Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose, which leads to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves over time. It is estimated that around 10% of Canadians have diabetes, which is 1 of the 10 leading causes of death globally. While diabetes is highly prevalent, it is also seriously undiagnosed and mismanaged since only 50% of people with diabetes are aware that they have the condition.
Diabetes can be diagnosed using serum glucose measurement, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting glucose, and/or oral glucose tolerance testing, which are invasive protocols that require blood drawing and are mostly limited to point-of-care clinical visits. Moreover, to date there is no way of assessing daily or weekly progression of the condition and efficacy of the assigned treatment. In recent years, wearable devices have gained great interest in the medical industry and academic community due to their ability to collect data in order to create algorithms that may be used to predict health outcomes and facilitate the detection and monitoring of chronic diseases such as diabetes.
