Work order Scheduling at maintenance Sites for Commercial Aircraft Fleet

The effective planning of resources when scheduling maintenance tasks and repair jobs is an enormous challenge, especially for heavy industries such as aerospace and transportation manufacturers. In such industries, because of the product complexity and variety, not to mention continuous technological improvements, a broad range of maintenance tasks and high-performance services should be done over the course of a year to guarantee the safety and reliability of the products. The main contribution of the project is to address an important gap in the current theoretical methodologies and market software packages: the lack of an integrated tool to manage the resources in a maintenance site of the commercial aircraft fleets.

Caractérisation sous choc de foudre d’une nouvelle méthode de mise à la terre (MALT) basées sur l’utilisation des géopolymères électriquement conducteurs développés à partir de résidus de production de l’aluminium.

Depuis maintenant plus trois (3) ans, un projet a été initié par Rio Tinto et l’UQAC dans le but de réduire les
résidus issus de la production de l’aluminium sachant que leur entreposage est de plus en plus problématique.
Une des solutions proposées est d’utiliser ces différents résidus pour développer des géopolymères
électriquement conducteurs (GEC). Le présent projet vise donc à développer une application concrète utilisant
une quantité importante de GEC dans le développement d’une nouvelle méthode de mise à la terre (MALT) dédiée
aux équipements des réseaux électriques. La méthode proposée, appelée EE-GEC, est basée sur le principe
d’électrodes (en acier) encastrées (EE) dans un géopolymère électriquement conducteur (GEC). La mise en place
ce nouveau système de MALT va ainsi permettre développer une économie circulaire en permettant de réduire
significativement les résidus de bauxites et en offrant une alternative à l’utilisation du cuivre bientôt considéré
comme un matériau critique.

Designing New Business Models to Transform Bombardier’s Customer Services & Support Department into a Profit Centre

The main purpose of this cluster proposal is to test the hypothesis of whether the Customer Services & Support Department of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft Division can develop new business models to transform itself into a profit center within the Bombardier’s organization. To carry out this test, a thorough investigation of the after-sale needs, wants and concerns of the different users of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft products will be carried out. This investigation covers the whole spectrum of activities taking place within the Customer Services & Support (CS&S) Department, which includes aftermarket service bulletins, supporting customers in modifying their aircrafts’ configuration and operation, competitive intelligence tool development, customer relationship management, technical publications sales and delivery, organizational development for maintenance engineering tasks. This project is beneficial to both the organization and Canada, since it aims at increasing the profitable revenue in Bombardier and contributing to the growth of an important sector in Ontario and Canada – the aerospace sector.

Advancing Dissolvable Fertilizer

Dissolvable Fertilizers are an agricultural innovation with slow and controlled fertilizer release. This technology is posed to reduce application costs and lead to optimized nutrient uptake by plants. Furthermore, it promises to reduce the agricultural, carbon footprint, as the frequency and amount of fertilizer applied is decreased resulting in less environmental pollution from nutrient loss. Excess nitrates and phosphates is leading national governments calling for the reduction in fertilizer use by 20 to 30%. However, the growing global population demands increased food production that is made possible through fertilizers. This project supports the development of dissolvable or glass fertilizer products. Sample compositions and plant growth on canola and/or select cereal crops will be assessed. The results will advance further development and customization of fertilize for improved nutrient ratios and dissolution rates for various crops and climates. The goal of the research outcome is to become commercially available to replace current, competitive fertilizers that do not solve greenhouse gas emissions, that are expensive, that tend to burn seedlings and that perform poorly in colder climates.

Simulation of viscoplastic fluid flows in superhydrophobic channels

The proposed project explores the flow dynamics of Bingham fluids through channels with superhydrophobic (SH) grooved walls. The focus is on understanding how these special surfaces, which trap air in grooves, affect the flow behavior of fluids that exhibit both solid-like and fluid-like properties under different stress levels. The research aims to develop a semi-analytical model alongside direct numerical simulations to investigate various flow regimes, especially how the flow transitions from creeping to inertial. The outcomes of this study could significantly benefit both participating institutions by advancing knowledge in fluid dynamics and potentially influencing the design of microfluidic devices and systems that use non-Newtonian fluids like blood or industrial pastes. This research is not only academically valuable but could also have practical implications in fields like biomedical engineering and materials science.

La production de quatre quarks top dans l’état final multilepton avec le détecteur ATLAS

La physique des particules se concentre sur l’étude des éléments fondamentaux constitutifs de la matière et des forces qui régissent leurs interactions. Les recherches dans ce domaine sont menées à l’aide d’accélérateurs de particules. De plus, le Modèle Standard de la physique des particules est le cadre théorique principal décrivant les interactions entre ces particules élémentaires, incorporant trois des quatre interactions fondamentales de la nature. Cependant, la gravité n’est pas pleinement intégrée dans ce modèle, le laissant encore incomplet.

Le stage proposé se déroulera au CERN en Suisse, dans le cadre de la Collaboration ATLAS au Large Hadron Collider, le plus grand et le plus puissant accélérateur de particules du monde. Le projet se concentre sur la mesure de la production de quatre quarks top dans l’état final multilepton dans des collisions proton-proton à une énergie de centre de masse de 13,6 TeV avec le détecteur ATLAS. Cette mesure rare peut fournir des informations cruciales sur les processus de production de particules et révéler de nouveaux phénomènes au-delà du Modèle Standard. Cette opportunité unique offre à une étudiante motivée la chance de contribuer à une recherche de pointe et d’améliorer notre compréhension des collisions de particules à haute énergie.

Review of Patient Flow Management in Prince Edward Island (PEI)

The proposed research project aims to review the patient flow management structure on Prince Edward Island (PEI) while making recommendations for future directions to implement a 24/7 resilient patient bed-flow
framework. By developing this system the project seeks to optimize resource utilization, while enhancing patient care and outcomes. Through monitoring bed use and assessing trends in bed-flow systems, the project targets to reduce wait time by increasing access to beds for PEI patients. The ultimate goal of the project is therefore to provide timely and effective care to patients through a defined patient bed-flow model which can be implemented in similar health care jurisdictions across Canada. The project will assess the current system and recommend necessary improvements to ensure the right care is provided at the right time, in the right place.

Prediction of pericardial effusion using a 12-lead electrocardiogram analyzed by artificial intelligence

Our project emphasizes the integration of advanced artificial intelligence techniques with traditional diagnostic methods, fostering a synergy that enhances the accuracy and efficiency of cardiac health assessments. By leveraging the power of Artificial intelligence, specifically through the utilization of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), we can discern subtle patterns and nuances in ECG data that may not be readily apparent to human observers. This not only enables us to detect pericardial effusion cases earlier but also enhances our ability to classify them into distinct categories based on severity, such as identifying cases with hemodynamic compromise. Ultimately, this novel approach holds the potential to revolutionize diagnostic capabilities in cardiovascular health, leading to more precise and timely clinical decisions. Through collaboration with participating institutions, our project aims to not only advance medical research but also directly benefit patients by improving the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment in diverse cardiac scenarios.

Étude comparative de la performance des modèles non-gaussien dans l’évaluation des produits dérivés

Le but ce travail est de mettre en place une platforme qui integrerait efficacement plusieurs algorithmes d’evaluation des produits derives sous differents modeles non-gaussiens. Cette platforme cherche a etre une calculatrice des prix des options integrant des modeles de pointe pou servir d’aide a la comparaison empirique des point de depart de l’etude. Cette famille, introduite depuis deja quelques annees, contient des exemples de processus exponentiels Levy qui se demarquent par leur flexibilite comme odele des rendements financiers. Or l’evaluation des produits derives sous ces modeles implique des defis numeriques particuliers. Les prix des options, par exemple, peuvent etre calcules numeriquement par plusieurs approches qui comprennent les methodes d’inversion de transformees de Fourier et/ou des simulations. Un recensement des articles classiques sur le sujet servira de point de depart pour une etude qui devra s’eteindre pour inclure d’autres modeles exponentiels Levy et aux modeles a volatilite stochastique. Le critere de selection restant la tractabilite des modeles.

Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Energy Production in Saskatchewan Province – Phase 1

A multidisciplinary study for the utilization of artificial intelligence for sustainable energy production in Saskatchewan Province is proposed. In this research, the Artificial Intelligence for Energy Team of the University of Regina will use AI technology to various sustainable energy resources, which including to empower the field of nuclear energy by optimizing the reactor design to improve the safety and economy of the reactor, to utilize artificial intelligent methods to optimize the hydrogen production from waste heat in a power plant, to utilize AI methods for efficient geothermal energy production and reservoir management, and finally optimize the production and utilization of wind and solar energy using AI technologies.

Fusion de données RFID et EMG pour la reconnaissance auto-supervisée d’intentions de gestes en temps réel par apprentissage profond

Au cours des dernières années, la recherche en reconnaissance gestuelle a connu une forte effervescence, principalement appuyée sur la démocratisation de l’intelligence artificielle. Cependant, les approches actuelles rencontrent souvent des défis en termes de robustesse et demandent un grand effort de calibration. Pour remédier à ces limitations, ce projet propose d’employer la fusion de signaux d’électromyographie (EMG) et les données d’identification par radiofréquence (RFID) comme fondation pour entraîner des réseaux profonds de reconnaissance de gestes. En intégrant les signaux EMG, qui capturent l’activité musculaire, et les données RFID, qui fournissent un contexte environnemental, le système est en mesure de contextualiser les signaux d’activité musculaire afin de mieux détecter les intentions de gestes de l’utilisateur. Cette fusion améliore non seulement la robustesse des systèmes de reconnaissance gestuelle, mais réduit également le fardeau de calibration manuelle, le rendant ainsi plus convivial et adaptable à différents environnements. En fin de compte, notre approche vise à ouvrir la voie à des interactions homme-machine plus intuitives et efficaces, avec des applications potentielles dans les soins de santé, les jeux et la robotique.

The Plasticene Ocean

Marine plastic pollution is a growing environmental concern that is plaguing coastal communities around the world. Remote locations face unequal waste burdens from the inequitable global flow of plastics and limited waste management infrastructure, causing social and environmental injustices. Small-scale fishers and rural coastal communities directly depend on a healthy marine ecosystem for subsistence and livelihood and are disproportionately impacted by this problem. Although much research has gone into marine plastics within biological contexts, the socio-cultural and economic impacts on humans are under- realized, particularly for overburdened and underserved communities. My ethnographic research will examine this problem through an anthropological lens by conducting fieldwork over the course of two months (May-June 2024) in heavily impacted locations on the Baja Peninsula in and around the region os Santa Rosalia, Mulege, Baja California Sur. I will apply a comparative analysis of the Gulf of California region, representing the domestic fishery and affiliate debris materials, and the Pacific coast which additionally reflects ocean-based materials of-foreign-origins washing ashore or domestic land-based materials washing down rivers…
