data analysis methods based on powerful machine learning tools that we will develop in this project.  The internship combines the skills from theory specialists of the University of Edinburgh with the data-analysis experts from the University of Waterloo.
These newly developed methods will be used in two of the world’s biggest upcoming galaxy surveys: the European-led Euclid satellite mission and the North American DESI instrument. This internship brings together teams from both sides of the Atlantic to solve one of the largest puzzles in our Universe.

This project will support that process by collecting and analyzing data, researching best practices from other municipalities, and engaging residents and local businesses through surveys and interviews. The results will help the Township create a clear, evidence-based plan that supports local growth, attracts investment, and strengthens community participation. The work will provide Ramara with practical recommendations to guide decision making and promote long-term economic and social sustainability.

Étudier l’effet de la pression et de la température sur la valeur nutritive d’un jus de betterave destinés aux sportifs

Un changement dans les mentalités s’opère graduellement qui tend à favoriser la consommation d’aliments les moins transformés possibles, voire les plus naturels. Ce projet de recherche propose une nouvelle approche pour la fabrication d’un jus de betterave en appliquant les hautes pressions. Le jus de betterave dont la consommation est recommandée, tant pour ses qualités nutritionnelles que pour ses propriétés fonctionnelles. Par exemple, il est reconnu que la betterave renferme de la bétamine et d’anthocyanines. De plus, la betterave est connue comme l’un des rares végétaux qui contiennent des bétalaïnes. Toutes ces molécules ont des propriétés antioxydantes par excellence. Des travaux d’optimisation seront réalisés dans le but de fixer les paramètres tels que la pression, le temps, la température et le pH pour garder les éléments nutritifs du jus. Cette étape sera réalisée chez l’entreprise Végétamix Inc et visera, en premier lieu à étudier l’effet de chaque paramètre sur la qualité du jus puis en deuxième lieu, l’effet combiné de ces quatre paramètres sur la qualité du jus désirée. Des analyses comparatives seront réalisées à l’université Laval.

Management and mining of big energy sector data

With advances in techniques, high volumes of valuable data are generated in many domains (e.g., energy sector) at a rapid rate. Consequently, a scalable and flexible system for efficient storage and fast management of these distributed data is needed. In this proposed research project, we plan to design and implement a cloud-based data storage & management system that is flexible, scalable and fast to handle distributed data in a parallel fashion for the partner organization. In addition, we also plan to design and implement a system that conducts parallelized data mining and machine learning to discover new patterns from the data stored in the above data management system. These discovered patterns would be beneficial to the partner organization as these patterns help complex decision making.

Health risks of agricultural intensification in Vietnam

During the last couple decades, agricultural practices have increased in intensity to meet the growing needs of economic growth and population growth in Vietnam. Increased livestock production, management of human and animal waste, hormone and antibiotic residues from humans and livestock present human and environmental health concerns. The risks of agricultural intensification to human health are not well studied and understood in Vietnam. In this study, I will explore the risks of agricultural intensification to human health through a systematic review of the literature. The information gained will be complemented with interviews with key environmental stakeholders to identify health issues associated with intense agricultural practices, as well as determine challenges in addressing these issues. The information gained from this study will be useful in informing existing or future policy relating to agricultural intensification.

La place des agriculteurs et des pêcheurs dans le développement touristique de Hôi An, Vietnam

A Hôi An, une ville vietnamienne au développement touristique très important, la place des activités traditionnelles est aujourd’hui remise en question, notamment en ce qui concerne l’agriculture et la pêche. Ces activités profitent parfois de l’essor touristique à travers le développement d’un nouveau marché, mais subissent aussi les contraintes de l’afflux de touristes. La recherche proposée vise à identifier des mesures, tant au niveau des politiques publiques que de l’aménagement du territoire, que la ville pourraient adopter pour atteindre l’objectif affiché de maintien de la diversité des activités socioéconomiques en contexte de développement rapide du tourisme. L’étude de l’évolution et de la situation actuelle de l’agriculture et de la pêche à Hôi An, comme celle des actions et programmes des autorités, devra être réalisée. Les résultats permettront, en plus d’analyser l’efficacité de la préservation des activités traditionnelles par les pouvoirs publics de la ville, d’explorer un enjeu de développement qui concerne de nombreuses villes misant sur le tourisme.

Méthode de décontamination/dégradation des retailles de cuir contaminées au Chrome (VI) et à la l’alumine

Le traitement du cuir requiert l’utilisation d’éléments chimiques et naturels, qui au cours du processus, permet d’assouplir, ternir et colorer les peaux animales. La disposition des retailles de coupe contamine le sol environnant. Certains composés sont toxiques pour la santé telle que le chrome et l’alumine, possédant des propriétés cancérigènes et mutagènes. Il est proposé d’étudier en laboratoire, à petite échelle, une méthode de dégradation/décomposition des retailles de cuirs tannés au chrome et à l’alumine (décontaminé préalablement par l’alcalinisation des retailles en milieu aqueux), par apports de substrats organiques (déchets urbains ou fumiers). Une fois dégradé, un terreau sera produit suite à la décomposition de peaux traitées, qui pourra être réintroduit dans le milieu naturel. Les résultats permettront de démontrer l’efficacité d’un tel traitement du cuir, ce qui va ainsi éviter des risques sanitaires pour les communautés locales qui puisent leur eau dans les nappes phréatiques.

Caractérisation de la matière première de peintures par spectroscopie infrarouge et chimiométrie

L’entreprise UCP Paint est un manufacturier de peintures architecturales et de produits de spécialités. Il s’agit d’un domaine fortement compétitif où la qualité des matières premières et leur accès peuvent être problématiques. Le projet vise à développer des méthodes de caractérisation de ces matières et des outils de classification de leur qualité et de leur performance. Ces outils serviront également à identifier de potentiels substituts qui préserveront la qualité des peintures. Le projet fait partie d’une stratégie de plus grande ampleur qui utilisera la spectroscopie infrarouge pour suivre le cycle de vie des peintures architecturales, de leur production jusqu’à leur vieillissement.

Social aspects of biodiversity conflicts: the case of human-jaguar coexistence in Calakmul, Mexico

Biodiversity conflicts considering human-wildlife interactions have usually been addressed in regard to the impacts of animals on human beings or properties and, conversely, of humans on animals, with the ultimate goal of reducing those impacts. However, this has rarely lead to long term conflict resolution, which suggests that conflict management should reside further than in the material aspect of damages and could be mainly affected by the underlying human-human conflict. Through the case study of the biodiversity conflict occurring around human-jaguar coexistence in the Calakmul region, in Mexico, our research will look into more detail at the actors’ perceptions of their own and others’ positions, at their roles within the debate surrounding jaguar management, and how these social aspects influence biodiversity conflict. Ultimately, we want to know if the consideration of human-human relationships could lead to enhanced management of biodiversity conflicts in a way that can reduce biodiversity impacts, resulting in better conservation outcomes for wildlife.

L2M – AI Powered Seed Analysis

As part of the Lab2Market program, this project explores the commercialization potential of the group’s previous research pertaining to the use of computer vision, artificial intelligence and machine learning to precisely detect and identify seeds. Over the 4-month duration of the project, the team will participate in Lab2Market workshops, panels, and lectures from successful founders and entrepreneurs. This will provide the researchers with crucial training and aid in developing a business plan. Next, the team will conduct as many as 100 interviews with potential clients and customers, to learn more about the needs and use-cases associated with this technology. These interviews will enable the group to accurately assess product-market fit. In the last month of the project, the research team will analyze their findings from the client interviews and work with the Lab2Market team to determine a path forward, whether it be incorporating as a startup company, licensing the technology, or continuing in research and development. At this time, the group will complete a polished pitch presentation and discuss their results with the entirety of the Lab2Market cohort. Through this project, participants will learn important entrepreneurial skills that will serve them through future projects and research that have strong potential for commercialization in the Canadian technology sector.
