Production of New Balsam Fir Lines Using Somatic Embryogenesis

Christmas tree growers in Nova Scotia are experiencing high demand for trees along with increasing pressure to adapt to changing climate conditions. The Christmas Tree Council of Nova Scotia (CTCNS) is the parent organization of three regional Christmas tree associations representing over 300 Christmas tree growers who grow primarily Balsam fir. These growers need trees well-suited to Nova Scotia climates with preferred traits like enhanced needle retention and later flushing dates. Both testing and production of these trees requires cloning new tree lines and somatic embryogenesis is the most promising method for doing so. However, current protocols for clonal propagation of Balsam fir using somatic embryogenesis are inefficient, and few viable lines of trees have been produced. Working with the CTCNS, this project will optimize the production of locally-adapted Balsam fir and result in at least 70 new lines for testing. These improved clonal propagation methods and access to a wider selection of trees will allow Nova Scotia Christmas tree growers to meet consumer demand and respond quickly to changing climate conditions.

Modernization and Streamlining of Internal Infrastructure and Processes

A software development project to modernize the internal infrastructure of the company across 3 different streams of work: build infrastructure, release pipelines and content management solutions. The company will benefit from this work by streamlining internal processes that are both error prone and manual in their nature, through the adoption and development of modern technologies and solutions. By removing the manual nature of these processes, we aim to reduce problems, miscommunications, and stresses – and to reduce our time to react and identify problems in the releases of our software and their content updates.

Strategic Planning and Benchmarking in Minor Hockey

The Guelph Minor Hockey Association (GMHA) is a not-for-profit community sport organization (CSO) that has serviced the City of Guelph with youth hockey programming since 1948. Currently, 1,500 youth are enrolled in GMHA programming. Although hockey is known as Canada’s sport, the landscape has been changing. Many of the country’s largest minor hockey associations have reported regular declines in participation over recent years with the most significant losses coming from age groups between 14 and 18 years old. The decline in youth hockey participation has been linked to the sport’s extensive participation costs which has led to an overall lack of diversity and equity deserving stakeholders not feeling welcomed. While the GMHA has been able to maintain consistent registration levels, the call remains for Canadian sport organization to become more athlete-centred in their governance by showcasing their commitment to innovating programming and ensuring that all opportunities are safe from maltreatment. Thus, the goal of this internship is to support GMHA’s strategic planning process.

Fort McKay Photo Archive Project

The Fort McKay Métis Nation (FMMN) is the self-governing Métis Nation representing the interests of Métis people in the community. Members of FMMN are concerned about the cumulative impacts of industrial development on the land, air, water and wildlife in the Fort McKay area. As active users of the land, community members have intimate knowledge of the local ecosystems, rivers, water-bodies and wildlife populations and are eager to contribute this knowledge to address and prevent environmental impacts. Furthermore, the pace of industrialization has altered the local landscape and ecosystem upon which the practice of harvesting rights depends. FMMN members are eager to document their knowledge and traditional use of land within specific project sites in order to protect the community’s heritage, cultural and historic resources, and Aboriginal rights.

One of the ways that the Nation citizens can document their long history in the region is through community artifacts including historic photos, documents, videos, beadwork and other family heirlooms. The goal of the project will be to document the existence of the community collections and, where possible and relevant, collect stories related to those items.

Imitating Artist’s Brushstroke Style by Machine Learning Methods

Acrylic Robotics is a robotics startup based in Montreal, on a mission to use technology to make fine art accessible to the general public. To make fine art accessible, this project focuses on the implementation of a larger robotic arm to recreate artists’ artworks at scale. The intern will be responsible for the development of painting functionality for a new robotic arm, refinement of the robotic painting output, and pilot testing of the robotic system with both internal and external clients. To increase the quality of the paintings, brush strokes should be similar to humans. For this reason, we want to integrate the original artists’ style by collecting brushstrokes (hand brush motion) samples and training a generative model. In other words, after collecting data from artists, a stylized brushstroke generator model will be trained to improve the quality of the paintings. The intern will use their expertise to implement complex control algorithms to recreate the delicate movements of a painter with large robotic arms. The intern will work with both clientele and company personnel to ensure that all desired needs of the client are understood and further translate these needs into control functionalities within the robotic capabilities.
