Unintended consequences of elemental sulfur induced soil acidification on bacterial and fungal communities in Okanagan vineyard soil

Elemental Sulphur (So) is a natural crop input commonly used in organic farming. It can be used to fertilize soil, make soils more acidic or control pathogens. These multiple uses make So a unique organic input that can improve growth conditions for crops. The effect of So on soil microbes is largely unknown, despite the wide spread use of So in horticultural systems, particularly viticulture. Studies have shown that fungi are especially sensitive to So. Bacteria live in specific ranges of pH and may be affected by the change in acidity following use of So. It is likely that application of So for a desired use may have unintended consequences on soil microbes. Given the importance of soil microbes for sustainable soil and ecosystem health, it is important to understand how this practice affects soils. Our lab will test the sensitivity of fungi and bacteria collected from vineyard soil to So and pH changes. We will also measure changes to bacterial and fungal communities in the soil following So application. This study will be important for informing local growers on the potential consequences of using So on their crop yield and quality.

Development of mass spectral methods for the detection sulfide modification sites in proteins.

Proteins are large molecules found in all tissues they are composed of amino acids. Proteins perform most of the function in our bodies. Diseases are the result of changes to specific amino acids in proteins that result in alteration or complete loss of protein function. Pharmaceutical interventions in controlling or eliminating diseases depend on the identification the altered amino acid residues. The proposed project is designed to develop new mass spectrometry based methods for the identification of the amino acid residues in proteins that are susceptible to modification/alteration. The techniques being developed will be of interest to biothechnology, pharma and medical device industries both in Canada and in Turkey.

Les déficiences visuelles, dues à des lésions cérébrales, touchent les nouveau-nés et les personnes âgées des pays industrialisés, en raison de l’allongement de la vie. Ce projet de recherche va utiliser la souris pour étudier la récupération des fonctions visuelles après un AVC. Il va explorer les modifications neuronales et de connectivité grâce à des techniques avancées telles que l’imagerie calcique et l’inactivation optogénétique. Cette étude pourrait ouvrir la voie à de nouvelles thérapies pour les troubles visuels cérébraux.

Thermo-hydraulic performance of Lithium Battery in extreme weather conditions

The project is part of ‘InfiniBatt’ which is a smart battery system designed and developed by Motsai. This particular task for intern students aims to investigate the thermal simulation modeling of large range temperature (-40C~50C) controlled battery systems, with an emphasis on optimizing their performance, efficiency, and safety. The study involves the development and implementation of advanced thermal models to accurately predict the thermal behavior of these systems under extreme conditions. The project will simulate and use the finite volume analysis (FVA) tools to create detailed 3D models that account for the complexities of the battery’s geometry, material properties, and thermal management components. These solutions will be crucial for the creation of future connected systems, where effective thermal management is essential to maintaining the reliability and longevity of batteries.

Review of best practices in measuring, monitoring, evaluating and reporting (MER) of climate resilience as relevant to the City of Toronto

Urban areas will be some of the most complex and important sites of resilience planning in the 21st century.
Despite notable efforts, best practices for how local and municipal governments set goals and track progress toward resilience have yet to be established or widely agreed upon. The City of Toronto seeks input into the development of an approach for measuring, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting (MER) of climate resilience. This project will draw on a literature review and input from City staff to address several interrelated questions. What are the needs for a MER framework related to climate resilience for the City of Toronto? What are the decisions that feed into the design of such a framework? What guidance or best practices are available from similar efforts underway in other cities and relevant academic literatures? The deliverables of the project will be a short report and a presentation to City staff.

Analysis of Fluid-Structure Interactions in Constricted Flow

Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease of the cardiovascular system that involves hardening of arteries due to the deposition of plaque [1]. Atherosclerotic lesions in different locations may lead to a variety of diseases such as Coronary Artery Disease, Cerebrovascular Accident and Peripheral Artery Occlusive Disease which should be detected at early stage [2, 3]. To diagnose a stenosis, phonoangiography is a noninvasive
method and should be preferred over invasive approaches [4]. By analyzing the sound spectra of the arterial murmurs, this method is designed to detect the severity of the stenotic occlusion in the peripheral. Sound spectra measured in human subjects with stenosed peripheral arteries will be compared with the wall pressure spectra of a fully developed turbulent constricted flow due to the similarity between the two [5-8]. By studying the pulsatile constricted flow numerically and experimentally, this investigation is expected to provide researchers with improved understanding of constricted pulsatile flow pattern.

With increased scrutiny of early stage investment for biotech start-ups linked to economics downturn from its peak in 2020-2021, targeted investor engagement is key for a successful financing round. Despite possessing highly derisked and innovative technology, data presentation must be refined in a highly digestable manner to attract interest from notable investors and potential strategic partners. Thus, we propose that the implementation of our data generated based on competitive analysis in our investor presentation will strengthen our engagement with investors. Through the identification of early stage investor pipeline for engagement and refining data targeted towards the audience’s level of technical understanding, we believe that the successful completion of this project will help us secure financing towards HDAX Therapeutics’ seed round.

Predicting the Winning Bidding Price of Construction Projects by Ensemble Machine Learning

Louis W. Bray Construction Limited (LWB) is a mid-sized heavy civil contractor with focused efforts in Eastern Ontario. One of its largest challenges is competing with larger competitors and maintaining competitive pricing to all its clients, including all levels of government. Its biggest risk is the procurement process, including tendering and bidding. This project aims to help LWB create a robust winning bidding price prediction model based on their historical data of tenders and cost analysis forms. This project gives LWB further insight into proper bidding approaches and allows it to compete on a larger scale. LWB will be able to use this data to question its pricing model, limit errors, and maximize profitability. Furthermore, if the bid is well understood and there is enough information, there becomes less of a need to price in the risk of errors. This leads to higher competitiveness and better pricing for all clients.
