Linguistic Cues for Heuristic Determination of Patterns of Speech in Noise

This project aims to investigate the benefits of using linguistic cues for extracting speech-ofinterest from competing background noise. Given an algorithm which detects formants of a speaker of interest within an audio signal which includes background noise, and given that the limits of such an approach are reached when formants of the speaker of interest become substantially lost within the noise, are there linguistic cues within some formants, or linguistic relationships between some successive speech sounds, which can be used to infer with confidence which speech sounds from the speaker of interest are present beneath the noise floor of a noisy audio signal. The partner organization will benefit from this internship by extending the range of solutions it can offer to the market. If the proposed solution proves to be useful and novel, the partner organization will apply for patent protection. This could lead to increased sales and the additional employment within the company.

Effects of invasive plant management on urban plant-pollinator interactions

To restore a damaged ecosystem, one of the first steps is to remove alien invasive plants. These plants come
from elsewhere in the world and can deeply alter the native plant community in their new environments. These
changes can in turn affect insect pollinators, like bees, who depend on plants for food. In naturalized or agricultural
environments, removing invasive plants can increase the biodiversity and quantity of pollinators living in restored
ecosystems. But in cities, where ecosystems are completely different from those that exist in nature, non-native
plants may be providing pollinators with important food resources. Our project will examine the effects of removing
the invasive Canada thistle Cirsium arvense on urban pollinators at The Meadoway, an ecosystem restoration
project managed by the TRCA in Scarborough, ON. With this information, restoration practitioners will be able to
design a thistle management plan that minimizes the harm caused by this invasive plant while maximizing potential
benefits to The Meadoway’s pollinators.

Amino Acid Electronic Structures and Interactions

Quantum chemistry techniques can only be used in small-scale systems and the structure of biomolecules like proteins cannot be effectively examined by them. So, it is essential to develop a workable solution that could be applied to larger systems. Finding such a solution will then enable us to investigate the structure of larger molecules like proteins.
Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is a relatively fast and efficient method. It can handle larger systems with a high degree of accuracy and allows for the investigation of the electronic properties of a system.
In my thesis project, we are interested to investigate the electronic structure of amino acids as the building block of proteins by utilizing DMRG methods. The findings of this study can be extended to larger systems, like proteins, and consequently may have applications in drug design and development.

Optical interconnects and intermediate measurements in atomic quantum computers.

A modular quantum computer is a system that utilizes the principles of quantum mechanics to store and process information. Although quantum computers have the potential to offer significantly greater computational power than classical computers, their development is complicated by a lack of scalabil-ity. To address this issue, small quantum processors or modules are employed, which can be intercon-nected using photonic methods. The photonic interconnects provide a way to create quantum correla-tions between the modules, enabling complex calculations to be performed. This allows the algorithm of a given computation to be distributed over different modules, thus implementing them in parallel. However, the task of connecting different modules remains a challenge, and the objective of this pro-ject is to develop a model that can forecast and reduce errors arising from these connections. In addi-tion, this project will examine ways to implement error correction methods that are critical for achiev-ing fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Application of MBD for international research and collaboration

Canada, Mexico, and United States are members of a free trade agreement (USMCA), which seek to build stronger local supply chains and stimulate financing in strategic industries, such as lithium batteries, semiconductor chips, and green energy sources.
Because, due to the pandemic situation and the reduction of chips production, companies, and government from USMCA are looking for an immediate nearshoring, and reshoring of their current supply chains, and new ones related to electromobility (e-mobility). e-mobility is an across concept, which includes sustainable green transportation, driver-less vehicles, renewable sources, smart grids, internet of things, cyber security, among others. Currently e-mobility is a worldwide major player at government, economy, industry, and society levels, and it will change the world as we know it today. Therefore, this project will help to train the best talented people, which will lead the nearshoring, reshoring, and supply chains of the different e-mobility’s areas.

The Ways of Absorption and Interpretations of Prajna and Nagarjuna’s Philosophy in Tian Tai Buddhism

Prajna and Nagarjuna’s Philosophy, whose main character is to dispel, eliminate, and integrate, has gained a new meaning structure after Tiantai Zhiyi’s interpretation. Judging from the appearance of the teachings, Prajna brings together the general teaching and other teachings, while the right teaching is the perfect teaching. In terms of insight wisdom, the wisdom of “equality and one taste” is about the realm of all living beings and has the distinction of insight wisdom. Under the perspective of the Reality Theory of the Perfect Teaching, the Three Views and the Three Wisdoms, as the expansion dimensions of Prajna, are just one mind, equal and unobstructed, all of which are appropriate and complete, and encompass the Three Truths, the Three Paths, and the Three Buddhas. Waiting for the truth of the middle way of all dharmas. At the same time, as one of the sources of Zhiyi’s “Three Truths” thoughts, the “Three Truths” also has multiple meaning structures under Zhiyi’s judgment system, and has the character of covering all dharmas as a whole.

This project will conduct a systematic study on Master Taixu’s thoughts on layman education. Master Taixu was a pioneer in the reform of modern Buddhism and had a profound impact on the development of modern Buddhism. As the vast majority of Buddhist belief groups, lay Buddhists are the main participants in family and social activities, and they are the practical carriers for the development of Humanistic Buddhism.This project will comprehensively sort out Master Taixu’s views on the relationship between monks and laymen, clarify Master Taixu’s views on the order and content of layman’s practice, and propose enlightenment and reflection on modern layman education and the development of Humanistic Buddhism.

Etuaptmumk, a Two-Eyed Seeing approach to Live-Projects – Prototyping Deployable, Culturally Identifiable Spaces for Indigenous Youth Athletes

The NAIG 2023 is trialling Brave Spaces for young athletes — outdoor rooms providing for
moments of pause or rest during the event programming. The idea for this particular program
came from NAIG and relates to the observed experiences of youth athletes during previous
games. Reflection on this trial will be useful for the NAIG 2023 to review and share with future
hosts of the NAIG. This trial is also an opportunity to improve upon an architectural pedagogical practice called
“live projects,” in which course instruction takes place within a real-world scenario, with a client,
a budget and agreed deliverables. Our proposed collaboration with indigenous community
members is atypical because the exchange occurs within the context of designing and building
collaboratively. This approach supports co-authorships and distinguishes itself from typical roles
of designer /client or traditional knowledge holders as cultural guide exclusively.

Optogenetic feedback control to control gene expression using image processing techniques

Biomanufacturing is essential to growing Canada’s economy – as it provides a means to produce valuable and essential drugs, therapeutics, vaccines, and chemicals such that they are affordable and available for the Canadians who need them. In these facilities, biomanufacturing using yeast cells are becoming an attractive method for producing the valuable products because they can be rapidly produced and can result in larger quantities. In our Project, we will develop a miniaturized system that will search for genes that will tune the metabolic pathway toward efficient and large production of drugs of interest. Our complete system will use light to control these genes, and find which genes are critical to produce large quantities of a drug. When successful, we will have a new method for biomanufacturing optimization that can be applied to numerous drug production as well as new software workflow that can be integrated with Object Research Systems’ line of software products.

Regional Cycle Route Network Benchmarking – The State of Cycling in Metro Vancouver 2023

HUB Cycling is looking to perform a benchmark analysis of the cycle route network in the Metro Vancouver area. The project will build on the benchmark analysis HUB Cycling performed in 2019 which assessed the quality and comfortability of each segment of the Metro Vancouver cycle route network. This project will benefit from the inclusion of new data sets courtesy of academic partnerships and collaborations with organizations in the community. To complete the project, the intern will work closely with HUB Cycling staff and academics to use the data sets to quantify the quality of each section of the cycle route network. The subsequent publication will be used to inform stakeholders how to use and improve the cycle route network. The work of the intern employed for the project will be invaluable for HUB Cycling as he will play a large role in data analysis and creating the final report to be published.

Evaluating Women’s Shelters Canada Second Stage Transitional Housing New Build Project

Women’s Shelters Canada (WSC; https://endvaw.ca/) is a network of 14 provincial and territorial shelter associations representing over 450 shelters across Canada. A new service offered by WSC is the Second Stage Transitional Housing (SSTH) New Build Project (https://endvaw.ca/second-stage-project-2-2/). SSTH offers technical assistance, resources and support in three areas for member organizations looking to develop second stage transitional housing: (1) grant applications for pre-development activities; (2) grant applications for capital costs; and (3) project management services. WSC has partnered with researchers from the Centre for Research on Educational and Community Services (CRECS) at the University of Ottawa, to undertake an evaluation of this program. The evaluation will describe how the program was designed and intended to function), how it is has actually operated, why various members have used these services or not, what are the perceptions of the providers of services, what are the lessons that have been learned to date, and what are the recommendations for improving the program.
