Value Stream Mapping for Process Optimization of Construction Companies

Achieving maturity and excellence in project management requires systematic tools that establish well-defined processes and standardized procedures for effective planning and execution. Value Stream Mapping (VSM), a key lean methodology, enables construction organizations to identify inefficiencies, minimize waste, and enhance overall productivity. By providing a visual representation of the entire workflow—from project inception to completion—VSM helps stakeholders detect bottlenecks, redundancies, and non-value-adding activities, ultimately leading to streamlined operations. It also fosters collaboration and transparency by aligning teams around common objectives, improving communication, and facilitating continuous process optimization.
This project aims to enhance construction organizational efficiency through data-driven insights and industry best practices. It focuses on three key objectives: (1) conducting VSM analysis to diagnose workflow inefficiencies and resource allocation issues, informing strategies for operational improvement; (2) developing evidence-based recommendations to enhance process maturity, ensuring consistency and scalability through industry benchmarking and best practices; and (3) integrating Lean Six Sigma 4.0 principles to drive continuous improvement using advanced data analytics, automation, and digital tools. This structured approach will support ETRO Construction Limited in refining its organizational processes, improving productivity, and fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence, strengthening its competitiveness in the construction industry.

Building Language-Based Tourism Opportunities in Haida Gwaii, Canada

The purpose of this project is to work with the Haida to implement a community-based tourism program to support the development and revitalization of their language. Based on the findings of a doctoral thesis undertaken with the community, the program will support culturally appropriate uses of language within tourism settings. Foundational to the program is supporting language relationships, meaning the people, networks, and associations within the community that serve to create a mutually supportive speaking environment. The goal is to establish a planning strategy, clarify the program goals, and establish effective valued practices to support language usage. In addition to determining the effectiveness of the program by assessing the relationships supported, a critical inquiry will explore visitor perceptions toward language and cultural interpretation. This research will inform decisions on language content and training. The benefit to the partner organization is the development of a culturally appropriate and integrated language program in the community

Fur Seals, Nuu-chah-nulth and Pelagic Sealing in British Columbia (1860s-1910s)

In Canada in recent decades, Indigenous Peoples have been recognizing publicly their relationship with the environment as one of the fundamental features of their cultural identity. The project will show that historically Nuu-chah-nulth/marine mammal relationship was much more complex than commonly understood. While whaling is today recognized as central in their identity, history, and culture their relationship with pelagic mammals is more sophisticated. However, as Chief Earl George of the Ahousaht has noted, sea fur seals today are largely unknown among younger generations, despite communities relied on them in 19th century. Therefore, the project will get a light on what seems to be forgotten: how Nuu-chah-nulth/fur seal relationship evolved at a time when natives-settler interactions were very strong.

A Bayesian pharmacokinetics integrated phase I–II design to optimize dose-schedule regimes for multi-level multi-graded outcomes

Cancer treatment requires a precise understanding of how drugs work at different doses and schedules. This research project aims to develop an advanced method for designing clinical trials for early-stage cancer beyond traditional approaches. The project will create a sophisticated statistical framework that simultaneously evaluates drug toxicity and effectiveness across multiple complexity levels while incorporating detailed information about how drugs interact with the human body. Core Clinical Sciences (CCS) will benefit from this research by gaining a more nuanced approach to determining optimal drug dosing. The new methodology will allow researchers to make more accurate recommendations about drug schedules, potentially reducing side effects and improving treatment efficacy. By developing a more comprehensive analysis technique, this project could help researchers design smarter clinical trials that provide clearer insights into new cancer treatments, ultimately supporting the development of more personalized and effective cancer therapies.

Evaluating the impact of workplace indoor environmental quality on employee comfort and wellness

The design and quality of the indoor environment is understood to play an important role in the well-being and productivity of building occupants. While many building and design strategies have been employed to enhance the indoor environmental quality of workplace environments there is a surprising a lack of empirical evidence drawn from buildings in-use that shows how such strategies actually affect occupants. This research project involves a comprehensive post-occupancy evaluation, one that includes occupant surveys, observation, and physical measurements of environmental conditions, of four workplace environments. The purpose of the study will be to assess and compare the quality of these environments and to determine what features have the largest impact on employee satisfaction, wellness and self-reported productivity with a goal to provide feedback and improve existing and future workplace design and building practices. The results of this “pre-move” study will be used in a future “post-move” study that compares the IEQ performance of these “conventional” workplaces to the employee’s new “green” workplace.
