Brain cellular regulation of body weight

People with an elevated body mass are at higher risks of cardiometabolic diseases. The prevalence of people living with an elevated body mass has tripled in the last 40 years and this increase shows no sign of slowing down. Interventions targeting caloric restriction fail to lead to sustainable weight loss in the vast majority of cases. A more promising avenue for weight loss exploits the brain satiety mechanisms. For example, all pharmacological therapies effective in weight loss target the brain mechanisms of satiety.
By analyzing the genomes of over 800,000 people of European descent, our project aims to identify genes expressed by cells in the brain that could influence body weight. By doing so, we hope to pinpoint the genes that influence body weight, the brain cells in which they act, as well as the direction of the effect. For example, we could find that a particular gene promotes mass gain when overexpressed in neurons. This type of information is crucial to better understand the mechanisms of chronic weight gain. Alternatively, this project could also help identify molecular targets to help in preventing weight gain and promoting weight maintenance or weight loss.

Valuable Metals Recovery from Fiber Optics Cable

This research will study an efficient method for extracting germanium from waste fiber optics cables. Germanium is widely used in optical fibers, infrared optics, and solar energy industry. Optical fiber is the major application of germanium. Germanium possesses various properties that can make positive impact on these fields. The demand for germanium will increase with the development of 5G networks, and so will the amount of waste fiber optics cables. Germanium is typically refined from zinc concentrates or coal fly ash. However, the amount of germanium in zinc ores or fly ash is so low (less than 3%) that it becomes the main obstacle to efficient recovery and refining processes for germanium. Therefore, it is significant to develop an efficient method for extracting germanium from low concentration conditions. Moreover, we can also utilize the technology to address the anticipated increase in waste fiber optics cables in the future.

Extracellular biomarker discovery to develop a specific therapeutic treatment in cancer

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide with approximately 8 million deaths in 2010. Most cancer treatments lack specificity and affect the whole body, with toxic effects on both cancerous and normal cells. Although new therapies are emerging, targeting cancer cells is a challenge because of the lack of specific markers on cancer cells. Biomark Technologies Inc. has found that the expression levels of the gene coding for the protein SSAT 1 is upregulated in cancer cells. The inhibition of this protein is detrimental for the survival of cancer cells, making it an attractive target for cancer treatment. In this proposal we aim to find novel cancer cell markers in order to develop treatments that will recognize cancer cells and allow internalization of the drug to inhibit the activity of SSAT 1 ultimately causing the death of the cancer.

Cairo’s Public Space Problem: A Historical Overview

“Cairo’s Public Space Problem: A Historical Overview” aims to study the development and de-development of urban sites allowing the free gathering of Egyptians from different classes during the first half of the twentieth century. It explores the different forces at play–local and global, popular and state–in determining the shape of Cairo’s public squares, parks, and other open spaces. This project contributes to our contemporary efforts to grapple with potentially explosive urban problems often exacerbated by climate change by offering a long view onto the question of inhabiting the city. Since Concordia and LSE are urban institutions with a major footprint in their respective cities, the research should be of some significance to these institutions.

Materialism, Minimalism, and Motivation: The Impact on Athletes’ Financial Well-Being

The way people spend their money—their consumer behaviour—can be categorized in terms of materialism or minimalism. More specifically, materialist individuals tend to accumulate material goods, seek new acquisitions often overbuying, and cling to useless objects. In turn, minimalists purchase only essential items, reuse what is still functional, and discard the superfluous. Although materialism is often associated with extrinsic motivation and minimalism is associated with intrinsic, this relationship is more complex. For example, materialists can be linked to intrinsic goals when resource allocation is done in an altruistic manner aiming to help others, and minimalism can be driven to project an image of sustainability to achieve social status and prestige. It is important to better understand how motivation orientations impact consumer behaviours because these concepts impact financial well-being. A better understanding of how these concepts interact can help prevent the negative consequences that may accrue from low financial well-being (e.g., bankruptcy, stress and anxiety, depression). As such, the goal of this study is to explore the influence of motivation orientations on the impact of consumption behaviours on financial well-being.

Pharmaceutical testing capacity of novel intestinal organoid for motility studies

Intestinal ‘organoids’ refer to a miniature intestine that can be grown in a laboratory dish. This organoid can mimic the biology of the real human intestine. We developed a novel organoid which can replicate our intestine to an astounding degree. In this project, we aim to test the capacity of this novel intestinal organoid to assess the efficacy of existing intestinal therapeutic drugs and also test the safety of existing anti-cancer drugs. This will allow us to assess if this novel organoid will be useful in testing drugs in development in the future. Using small but biologically powerful organoid such as this could help us make more effective yet safer drugs, faster.

LR-FHSS-base network size estimation for dts-iot

The project’s goal is to find out if the network size estimator L-OCI, designed for direct-to satellite Internet of Things LoRa based scenarios, can be extended and/or adapted to work based on LR-FHSS. We want to see if they can handle many devices, and whether this combination is good or bad for a specific problem. If it works well, it can help connect more areas and resources. The benefit for the participating institutions is that they will learn how to use L-OCI and LR-FHSS together, which can be very helpful for future research in direct-to satellite Internet of Things.
