Assistive Device Innovation Project

The project will support technology innovation for an assistive device to treat plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinopthy more quickly and easily. Affecting more than 15% of the general population, these indications have significant affect on health and wellbeing including occupational, physical and mental health. Recovery is lengthy, re-occurance is common and treatment is not standarized. Through development, there is an opportunity to advance assistive device innovation to improve treatment outcomes and ultimately improve the health and well being of Canadians.

Clarivent Bubble Helmet Verification

Many methods for providing respiratory support to patients are currently in use, however more commonly available techniques such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) are not appropriate for ventilation of patients with airborne infectious diseases due to the risk of aerosolization endangering other patients and hospital staff. Clarivent has develop a sealed device to provide non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) to patients and allow for the provision of respiratory therapy with widely available methods such as CPAP, while minimizing the risk of infection for other patients and staff. This project will focus on verification and validation of this device.

Penrose Partners is a blockchain startup firm that provides transactional, educational, and corporate consulting/material production services to businesses, institutional investors, and disruptive tech companies in the blockchain space. We are the trusted advisor that bridges the gap between businesses with great ideas and blockchain adoption. In April 2023, Penrose Partners hosted the 4th annual International Tech Summit in sunny Bermuda. The summit featured sponsors and speakers from industry-leading firms and government officials. The associate cohort for Summer 2023 will work together to plan the sponsorship outreach, speakers panels, and logistics for the 5th summit in April 2024. Additionally, the interns will work alongside the Partners to assist in client work for various web3 companies. The tasks for these clients will include industry research, organizational duties, sales efforts, and pitch deck building.

Everly Essentials- Retail Expansion

Everly is on a mission to transform our everyday self-care essentials so that they not only care for us but for the planet too. Roughly 50 million tons of waste is produced a year and most of it is shipped to / dumped in poor countries in Asia and Africa. Beauty and self-care product packaging contribute massively to this issue. We know there’s a better way to produce these products, which is why we started Everly. The first product we are tackling is candles. We’ve reimagined how we consume candles and developed a proprietary way to reduce waste around candle consumption. Another problem with candles is that most candles in the market are made with paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum that is not only toxic for humans but terrible for the environment. Additionally, typical candles use toxic fragrances (the fragrance industry is sadly unregulated by the FDA). All of Everly’s products are clean, meaning they are free of toxic ingredients & sustainable (compostable packaging). In 2022, we finally launched our brand online through our website (tryeverly.com), and in 2023, we’re looking forward to expand our footprint in select retailers.

Sean Grindal – Applying emerging AI technology to Enhance Learning in the Classroom

The intern will be participating in research to evaluate ways to apply emerging AI technology and AI products to the Canadian education sector. Education topics of focus include but are not limited to, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. The intern will evaluate the current AI landscape to discern the capabilities of the technology to be applied to the teaching of these subjects. Through collaboration with the partner organization (Cansbridge Fellowship) and the academic supervisor Prof. Francois Pitt, the intern will utilize their computer-science experience and previous work as a software developer to discern the difficulty of developing new AI applications using existing AI models to solve teaching problems that existing products aren’t yet suited for. The partner organization will provide direct mentorship through its alumni network spanning leadership in iconic innovation-leading organizations such as Google, Facebook, and dozens of startups. Helping to innovate Canada’s education system directly aligns with the Cansbridge Fellowship’s mission to help the next generation of innovative Canadian students.

1000s of Ontarians engage with their local government every year through Advisory Committees of Council (ACOCs). The committees address a wide range of topics, including accessibility, transit, heritage, and the arts. Residents often serve on these committees for a more than a year. The goal of this research is to develop a framework to support the City of Guelph increase the effectiveness of its ACOCs. The research will also be useful for other municipalities in Ontario. The research will involve City staff, Members of Council, ACOC committee members and other residents in Guelph.

Intelligent Query and Learning System for Logistics

This research project aims to create an Intelligent Query and Learning System (IQLS) that can integrate knowledge from multiple sources such as documents, web pages, voices, input texts, images, and videos. The IQLS will use learning and reasoning techniques to update the knowledge structures dynamically and allow multiple users to integrate their knowledge packages and train the system with different views to answer questions. The proposed system will provide a platform for users to create and integrate their own knowledge, which will be useful in supporting logistics knowledge management for logistic chains and services. The expected outcome of this project is to develop a novel adaptive knowledge structure with dynamic update based on multiple sources that can provide an efficient way to manage and query diverse data holdings collected in the Canadian Logistics Data Vault regarding logistics and transportation networks. This will be useful in emergency procedures and data retrieval for transportation networks, including accidents, extreme weather events, and CBRN defense.

Regression Model Development for Parametric Analysis of Graphene Based Hydrogen Storage

In Canada, the transportation sector accounts for 25% of all emissions. Hydrogen fueled vehicles is one option that has a great potential to reduce Canadian and global CO2 fuel emissions. This research project investigates production parameters that influence hydrogen storage capacity in storage materials in order to optimize the production process and increase the hydrogen gas storage capacity of current materials. Hydrogen fuel and its associated solid state fuel production will help ensure a made in Canada clean energy transition for decarbonization in the transportation sector, combatting climate change and ensuring a green future for the planet.

Development of smart battery energy/thermal management systems for health-conscious DC fast charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power flow

Intelligent health-conscious battery management system (BMS) and advanced battery thermal management systems (BTMS) are essential to improve performance of energy utilization, safety, and cycle-life. Improvement in the energetic performance on all these levels encourages integration and development within the full thermal installation. This project will look at Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML)-based intelligent state estimators for health-conscious BMS/BTMS and also develop advanced thermal management systems. Based on prior work, advanced BMS and BTMS will be developed, so as to to deploy these strategies on a larger scale, to enhance cycle life and capacity for decentralized energy storage services in a smart grid scenario, including health-conscious vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power flow as well as health-conscious DC fast charging (DCFC). This project will develop an intelligent healthy module/battery selection and optimization algorithm to leverage V2G operation without impacting user experience and battery health.

Hybrid quantum safe certificates for heterogeneous contexts of use

In the context of the rapidly changing digitization of our society and the emergence of quantum computing, securing digital communications is of paramount importance. Among the challenges is the improvement of digital certificates, which are essential for the integrity and non-repudiation of electronic transactions. Thus, a balance must be struck between improved performance, backward compatibility and resistance to side-channel attacks. This research will focus on identifying the optimal combination of cryptographic schemes for post-quantum secure hybrid certificates. The objectives of this work are to strengthen digital certificates against quantum threats, promote their interoperability among various systems, and develop agile and backward-compatible certificates that ensure seamless authentication in heterogeneous networks, thus paving the way for a smooth transition to future cryptographic technologies.

La Digital Markets Act (DMA) et la régulation du numérique en Europe : l’UE, de puissance réglementaire à puissance industrielle?

Mon projet de recherche vise à comprendre et décortiquer la stratégie de «souveraineté numérique» mise de l’avant par l’UE au cours des dernières années, et ce, sous le prisme de sa politique industrielle. Alors que les États-Unis ont récemment signé le Chips and Science Act, qui apporte à l’industrie américaine 280 milliards de subventions, et que la Chine a développé dans la dernière décennie une véritable industrie compétitive de la tech (Picart 2023 ; He 2022), l’UE, qui a longtemps privilégié la concurrence, commence à s’engager dans cette lutte industrielle mondiale avec des législations comme le Digital Markets Act (DMA), mais aussi le Chips Act, promulgué en 2022, et autorisant aux États membres de recourir à des subventions pour la fabrication de semi-conducteurs sur le territoire national (Poitiers et Weil 2023). En plus de déterminer si l’UE souhaite atteindre sa «souveraineté numérique» par le renforcement de son pouvoir industriel, je désire savoir si l’adoption du DMA, première grande législation destinée à encadrer les géants du numérique, marque un virage dans l’approche préconisée par l’UE pour lutter contre les géants du numérique (favoriser la concurrence vs. développer des géants européennes)

Efficient Avatar Facial Control for Social Presence in Mixed Reality Remote Collaboration

The objective of the research project is to develop a comprehensive framework for avatar-mediated communication in AR/VR environments, with a focus on avatar facial expressions. The framework is intended to enhance the efficiency of communication in Mixed Reality (MR) remote collaboration situations, which can be variously applied to education, industry, and medicine, by providing a more immersive and information-rich experience. The outcomes of this project could potentially have far-reaching social impacts by improving communication and collaboration in a variety of contexts.
The current research topic aims to develop a comprehensive framework for avatar-mediated communication in AR/VR that is not limited to a specific country or culture. Therefore, this international exchange program aims to demonstrate that the proposed framework is applicable to a broad range of cultures by including participants from diverse cultural backgrounds.
