« Quartier » (Qualités, Usages et Acteurs des Trottoirs) : pour des milieux de vie durables

Depuis la création de la filiale de Google, Sidewalk lab, la gestion des trottoirs a été médiatisée : il s’agit de repenser la gouvernance des trottoirs à l’heure du numérique, en mobilisant les objets connectés. Le besoin d’une nouvelle gouvernance des trottoirs apparaît nécessaire dans un contexte où les usages du trottoir s’intensifient ainsi que les opérateurs qui s’y rencontrent. L’espace du trottoir devient rare et implique que les municipalités repensent leur manière d’organiser les activités qui s’y déploient. Cette nouvelle gestion ne peut faire l’économie, d’un inventaire exhaustif des usages et des activités ayant lieu sur le trottoir : le projet « Quartier » (Qualité, Usages et Acteurs des Trottoirs) vise ainsi à élaborer une grille d’analyse des trottoirs selon divers indicateurs provenant de la littérature ou d’entretiens menés auprès des acteurs. En approfondissant la question de la végétalisation le présent projet vient d’inscrire dans la démarche QUARTIER avec l’objectif de qualifier les aménagements urbains à l’aide d’indicateurs quantitatif permettant ainsi d’objectiver les impacts des acteurs de la végétalisation sur l’espace public. Ces indicateurs et cette grille permettront de comparer les trottoirs de 4 quartiers de Montréal selon leurs usages, leurs modes de gestion et leurs mobiliers.

Dans le cadre, de mon diplôme d’ingénieur en France, je dois effectuer un stage international pour bénéficier d’une
expérience internationale. J’ai choisi le domaine de la recherche, car c’est une discipline intrigante et stimulante qui
n’est pas assez développée en France. C’est un domaine qui a toujours aiguisé ma curiosité au point où j’ai choisi
d’effectuer un stage de recherche au Canada, pays dans lequel la recherche est un domaine au cœur des
investissements gouvernementaux. Ainsi, ce projet est pour moi un projet à deux facettes, celle de la découverte d’un
domaine très peu développer en France et ainsi très flou dans la tête des étudiants Français, mais aussi celle de
confronter mes connaissances à un domaine de pointe pour les consolider et ainsi les enrichir.
De plus, l’étude de l’isolement des ainés qui est le cœur du projet de recherche de mon stage a toujours été un
domaine qui m’a fortement touché. J’ai d’ailleurs été trésorier pendant deux ans d’une association française dans
laquelle nous allions régulièrement voir nos aînés dans des maisons de retraite pour lutter contre l’isolement social et
les états dépressifs.
C’est ainsi une extrême fierté d’avoir cette opportunité dans un pays comme le Canada.

Career Ready: Using the Customized Employment Process to Break Down Barriers to Employment for People with Development Disabilities

The objective of this project is to determine if the customized employment process can be an effective strategy in addressing the barriers that people with developmental disabilities experience in gaining meaningful employment in a rural community.
This project includes the design, pilot, and evaluation of a customized employment program for adults living with developmental disabilities who are actively supported by a not-for-profit agency. The intended outcome is to develop a customized employment toolkit of best practices that the partner agency can implement, and share with networks, on a continual basis.
This research will work to uncover and address inequalities that people with developmental disabilities experience when it comes to employment and poverty, while also meeting the organizational needs of developmental services agencies that are often underfunded.

Novel data augmentation with image mixing for machine learning-based classification of preclinical positron emission tomography images

We have developed a novel data augmentation procedure that can significantly enhance machine learning-based classification of different brain imaging scans. We will further expand this program to be used to create a novel animal model of brain diseases which will allow researchers to investigate earliest signs of diseases, the progression rates of which may vary across individuals. As a starter, we will look into the animal model of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease, affecting approximately 100,000 Canadians, is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. Over half of patients develop levodopa-induced dyskinesia, a challenging motor side effect. We have recently demonstrated the rats that will develop this side effect shows different pattern of brain activities compared those that do not (i.e., resistant) even on the first day of levodopa treatment. With the proposed machine learning technology, we believe that we can accurately identify these “at-risk” animals, which will give researchers a new window of opportunities to investigate their brains under the microscope and discover novel therapeutic targets. This project will serve as a proof-of-concept for innovative imaging-based classification approaches in animal models, applicable to investigating early disease stages with varying progression rates.

Sustainability & Environmental Management in a Private Sector Seafood Company

Clearwater Seafoods Ltd. Partnership (Clearwater) is a global seafood company concerned with the long-term sustainability of marine resources. A number of Clearwater’s products are MSC certified. This is a voluntary program which involves verifying that the rigorous standards outlined in the federal fisheries regulations are being followed. Annual audits are conducted to ensure they are meeting these standards and the intern will assist in this process. The intern will also look at fuel, electricity and water usage, as well as the waste produced in the facilities to determine areas where Clearwater is being sustainable and other areas that can be improved. Another factor which determines the company’s overall sustainability is how well Clearwater’s interacts with its community. The intern will look at past community involvement across locations to understand how much Clearwater is involved with activities such as charity work and other programs and events so that they might improve their engagement within their communities. Reports will be produced from this research that will then be used by Clearwater’s executives and managers for future planning to maximize sustainability within the company.

Environmental Stewardship Coordinator

Members of the District of Lakeland Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) have been conducting environmental sampling since 2011 on four lakes within the District of Lakeland, Saskatchewan, particularly Emma Lake. The primary goal of the program is to collect consistent water quality data, building a database that could be used for public environmental stewardship education. The need for such a program is in response to ever-increasing concerns from the public regarding water quality degradation, increased weed growth, as well as more frequent algae blooms. Data collected to date on Emma Lake shows a decreasing trend in lake transparency with all indicators pointing to cultural eutrophication (i.e. nutrient pollution) owing to shoreline development, erosion, and sediment inflow, boat traffic, fertilizer use and leaky septic systems. During the past six years the volunteers have worked with several Saskatchewan Polytechnic Natural Resource students to assist with water quality sampling, data collection, and dissemination. This year the EAC, in continuation of its Emma Lake study would like to involve a student, not only to assist the current field sampling program, but also to lead in the design and collection of additional field data related to suspended sediments and macrophyte weed growth while contributing to a public awareness campaign.
