Optimizing the reliability of the City of Saskatoon’s water supply network

The City of Saskatoon operates an underground water distribution network serving 257,000 residents. The focus of this research project is the reliability of the primary water supply network, especially the large diameter “trunks.” The City seeks to conduct a risk assessment and identify critical components. If critical spares are stored in-house, a warehousing strategy will be investigated. This will allow the City to avoid lengthy ordering lead times like those experienced during the summer of 2021, when three overlapping watermain breaks caused low pressure in the southeast area.
