Optimisation et validation d’un procédé de nettoyage pour les consommables de laboratoire en plastique

Les plastiques à usage unique ont largement remplacé des matériaux plus durables dans les laboratoires de biotechnologie. Mondialement, il a été estimé en 2014 que la recherche génère 5.5 millions de tonnes de plastiques annuellement, soit plus de plastique que l’entièreté du Canada (tous secteurs confondus). Or, plusieurs sources indiquent que beaucoup de ces plastiques pourraient en réalité être utilisés plusieurs fois, s’ils sont correctement nettoyés et décontaminés. Le présent projet de recherche a pour objectifs 1) de déterminer quels consommables en plastiques pourraient être réutilisés, et dans quels contextes, 2) de développer une batterie de tests pour déterminer la qualité du nettoyage et des plastiques reconditionnés, 3) d’optimiser un procédé de nettoyage et de décontamination, et 4) de valider ce procédé auprès de plusieurs laboratoires. Phoenix Impact utilisera directement les découvertes effectuées pour breveter un procédé de nettoyage et estimer le potentiel commercial du reconditionnement des consommables.

Airflow Analysis and Optimization of Refuge OneUnit

Rimer Alco North America Inc. (RANA) manufactures Mine Refuge Systems for the global mining industry. The goal of this partnership project between The University of Manitoba and RANA is to undertake a comprehensive research that will help us to understand air flow pattern within the Refuge Systems and will lead to optimal manufacturing processes. The outcomes of this research is expected to enable RANA to design new Refuge Systems that are efficient to manufacture, meet new industry
requirements, and incorporate new product features deemed important to RANA’s customers. These outcomes will enable RANA to increase their Canadian and worldwide sales, expand their manufacturing operations and create jobs in Canada. The project will also provide a unique opportunity for graduate students who will work on this project to interact with professional engineers
from RANA and attain real world experience and engineering contribution to a lifesaving product for the mining industry.

Blue Roof Performance and Scalability as a Tool of Green Infrastructure

This project seeks to address new stormwater management and flood control measures by proposing a smart blue roof at Credit Valley Conservation’s (CVC) main office building. The blue roof system will temporarily capture rainwater using the roof as a storage reservoir and then allow the water to evaporate and/or to be used for non-potable requirements on site (i.e., irrigation, toilet flushing, truck washing) and ultimately offset potable water demands and reduce stormwater runoff. The research will assess the public health, building science, and civil engineering aspects of operating and maintaining a smart blue roof on the building. CVC, as well as other municipalities across Canada can benefit from this research by utilizing the findings for larger scale implementation of smart blue roofs, such as in commercial level buildings and urban areas.

Mid-fidelity aero-structural framework for Power-Control Unit modeling

The research project examines fast aerodynamic numerical models for use in the aircraft analysis and design
phase. Such models must be rapid by their very formulation whilst also removing needs for complex preprocessing
steps such as mesh generation. The chosen approach is known in the literature, using a coupling algorithm
between 2D high-fidelity and 3D low-fidelity models. The high-fidelity formulation incorporates the viscous and
transonic effects on 2D airfoils while the low-fidelity model incorporates the full 3D wing effects. This project aims
at adding a powered control unit between the airfoil and an actuated element (i.e. aileron). The algorithms will be
developed at Polytechnique Montreal and the industrial premise. The M.Sc. student will examine the performance
of the academic software on industrial cases at Bombardier and propose ideas towards a possible follow-on wind
tunnel test program.
The partner organizations will benefit from the expertise of Prof. Laurendeau’s laboratory that cumulates 12 years
of experience in the development of such methods.

Venezuela’s Role as External Sponsor of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP)

This project will analyze how external support shapes insurgent group cohesion. It focuses on Venezuelan sponsorship of the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces-People’s Army (FARC-EP), which seems to have both improved and undermined FARC-EP cohesion at different points in the conflict. This case provides a key anomaly to existing approaches, and an in-depth study promises new insights into the complex international politics of civil wars. We propose to study why Venezuelan sponsorship contributed to cohesion and mistrust at different times. Examining the relationship between Venezuela and the FARC-EP contributes to our current understanding of the role of external sponsors. We contribute to the existing literature on the organization turn in civil wars, state sponsors and international dynamics of cohesion and fragmentation.

Mechanical design and improvement of modular Stable Vertical Lift Platform (SVLP)

Portable lifting systems and platforms are used extensively in music and movie industries for elevating both equipment and personal. An ideal system for these industries is a portable stable platform that can be transported to the desired site and reconfigured (or moved) to the necessary height with ease. The market currently lacks such highly portable stable lifting system. A modular stable vertical lift platform (SVLP) has been conceptualized in order to overcome the mentioned issues in current lifting systems. The modular SVLP has tremendous market potential in both the entertainment and movie industries. Indeed the final clients in the entertainment industries are eager about the design idea. SFP currently lacks the expertise and dedicated manpower resources to independently develop the modular SVLP system and needs the assistance of an intern through the Mitacs Accelerate program in order to successfully design and analyze their system.

Systèmes microfluidiques sans perfusion fabriquables en masse pour l’oncologie 3D – phase 2 : thermoplastiques

L’amélioration de la vie des patients atteints de cancer passe par une meilleure thérapie et un suivi clinique personnalisé. Pour atteindre cet objectif, notre groupe a co-développé un nouveau modèle de cancer en 3D à partir d’explants de tissus miniatures d’animaux ou d’humains appelés “tissus micro-miniature qui préserve la viabilité des tissus grâce à un matériau hautement perméable à l’oxygène, le PDMS Sylgard 184, omniprésent dans la communauté des microdispositifs biomédicaux. Cependant, le Sylgard 184 est cher et difficile à fabriquer. Dans ce projet, qui constitue la 2e année du même projet TransMedTech, pour lequel le montage financier hors-MITACS est déjà approuvé par toutes les instances, nous chercherons à développer des dispositifs thermoplastiques moulables par injection en assurant l’apport en oxygène à nos tissus par des membranes fonctionnelles plutôt que par des matériaux poreux comme le PDMS. Nous allons ainsi développer une technologie brevetée au sein de notre groupe et jeter les bases d’une nouvelle génération de dispositifs de cultures de tumeurs 100% thermoplastiques. Ce projet formera un étudiant à la fine pointe de la recherche en dispositifs biomédicaux pour l’oncologie et sera co-financé par deux compagnies 100% québécoises : DBM Reflex et MISO Chip.
