Development of a standardized nutrient and taste screen by which to support farm crop andcultivar selection

The Lufa Farms urban greenhouse project, by producing truly local fresh produce, changes the emphasis on

crop selection criteria. Storage, shelf-life, and shipping factors now have lesser importance in choosing a

particular variety of produce. Therefore, selection can now once again be based on market-oriented criteria –

notably nutritional value and taste. In addition, because food production can be localized to small areas such

as specific neighborhoods, crop selection can also be area specific. The problem, however, is that there are

no well-established, user-friendly criteria or approach for screening and selecting produce crops by taste and

nutrient levels. This project will create, evaluate and demonstrate a new screening method by which to

choose highly nutritious and tasty fresh produce varieties.
