Linguistic Analysis Meets Artificial Intelligence: Developing Discourse Parsing Solutions for Dialogue Understanding

In recent years, there has been a noticeable surge in the prevalence of dialogues across various domains. The widespread adoption of dialogues, also facilitated by technologies such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Claude, underscores the considerable significance of comprehending their intricate structures. The analysis of dialogue structures offers invaluable benefits, particularly in sectors like healthcare, where analyzing patient-doctor dialogues can enhance diagnoses and treatments. Similarly, in legal proceedings, parsing courtroom dialogues can boost the justice system’s efficiency. However, the complex organizational structure underlying dialogic interactions poses a challenge for computational modeling. Notably, previous automated tools, primarily designed for monologues, have struggled to adapt to the nuances of dialogues. Handling dialogues requires parsing not only the individual contributions but also the dynamic interplay between speakers, involving shifts in perspectives and topic transitions. This project aims to develop solutions capable of extracting pragmatic and semantic relationships between discourse units within unformatted written or oral dialogues. Natural language processing and machine learning techniques will be employed to analyze lexical, syntactic, and semantic information, thereby identifying discourse segments and classifying the nature of connections between them. The expected outcomes include analytical tools for deeper linguistic examination and improved machine comprehension of idea progression.

Despite the drive to create a more diverse and inclusive science and engineering community in Canada – there is, remarkably, no central platform or easily accessible database that highlights natural sciences, engineering and allied health sciences scientists from different disciplines. In contrast, several other speakers bureau-type platforms enable searching for attributes and expertise. Imogen Coe Consulting, under the leadership of Dr. Imogen Coe, seeks to address this gap in our national fabric of science by developing an easy-to-access platform that houses a database of academics from a variety of disciplines and diverse equity groups to enable and facilitate the recruitment of experts for events, conferences, boards, media, etc. As an acknowledged expert in the field of inclusive excellence in science, Dr. Coe and the partnering academic institution (interns and academic partner Dr. Mustafiz) are well-positioned to help bring an EDI and accessibility lens to the development of a platform dedicated to highlighting diverse Canadian scientists from across Canada and facilitating a higher profile for their expertise.

Food Systems Literacy – A Framework of Competencies for the Canadian Context

As sustainability is increasingly being questioned from an environmental, social and economic standpoint for food systems, and food insecurity rates are persisting globally, there is a need to improve citizen knowledge about food and food systems to transform them. A primary angle to improve knowledge is through education. Farm to Cafeteria Canada is a key stakeholder in Canada that provides and supports food-related education, however there are still many gaps regarding the education of food systems since there is predominantly a focus on nutrition-related food education. Thus the goal for this project will be to make accessible a forthcoming framework for food systems literacy competencies in a report for Farm to Cafeteria Canada and other food-education focused organizations in Canada. More specifically, this project will include taking the findings from a 3-round food systems literacy Delphi study that sought to identify competencies for food systems literacy with experts through ranking and translate this into a detailed report that will be useful for Farm to Cafeteria Canada’s Farm to School programming. This report will also help to inform the development of the Farm to School Institute. Such a document will also be helpful for other non-academic organizations in Canada who wish to consult a framework for food systems literacy education and evaluation.

We are the trusted advisor that bridges the gap between businesses with great ideas and blockchain adoption. In April 2023, Penrose Partners hosted the 4th annual International Tech Summit in sunny Bermuda. The summit featured sponsors and speakers from industry-leading firms and government officials. The associate cohort for Fall 2023 will work together to plan the sponsorship outreach, speakers panels, and logistics for the 5th summit in April 2024. Additionally, the interns will work alongside the Partners to assist in client work for various web3 companies. The tasks for these clients will include industry research, organizational duties, sales efforts, and pitch deck building.

Patient decision aid for musculoskeletal injuries in Mild Hemophilia

Hemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood flow is impaired from clotting. If you have hemophilia, you may bleed for a longer time than others after an injury. The primary goal of our work is to enable patients with the condition to make effective decisions when injuries occur. For instance, our proposed application will aid the patient to seek either immediate attention from a healthcare provider if the injury is a major one. Moreover, if the injury is not severe, then the patient will be guided to perform some activities that will lead to other decisions as to whether the patient is well or needs some self-assessment. This research puts the partner organization in a strategic position to broaden out their campaigns and services to patients with the condition of mild hemophilia

Mortiers à retrait compensé avec des sables de recyclage

Afin de limiter l’impact environnemental de l’industrie de la construction, le recyclage des bétons sous forme de granulats recyclés pour la production de nouveau béton est une pratique de plus en plus courante. Néanmoins, il n’existe pas de marché pour les particules les plus fines, notamment en raison des réglementations strictes en vigueur. L’option proposée ici vise à étudier la possibilité d’utiliser des sables de recyclage dans la composition de mortiers avec agents compensateurs de retrait. Le travail consistera en l’étude de l’influence de ces sables sur l’effet des agents (chaux, magnésie ou C3A) au travers de mesures de retrait (endogène et de séchage) mais aussi :
• Caractérisation physico-mécanique des fines de recyclage ;
• Réalisation de mélanges (mortiers) et évaluation des retraits et des propriétés rhéologiques ;
• Mesures des propriétés mécaniques à échéances.

Providing compassionate care is essential to the delivery of high quality health care and services, and supports positive health outcomes. Providing compassionate care is an important goal for health care organizations, and
to evaluate continuous quality improvement activities we require questionnaires to measure compassionate care. In the long-term care environment, some residents may experience severe cognitive impairment, preventing them from responding to questionnaires about the care they receive. In such situations, relying on care-partners to gather information about the care received is necessary. We identified the need for a questionnaire to measure compassionate care from the perspective of the care-partners. The main aim of this study is to develop such a questionnaire. This questionnaire will be invaluable to engage in future compassion research and to measure the impact of interventions to improve compassionate care.

Système de capteurs embarqués en camion-toupie

Dans le cadre de ce projet collaboratif avec l’industrie dans lequel sont impliqués plusieurs étudiants-chercheurs, le stage consistera en l’exploration de différentes approches d’analyse et de mise en valeur de données par l’apprentissage machine. Les données à exploiter sont obtenues de capteurs embarqués sur des camions-toupies partout en Amérique du Nord. Ces capteurs permettent d’enregistrer l’historique de la température et la maniabilité du béton frais, en plus de suivre la vitesse et le sens de rotation de la toupie. Une base de données très riche est déjà en place. Par exemple, une opportunité d’analyse concerne la prédiction de l’affaissement mesurée à l’arrivée au chantier à partir de données telles que la composition de mélange, la durée et l’intensité de malaxage, la durée du transport et les conditions météo. Le stagiaire sera accompagné dans ce projet par un étudiant au doctorat qui connaît bien les outils et les données en jeu.

Cloud Defence Orchestration

Cloud computing is gaining traction during this last decade through its offering of almost unlimited computer resources accessible from anywhere with minimal management efforts. However, one of its less favorable aspects is security. Currently, the flexibility and elasticity of the cloud are not adequately used to put in place a more efficient defense. This project targets to mitigate a critical security threat to the availability of the cloud, namely distributed denial of service. Therefore, we propose an innovative automated framework that provides an efficient, elastic, and cost-effective defense against such attacks. Ericsson, a world’s leading provider of technology and services, is actively working on pioneering research on cloud computing. One of the most relevant products is the Ericsson Cloud Manager (ECM) for end-to-end cloud orchestration for Ericsson Cloud System. The results of this research can be directly applied and used inside ECM to develop novel mechanisms of defending the cloud.

Teneur en alcalis et détérioration du béton due à la RAS

En 2019, la société des Ponts Jacques Cartier et Champlain Incorporée (PJCCI) a lancé un programme de R&D associé à la déconstruction du Pont Champlain. Réalisé dans ce contexte, le présent projet consistera à déterminer en laboratoire la teneur en alcalis solubles d’échantillons de béton prélevées dans les différentes sections du Pont Champlain fournies à l’équipe de projet (méthode d’extraction à l’eau chaude et à l’eau froide). Ces résultats pourront être comparés à la condition du béton déterminée par d’autres essais afin d’établir dans quelle mesure l’ampleur de l’endommagement et l’expansion résiduelle du béton associable à la RAS peuvent être reliées à la teneur en alcalis du béton, et même à une contribution additionnelle possible par des sels de déglaçages.
