Development of an NDT Dataset Towards Automation of Nuclear Dry Storage Container Lid Weld Inspection

Dry Storage Containers are used by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to store spent nuclear fuel that occurs due to power generation. These containers require inspection to ensure the welded seam sealing the lid to the container base contains no defects. Currently, this time-consuming process limits the production of these containers at a time when energy demand from nuclear is increasing. The primary objective of this proposed project is to facilitate future automation of analyses by acquiring, relating, aligning, and analyzing large datasets from multiple sources (reports, ultrasonic probes, etc.). This work will entail the development of data extraction, management, manipulation, and visualization tools, as well as building a novel dataset with isolated defect indications related to source ultrasonic data as well as weld and inspection metadata.

Enhancing Kinematic Parameter Estimation of Rockets through Sensor Fusion and Networked Measurement Systems

The project determines the limitation boundaries of single sensor measurements by assessing the accuracy of a rocket’s kinematic parameters—such as speed, turn rate, and acceleration—based on the precision of individual sensor measurements. This involves evaluating whether these parameters can be accurately measured or estimated using each available sensor while considering the rocket’s dynamic behavior. Additionally, the project will quantify both the instantaneous and cumulative measurement/estimation errors of these kinematic parameters for subsequent comparison and analysis. Building on this, the project will employ sensor networks to enhance measurement capabilities. After identifying the limitations of each sensor and the associated estimation algorithms, we will develop and implement sensor fusion techniques, potentially incorporating distributed estimation algorithms. The primary objective is to achieve superior measurement and estimation performance over the individual sensors’ algorithms, leveraging the collective capabilities of the sensor network. Furthermore, we will investigate the robustness of the control algorithms to the inherent uncertainties in both single sensors and sensor networks and quantify the impact of estimation errors in the control performance.

Ce projet vise à analyser et à mettre à jour les indicateurs de performance clés actuels d’Alloprof afin de créer un nouveau cadre de performance qui permettra à l’organisation de mieux contrôler le succès continu de ses initiatives. Ce cadre tiendra compte de la position d’Alloprof en tant qu’organisation à but non lucratif et de ses diverses parties prenantes. Les indicateurs clés de performance et le cadre de performance actualisés seront ensuite mis en œuvre au cours du projet afin de déterminer des points de référence pour l’organisation. À la fin du projet, Alloprof disposera de recommandations fondées sur des données pour améliorer ses opérations, ainsi que d’une méthode fondée sur des données pour suivre la progression des efforts de l’organisation vis-à-vis de ses différentes parties prenantes. Par exemple, les nouveaux indicateurs de performance clés pourraient aider à fournir aux étudiants un contenu d’apprentissage plus efficace et plus attrayant, à identifier les points problématiques du site web qui entravent l’expérience de l’utilisateur, et à permettre à l’organisation de mieux allouer les fonds de ses donateurs. Ce nouveau cadre permettra à l’organisation de détecter plus rapidement les écarts par rapport à ses objectifs et d’adapter ses décisions en conséquence.

There is an increased emphasis on the scientific understanding of factors influencing the purchase propensities in (potential) electric vehicle consumers. This project will work to decode the consumer preferences and purchase propensity for electric vehicles in tier-two and tier-three cities in India, and to identify the primary factors influencing these preferences.

Simulation et caractérisation de phototransducteurs a basse température pour application spatiale

La recharge de batterie ou encore l’alimentation continue d’appareils/engins sans fils et éloignés de toute source électrique ou solaire, comme dans le cas d’applications dans le domaine spatial, sont de véritables défis. L’usage couplé d’un émetteur laser et d’un photo-transducteur (PPC) pour transférer de la puissance sur de longues distances est une solution potentielle intéressante. Notre groupe de recherche teste donc ces dispositifs dans des conditions semblables à celles que l’on peut retrouver dans le vide sidéral, c’est-à-dire à basses températures et faible pression ambiante. Ces travaux nous permettent de comprendre l’impact de conditions extrêmes sur les performances des photo-transducteurs minces, nous indiquant par la même occasion si ce type de technologie peut être utilisé dans l’espace.
