Vessel-mounted lidar for navigational depthfinding, underwater bathymetry and environmental assessment: Data Collection and Analysis

Sonar, a widely used technology aboard vessels for tasks such as depth measurement and fish identification, has drawn significant environmental concerns, particularly regarding its impact on marine mammals like whales and dolphins due to its high-frequency sound emissions. In response, Envisioning Labs, an innovative company based in Vancouver, has developed a groundbreaking solution: a quieter bathymeter utilizing lidar technology. This innovative hybrid lidar-sonar device marks a significant advancement in environmental conservation by reducing disturbances to marine life. The primary objective of this pioneering project is to comprehensively assess the potential of the cutting-edge technology known as QUELL (Quiet Underwater Exploration Lidar) across various applications for characterizing the water column. These applications encompass fish detection, identification of floating debris, and underwater bathymetry, all accomplished through the detailed analysis of the complete waveform return of laser pulses captured by the QUELL system. By harnessing the precision and reduced environmental impact of lidar technology, the QUELL system aims to revolutionize underwater exploration while prioritizing the protection of marine ecosystems. Through rigorous testing and evaluation, Envisioning Labs aims to establish QUELL as the leading eco-friendly marine sensing solution, fostering sustainable practices and conservation efforts worldwide.

Quantifying seabird distribution in relation to resources development and associated shipping activities in the Arctic

This MITACS and its proposed support of interns is designed to expand an ongoing collaboration that exists between Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, Environment Canada, aboriginal Wildlife Co-Management Boards, and academic collaborators. Together the group will collectively address several marine wildlife issues using a diversity of innovative research techniques including wildlife tracking devices attached to seabirds, computer simulation modelling, and geo-spatial habitat mapping. This new information will quantify the abundance and distribution patterns of marine birds and identify their use of key habitat areas within the marine study area of interest to Baffinland. This information is necessary to assess how marine birds may respond to resource development activities such as marine shipping as well as assist the company when planning mitigation measures, emergency preparedness procedures, and long-term environmental monitoring plans in the region; all of which are stated priorities of the Nunavut Impact Review Board and legal conditions of the development permit for Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation Mary River Project to proceed.

Management of Powdery Scab of Potato in Alberta

In 2022, the potato industry contributed $2.87B to the Canadian economy and $2.31B to the Alberta economy. Powdery scab has been present in Alberta for decades but because of no above-ground symptoms it has been ignored and no registered products are available to mitigate it. Syngenta suspectsthat the pathogen’s population levels are increasing because of no available treatment. They also need a site with disease which is not possible in Guelph, so they need to have trials in Alberta. The main benefit to the partner organization is that arm’s length research trials are required to expand label uses of fungicide products. In addition, Syngenta has research personnel in Guelph, but not in Alberta and data from Alberta sites are required for product registration. The intern can provide support for the field research while learning about powdery scab in Alberta.

High-speed assessment of bread quality through optimal non-contact methods

Being a bio-process, the quality of yeast-fermented bread is highly dependent on several factors such as temperature, static time, and humidity as well as on the type of flour. As such an active control/feedback strategy is often needed to monitor and optimize the baking process. Many studies have focused on post-baking the assessment of the breads using food’s color and other optical testing to implement a closed feedback control. Other studies have evaluated the height and slope of the bread to infer quality. Quality in food in general, and bread-making in particular is often judged subjectively by humans. As such machine learning methods are increasingly applied to quality inspection of food. There are several versatile machine learning tools such as k-nearest neighbor (KNN), neural networks, support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN).
Silver Hills Bakery is looking to significantly expand and scale up production. The current method of manual inspection and evaluation would not be sufficient for the expected increase in production. To this end, the project will develop an optimal non-contact methodology for estimating bread quality for controlling baking parameters

Efficient Parsing Technique for Console Logs

Software systems produce large amount of logs of different types. Event logs and system traces have been the focus of many research for their information content and often machine friendly format; but another type of logs often overlooked are console logs. Parsing console logs presents two main challenges: their formatting is inconsistent and they contains large amount of noise. We propose to research efficient and practical techniques to tackle these challenges.

An investigation on software quality measurement

The TEC Company has a complete list of vendors and software products. On the other side, the software buyers have their own functional and technical requirements. The TEC’s product list empowers the software buyers to employ the TEC’s software selection methodology in order to find the product which is properly matched with their requirements. The TEC’s methodology considers several functional attributes for each software product. However considering the Quality properties from software engineering point of view will make the outcome of TEC’s methodology more reliable. In this project we try to develop a quality model and then measure the quality factors for a set of software products which are listed in TEC’s products’ list. The outcome of this project are expected to resulted in developing original and significant quality models and measurement methods as well as enriching the TEC’s software selection methodology.

Enhancing Air Traffic Control Communication: Integrating AI and Visual Aids to Improve Pilot Performance and Safety

This project aims to improve communication between pilots and air traffic control (ATC) by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and visual aids with traditional voice communication. By using AI to generate real-time visual cues (like text and icons), we hope to reduce misunderstandings and improve situational awareness for pilots. This will help make flying safer and more efficient. The project will benefit the participating institutions by advancing research in AI and communication technologies, enhancing pilot training programs, and fostering international collaboration.
